The Arizona Diamondbacks currently lead the NL West but it is a wide open division. Any one of the five teams- Arizona, Colorado, San Diego, LA Dodgers, or San Francisco could win this division and only 8.5 games separate the five teams right now. The Dbacks are led by young players like 25 year old Paul Goldschmidt and 26 year old Gerardo Parra, a very good manager in Kirk Gibson, a solid bullpen and a 9-0 start by Patrick Corbin.
Colorado has been sliding the last couple weeks but has won two in a row and is holding on to second place in the division tied with the Giants. They will stay close all year. The Giants have disappointed many of their fans this year with a lot of inconsistency but are still only three games out of first place. The Padres are really a sleeper team to watch out for with a lot of young players are gaining confidence every week. Players like Yonder Alonso and Everth Cabrera are helping the Padres stay in the race. Cabrera already has 84 hits and has scored 37 runs and Alonso has 29 RBI’s. The Pitching has been solid and playing in Petco Field obviously helps the E.R.A.. The team E.R.A. is a very respectable 4.12 and Jason Marquis in 9-2 for San Diego. At 38-38 and only 3.5 games out of first place, the Padres are poised to make a run in the “Wild West”.
The Dodgers are bringing up the rear in the division 8.5 games out but they will make a run at some point. With a very high payroll, the Dodgers are feeling the pressure to win and they have not lived up to expectations. I expect them to stay within 5-10 games but I do not think they will win the division this year. They do not seem to have the chemistry. I believe that Colorado, the Giants, and Arizona will fight it out for the division with San Diego and the Dodgers staying close. Any one could win it and it will be a real shootout in the “Wild Wild West”.
