Even though it is not looking like we will see Cards ace Chris Carpenter in 2013 (maybe late in the season again) the Cardinals will still have a strong pitching staff.
The Cardinals have some great young arms and some great veterans, led by Adam Wainwright. Big #50 is coming off a season where he was re-establishing himself as a starter and he did so in a professional way, with glimpses of the old Adam Wainwright that had won 20 games and 19 games the two season before going down in Spring Training of 2011.
The Cards staff will also see some very talented young pitchers that are starting to come into their own. They have:
Trevor Rosenthal, Shelby Miller, Lance Lynn, Joe Kelly, Maikel Cleto and returning starter Jaime Garcia all 26 years of age and younger. All of which can bring the ‘pearl’ home with a little zip, too.
In addition, starters Jake Westbrook and hopefully 16 game winner Kyle Lohse will be back.
The Cardinals will again have a strong bullpen led by closer Jason Motte, who is not afraid of getting the ball up to the plate, either.
The loss of ace Chris Carpenter will be tough to deal with, but, second year manager Mike Matheny, whom took over for retiring future Hall of Fame manager Tony LaRussa last year, and did an outstanding job, will have his work cut out for him in 2013.
I see the Cardinals making the playoffs again. Sure, it is early, but, we here in St. Louis are positive.
