The Bavarians will be without arguably their best player. In the extra time loss to Real Madrid, in the second leg of the UEFA Champions League Quarterfinals, 31-year old goalie Manuel Neuer fractured his left foot. He will miss at least eight weeks, meaning his season is over.
“Of course I’m sad I won’t be able to help the team in the final spurt of the season. I’m fully focused on recovering as soon as possible. That’s the main thing for me now.” Neuer said via FC Bayern Munchen’s website.
This may also mean that Germany will be without their number one goalie for FIFA’s Confederations Cup in Russia this summer. If so, Real Madrid’s Marc-Andre ter Stegen will man the net. Jochim Low, Germany’s coach, has already said that he is going to use the tournament to see what he has in terms of depth. This will give Neuer the time to get 100 percent.
28-year old Sven Ulrich will now man the net for Bayern Munich as they attempt to win their 26th Bundesliga title. Munchen sits 8 points ahead of Red Bull Leipzig. Ulrich has played in four games, and came from Stuttgart in 2015. He will get an opportunity to show what he is made of. Next week, Ulrich will be in net as the Deutscher Pokal (German Cup) semifinal Der Klassiker against rival Borussia Dortmund. He will also man five Bundesliga matches.
