Don’t Panic Chiefs Fans, I See an Upgrade

After the Breaston signing people in KC were rejoicing about having an offense that is going to score a lot of points. Now today, after the release of an aging veteran, a lot of people think all hope has been lost. As good of a person Brian Waters is off the field, it was a smart move and think you will see that it was step one in signing a couple more impact players. As I wrote earlier I expected Waters to lose his job on performance to Jon Asamoah and with reports that it was a mutual release, indicate to me that Waters knew the same.

Brian will be missed in the community, but I believe we will see an upgrade at his left guard position. Asamoah is ready to break out in this league and become an elite guard. He is bigger, stronger and much younger than the veteran. If all the Chiefs brass didn’t believe that we wouldn’t be talking about this issue right now. The only way Asamoah isn’t the Chiefs starting guard is if they signed Justin Blalock, Harvey Dahl, who both will probably end up back in Atlanta, or Deuce Lutui. I mention these free agents, because I see those as the only upgrades over Asamoah for this season.

I don’t see the Chiefs signing a guard though, because of Rodney Hudson’s versatility. If we see another free agent pick up I believe it will be somebody to compete with Barry Richardson at right tackle. There are still some big names out there at this position with Alex Barron, Willie Colon, Jamaal Brown and Jared Gaither.

There was another departure from the Chiefs defensive line this morning with Shaun Smith heading to the Titans. He joins Ron Edwards in leaving Kansas City and leaving defensive line depth a glaring weakness and issue that most certainly will be addressed shortly. Everyone seems to be speculating that Aubrayo Franklin is coming to KC, but I think we may need a little more depth especially with Smith departing. Some guys I’m keeping my eye on are Cullen Jenkins, Marcus Spears and recently released first round pick Jamaal Anderson.

So though the Chiefs have only signed one impact player, while losing a few, don’t expect them to be as quiet as they have been today and tomorrow. I would like to see a linebacker or two, especially with the likes of Leroy Hill, Manny Lawson, Barrett Ruud, Ernie Sims and my favorite of that group Nick Barnett being available.

Also still keeping my fingers crossed on Le’Ron McClain. That one may not happen, but would love to see him clearing the way for Charles and pounding the rock on the goal line.

Lastly, with the release of players and departure of a couple free agents, we should be able to start locking some guys up. My wish list for 4 -5 year deals include, locking up Flowers, Carr, Hali and Bowe. So we will see what these next few days will do to the Chiefs roster.
