Chiefs Crush Redskins

Washington RedskinsThe only thing more miserable than the weather Sunday afternoon was the play of the Washington Redskins. Washington gave up two first half special teams touchdowns as part of an avalanche of points for the Kansas City Chiefs who won 45-10 at snowy, icy and disappointed FedEx Field in Landover, Maryland.

The stadium was near empty at the beginning of the second half as the Skins tried to chip away at a 38-10 halftime deficit. They were not successful, going scoreless in the second half while losing their fifth straight game and falling to (3-10).

The Chiefs took advantage of poor special teams play by the Redskins who gave up 300 yards in return yardage, which included a Dexter McCluster 74-yard punt return for a touchdown. He finished the game with a franchise record  177 total punt return yards allowed, which included a 57-yarder, while setting up first half scoring opportunities. Chiefs kickoff returner Quintin Demps added a first half 95-yard return for a touchdown. For the game the Chiefs averaged more than 25 yards per punt return and 61.5 yards per kickoff return.

The score was 31-0 with 9:45 to play in the first half as the Chiefs scored on their first four drives while improving to (10-3).

Meanwhile,  Washington punted on four of their first five drives and Robert Griffin III threw an  interception which stalled another drive. He finished 12 for 26 for 164 yards with a touchdown pass to tight end Logan Paulsen as one of the lone bright spots of the day. RG3 was sacked four times in the deciding second quarter. Paulsen finished with three catches for 44 yards. Washington converted only three of 15 third down opportunities and running back Alfred Morris managed only 31 yards for the game.

The Redskins added a 50-yard field goal to end the half and that was the last time they would get on the board.

The second half saw the  Washington defense force their first three and out to begin the second half. Neither team scored in the third quarter.

The Chiefs running back Jamaal Charles finished with 151 yards on just 19 carries and was the beneficiary of some poor tackling by the Redskins defense on his way to averaging nearly eight yards per carry. He also had one rushing touchdown and was part of the first half Chief’s scoring barrage.

Chiefs backup running back Knile Davis scored on  a 17-yard touchdown run which made the score 45-10 with 13:37 left to play in the game.

After that score, Washington backup quarterback Kirk Cousins replaced RG3 and he finished the game seven for 16 for 59 yards. The few remaining fans cheered when the two minute warning was announced–ready to go home and left wondering what happened to the team that just last year won the NFC East division title as part of a seven game winning streak.
