Real Madrid suffered their biggest ever home defeat in Europe as they were thrashed by CSKA Moscow in the Champions League. Real Madrid lost 3-0 to CSKA Moscow, losing to the Russians for the second time in the group stages.

With the defeat, it is the biggest defeat that Madrid has ever experienced at home in the Champions League.

Madrid’s last loss at home in the group stage of the Champions League was against AC Milan in the 09/10 season as the Italians won 3-2.

In addition to this, the last time a team defeated Madrid in both games on the group stage was Juventus in 08/09 season: 2-1 in Turin and 0-2 in Madrid.

Madrid had already won Group G, and Santiago Solari named a weakened team for the match with incumbent Thibaut Courtois still got the nod over Keylor Navas in goal. Javi Sanchez and Vallejo started at centre-back and Marcelo was back in at left-back, while Federico Valverde and Marco Llorente slotted into midfield. Fan favourite Vinicius was also back in the mix, joining Isco and Karim Benzema up top.

While Los Blancos started well and Vinicius and Marco Asensio were inches away from scoring. But Fedor Chalov curled home CSKA’s opener against the run of play and Georgy Schennikov volleyed in a second before half-time after Mario Fernandes’ shot was saved.

The Bernabeu was none too pleased and sent their team to the half-time dressing room with a shower of whistles. Solari needed to make a move and called on Gareth Bale to replace Benzema to start the second half, followed later by Llorente yielding his place to Toni Kroos.

With each minute that passed, the frustration of the home fans grew and their ire was mainly directed at Isco, who spoiled a good chance early in the half and heard whistles any time he touched the ball.

When Icelandic teenager Arnor Sigurdsson completed the stunning win with a strike from the edge of the box, the Bernabeu emptied out in disgust after another brutal performance from Solari’s side.

By the time the final whistle mercifully came, empty seats were everywhere as Real trudged off the pitch feeling the sting of one of their worst home defeats in recent memory.
