This week featured the final Preliminary fight with #3 Tecia Torres (Team Pettis) vs. #8 Bec Rawlings (Team Melendez). This was Tecia Torres’ second chance in the tournament as she lost via unanimous decision against Randa Markos in the first fight of the season. When Justine Kish had to leave the competition due to knee injury Dana White let Torress take Kish’s spot since she was ranked #3 in the tournament. Tecia Torres is the #6-ranked female strawweight (115 lbs) fighter in the world according to the Unified Women’s MMA Rankings. Torres also has a record of 4-0 from fighting in 2012 & 2013. #8 Bec Rawlings has a record of 5-3 with fights from 2011-2013. In Rawlings wins 3 come from submission, 1 TKO and 1 decision.
I was really hoping that the trash talking that Rawlings was doing along with the fact that Torres had been eliminated once in this competition would ignite this fight however it really didn’t. The only time I saw some serious spark was towards the end of Round 1, both women laid into each other with some furious fists. In the end the fight ended after 2 rounds and was in favor of Torress via decision.
Torres earns the seventh victory of the season for Team Pettis, who improved to 7-1 in the competition. The quarterfinal matchups are announced in the order they’ll be fought with 3 of the 4 being “Pettis vs. Pettis”…
