This weekend’s UFC 131 gave fans a little of everything. From fantastic Knockouts (Sam Stout, Dave Herman), slick Submissions (Nick Ring, Chris Weidman), and controversial Decisions (Michihiro Omigawa vs. Darren Elkins), UFC 131 delivered a very entertaining night of fights.
What is clear coming out of Vancouver is that Cain Velasquez is going to have his hands full in his first title defense against #1 Contender Junior Dos Santos. After dominating Shane Carwin for three rounds (almost stopping him late in the first), JDS proved once again why he is the next UFC Heavyweight Champion (my opinion).
We have also found the next contender for Jose Aldo’s Featherweight Championship, as Kenny Florian emerged with a Decision Victory over a game Diego Nunes. It wasn’t easy for KenFlo, however, as he found himself tested in the first round by his younger opponent. The veteran Florian made the necessary adjustments, and won the last two rounds decisively.
While not as profitable for the UFC as other ventures in to the Canadian (understandable, as the Vancouver Canucks are in a dogfight for the NHL’s Stanley Cup. And no matter how big and popular the UFC is in the Great White North, hockey is, and always will be King!), Dana White stated that he was very happy with the sales and response to this event. How pay-per-view buys will be impacted since cash-cow Brock Lesnar had to withdraw from the Main Event, who knows?
Looking back at the Roundtable Preview we did, I do know how successful I was in picking the winners. 5-0, BABY! Yeah, Brian Willey was 5-0 also, but the tiebreaker of choosing the correct finish put me over (Thank you “Pee Wee”!). Defending Champion Rob Fletcher dropped to a shameful 1-4! At least he is enjoying a worry-free vacation this weekend.
Here are the final results:
Chris Bragg 5-0 (WINNER!)
Brian Willey 5-0
Stephen Schlegel 4-1
Scott Keith 4-1
Larry Cassano, III 4-1
Joshua Heizer 3-2
Isaac Castillo 3-2
Rob Fletcher 1-4
