This week we saw Jessica Penne – Ranked #4 (Team Pettis – fifth pick) vs. Lisa Ellis – Ranked #13 (Team Melendez). Jessica Penne currently holds a record of 11-2 with fights from 2006-2013. Ellis currently holds a record of 15-8 with fights from 2004-2012. So far in this group of women I’ve researched Ellis is the longest fighter I’ve seen. Last week I talked a little bit about these two women having a history. Back at Invicta FC 1 in 2012 these two had a fight that some have dubbed the bloodiest female MMA fight ever. Check it out and judge for yourself.
This “rematch” was very much dominated by Jessica Penne. Besides a few good reversals I didn’t think Lisa Ellis really brought much to the fight. However, we saw our first non-decision fight of the season when Penne made Ellis tap out in the first round. I was really hoping after Penne beat Ellis in the first fight that Ellis would try to revenge her loss, but no luck. At least Penne left everything she had in the cage, I can’t say the same for Ellis. With Penne’s win, that makes Team Pettis 3-0.
Team Pettis is trying to go for 4-0 this week as they picked the next match-up: #1 Carla Esparza vs. #16 Angela Hill. Let’s first cover the #16 Angela “Overkill” Hill who is only 1-0, she fought this past April for the first time and won via TKO punches in Round 2. Pretty simple that she is very much a rookie and it will be hard to judge her talent going into this fight. Carla “Cookie Monster” Esparza on the other hand has been fighting since 2010 and is currently 9-2. That isn’t all, Esparza is currently the #13-ranked pound-for-pound female MMA fighter in the world by MMARising.com and the #3-ranked female strawweight according to the Unified Women’s MMA Rankings. Esparza was also the first Invicta FC Strawweight Champion and also competed in Bellator Fighting Championships’ first women’s tournament. Just by Esparza’s #1 seed, UFC must have high hopes for her. I’m looking forward to seeing what Esparza has to offer this week. On paper this fight looks one sided, time will tell and I hope as always everything gets left in the cage.
