Cincinnati Reds Look to Regroup Against Colorado Rockies After Sour Trip to Boston

The recent road trip to Fenway Park in Boston was one that the Cincinnati Reds would much rather forget about. After taking three of four from the division leading Brewers, the Reds fell 4-3 on consecutive days to the Red Sox.

On Tuesday, the Reds came from behind and scored two runs in the top of the eighth to tie the game at three. The score remained tied until to bottom half of the 12th inning when Grady Sizemore singled off the Green Monster in left field with a runner on second to end the game. Sizemore was a player who many thought would sign with the Reds this offseason, but opted for the Red Sox instead.

“We’re not going to lower our standards or our expectations and say, ‘We’re not supposed to win against the better teams because we’re a little banged up,’ Reds manager Bryan Price said. “It was a disappointing loss. It was a game that was winnable and we didn’t win it.”

It was another heartbreaker on Wednesday as the Red Sox scored two runs in the bottom half of the eighth inning to come from behind and take the second game 4-3. Cincinnati starter Mike Leake, who pitched seven innings allowing just two runs on eight hits, received praise from Red Sox manager John Farrell.

“Leake was outstanding for the time that he was in there,” Farrell said.

Injuries, which have plagued the team all year, continue to be a problem. The most recent injury to right fielder Jay Bruce will be a huge blow to the offense. Both Skip Schumaker and Roger Bernadina have seen time since the injury and played well in Boston. Aroldis Chapman has appeared in two minor league games and should be ready to return later this month if all goes as planned.

Cincinnati currently sits three games under .500 but are just six games out of first place and two games behind the second place St. Louis Cardinals.

Thursday is a travel day for the Reds, then they begin a three game series with the Colorado Rockies at home on Friday. Following another off day, they will have another series against the San Diego Padres at home as well.
