On Saturday January 3rd, UFC light heavyweight champion Jon “Bones” Jones successfully defended his title against what many considered to be his toughest opponent to date, Daniel Cormier. From their brawl at in the MGM Grand lobby to their pre-fight banter one would expect Jones to have been on top of the world after defeating Cormier yet in his post fight interviews we saw a different side of Jones. The usually cheery and positive champion was filled with such hatred and disdain towards Cormier that he would not flash a smile.
In the weeks leading up to the fight, the NSAC (Nevada State Athletic Commission) requested that Jones be submitted to a random drug test for his upcoming title defense. The test took place in Jones’ home on December 4th.
Here’s a statement released by the UFC from UFC president Dana White:
Jones (21-1 MMA, 15-1 UFC) is one of the best fighters the UFC has ever seen not to mention the arguably greatest fighter in mixed martial arts today. Having successfully defended his title at UFC 182, Jones is on schedule to once again defend his light heavyweight title against the winner of Alexander Gustafsson vs Anthony Johnson who meet at UFC on Fox 14 on January 24th. The winner will face Jones later this year.
