The Oakland Raiders still trying to free up cap space have released cornerback Chris Johnson, and safety Hiram Eugene.
Now while I agree with the release of Hiram Eugene as he has mainly been a special teams player, The relase of Chris Johnson does come as some sort of a shock to me. Unless we are talking about a different set of cornerbacks other than what I seen last year. I cannot forsee Rookies Van Dyke or Chekwa of last year improving enough to be a solid second DB. Now Lito Sheppard provided a few good games when finally brought in by former Coach Hue Jackson, but was not as consistent as needed. Hopefully we can keep sheppard as a veteran presence, and with a full offseason with the Raiders he can improve.
If the Raiders are unable to secure any of the big name CB’s in free agency, this season could turn into a bigger mess on defense than last season was. Although I believe the Raiders offense, no matter which direction it goes in, will be vastly improved, I do not believe we can win games without signing a corner or two that is on the Market.
The Moves provide approximately $6 million in cap space which should provide much needed room to sign big free agent names like Finnegan.
Now thats not to say we wont have an impressive set of second year players this year with a full training camp and a defensive minded coach, but just to ease the thought of the players currently on the team being the starters, come free agency I hope the Raiders sign some big names to add to this defense.
