The Maryland Terrapins thrashed the Marshall Thundering Herd 104-67 much to the delight of the ecstatic home crowd at Xfinity Center.
The game was close at the 5:24 mark of the first half and then the Terrapins (6-0) just took over the game with their running and gunning.
With the Terps up 34-32 they ended the half on a 19-6 run to take a 53-38 halftime lead.
After the break they continued their offensive dominance and began the second half on a 13-0 burst to essentially win the game with a lead of 66-38 with 16:15 to go in the now one-sided contest.
The Terps cleared the bench in the second half and had a lead as high as 44 points against a team that was supposed to be a tough fight and was in the NCAA tournament last season.
Maryland, who had five players finish in double figures, was led by their star guard Anthony Cowan Jr. who finished with a game-high 26 points, 19 in the first half, seven rebounds and six assists.
His freshman back court mate Eric Ayala has his coming out party, hitting five of six three-pointers while scoring a career-high 20 points and snagging four rebounds.
The paint was patrolled for Maryland by the beastly Bruno Fernando who finished with four blocked shots and a double-double of 18 points and 16 rebounds including a thunderous dunk on an inbounds play that was You-Tube worthy.
Maryland’s Jalen Smith and Darryl Morsell each finished with 10 points and five rebounds.
Terp’s freshman Serrell Smith Jr. and Aaron Wiggins finished with seven points coming off the bench.
Needless to say the Terps had a hot shooting night making 57 percent of their shots from the field including hitting nine of 16 from beyond the arc.
They were 25 of 36 from the free throw line and outrebounded the Thunder Herd 52-30.
Meanwhile, their defense held Marshall to 34 percent shooting from the floor including hitting eight of 31 from three-point land.
Jannson Williams led Marshall with 21 points and five rebounds and Darius George came off the bench to score 10 points and corral four rebounds in a losing effort for the (4-1) Thundering Herd.
