Despite the snow on the ground in some places and the cold weather, spring is right around the corner. However the crack of the bat and the baseball hitting the gloves is music to the ears of fans. Games have begun in Arizona and Florida, meaning the baseball season is soon approaching.
Tonight is the opening night of the Ohio Baseball Weekly show on “ultimatesportstalk.com”. Dave Mitchell and Mark Donahue will co-host for the fifth season, talking about the exploits of the Cincinnati Reds and Cleveland Indians, making it the longest running show on the internet.
This year promises more and more information, guests and insight into both clubs. Each team comes into Goodyear, Arizona with their own set of problems and dilemmas to work out before the opening of the season.
For example, the Reds have to contend with the leg injury of all star first baseman Joey Votto. That malady caused him to miss much of the
2014 season and could be a lingering situation. Considering the Reds signed him to a contract extension two years ago for over $250 million and doesn’t conclude until the year 2023, fans have a reason for concern.
Pitching has also turned into a problem for the Reds. Last year it was a strength, this year they have traded away Mat Latos and Homer Bailey is suffering from an arm injury. Add to that it’s the contract year for Johnny Cuerto and the pitching staff is in disarray.
The Indians finished one game out of the payoffs last year, after making the post season in 2013. Many feel this is the best Indians club in years, yet they have questions marks also. Such as fielding, which was the worst in baseball just one year ago. They are predominately a left handed hitting team with no right handed power to speak of, which makes them susceptible to lefties again. Right field is a log jam and injuries will be a problems once again with Michael Bourne and Nick Swisher.
