Return of the “Big Francona”

Terry Francona returns tonight to Boston as manager of the Cleveland Indians.  It will be Francona’s first trip back to Boston as an opposing manager.  As of the posting of this article, the Indians are leading 5-3 in the 5th inning in Fenway Park.  There were mostly cheers as Francona walked on the field at Fenway; He was very well liked in Boston by the fans and media but just wore out his welcome with ownership and management and lost control of the clubhouse.

He will do well with the Indians- I don’t believe that the Indians will go to the World Series this year but they are headed in the right direction.  Francona is one of the best managers in baseball and in my opinion is one of the top five.  Cleveland, with marginal talent is 26-19 and in first place in their division.  They do have some veteran leadership with Michael Bourn(.308 average), Nick Swisher, and Mark Reynolds.  Sports betting enthusiasts have been keeping a close eye on their improvement this season.

Francona is an excellent in game strategist, very good at communicating with players and well liked by the players.  He will get the most out of his team and expects the best every day.  Francona had a .574 winning percentage with the Red Sox at 744-552 which is excellent.

Compare that to Dusty Baker of the Reds who has a .523 winning percentage with the Reds and .497 winning percentage with the Cubs.  20 seasons of managing with no world series titles for Baker versus 2 titles for Francona.  Baker will never win a championship in Cincinnati even though he has the talent.

Terry Francona is a class act who has a good chance to make the Hall of Fame some day.  For tonight, he will return to the city that embraced him and there will always be a special place in the hearts of Red Sox nation for helping to bring a title there after 86 years of heartbreak.
