Nani scored one and made the other as Manchester United beat Reading 2-1 to book their place in the FA Cup quarter-finals on Monday.
Introduced for the injured Phil Jones just before half-time, Nani was a handle for Reading from the moment he came on. He had seen a terrific volley come back off the post before his deflected strike found the net following Antonio Valencia‘s centre 21 minutes from time.
Nani then turned provider, delivering a cross for Hernández to swiftly double United’s lead at the near post, despite a late scare when Jobi McAnuff pulled one back for Reading.
United did not have it all their own way, however, with David de Gea pulling off a string of terrific stops and Nemanja Vidić clearing off the line with the score 0-0.
United will now face the winner of Chelsea and Middlesbrough in the quarter-finals as Alex Ferguson’s side continue to challenge for trophies on three fronts
In other FA quarter-final ties, Premier League champions Manchester City, who saw off Leeds 4-0 in their fifth-round clash, were handed a home tie with Championship outfit Barnsley in the last eight as they look to repeat their 2010 FA Cup success.
Blackburn’s reward for their shock 1-0 victory over Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium yesterday was an away tie with fellow Championship side Millwall, who ended the run of non-league Luton in the fifth round with a 3-0 triumph.
League One Oldham, the lowest-ranked side still in the tournament, earned a fifth-round replay with Everton at Goodison Park after Matt Smith scored a stoppage-time equaliser in a 2-2 draw on Saturday.
