Leaving behind a weekend that saw the Biggest MMA fight of All-Time seemingly disappoint the audience for which it was intended, we prepare ourselves for a card that not only promises to be an exciting and action-packed thrill ride, but also one that could set the landscape for many of next year’s events.

UFC 139: Shogun vs. Henderson takes place this Saturday night at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, CA. Headlined by Light-Heavyweight Title eliminator, Dan Henderson (28-8, 5-2 UFC) makes his return to the UFC against former champion Mauricio “Shogun” Rua (20-5, 4-3 UFC).

Still the Strikeforce Light-Heavyweight Champion, and coming off the biggest win of his storied career (a 1st Round KO of Fedor Emelienenko), Henderson, has not fought in the UFC since his unforgettable KO victory over Michael Bisping at UFC 100. A contract dispute landed “Hendo” in Strikeforce, where he went 3-1 before resigning with the UFC in the summer.

In that same time span, Rua has gone 2-2, winning the Light-Heavyweight Title (vs. Lyoto Machida), then losing it in his first defense (vs. Jon Jones). Also battling injuries during this time, “Shogun” appeared back on track after a 1st Round KO of Forrest Griffin at UFC 134 in Rio.

Now, the two legends whose careers have paralleled each other, will match-up for the very first time. There is no reason to expect that this fight will not produce fireworks, and end with one man being stopped violently.

Speaking of fireworks and violent stoppages, the Co-Main Event should set the bar for the finale, featuring two competitors that are going to trade leather and kicks until someone falls. Wanderlei Silva (33-11-1, 1NC, 3-6 UFC) welcomes Cung Le (7-1 MMA, 16-0 Kickboxing) to the UFC.

The story here is simple; “The Axe Murder” is fighting for his UFC career, facing the chopping block after a humiliating 27 second KTFO loss against Chris Leben in July. Dana White wanted Silva to retire at that point, but fate and necessity has given Wandy one more chance inside the Octagon (Le’s original opponent was set to be Vitor Belfort, but an injury forced him out).

Cung Le, the highly exciting kick boxer and actor, is making is much anticipated UFC debut after a 17 month hiatus. His last fight came in June 2010, versus Scott Smith (2nd Round KO victory), where he avenged his only MMA loss. Ironically, every one of Le’s professional MMA fights have taken place in San Jose, so he will undoubtedly have the “Home Field Advantage”.

In what could be a “Main Event in any arena across the country” (credit: Gorilla Monsoon), “The California Kid” Urijah Faber (25-5, 1-1 UFC) battles fellow WEC Veteran Brian Bowles (10-1, 2-0 UFC).

This fight is significant because the winner will get the next shot at Dominick Cruz’s UFC Bantamweight Title (a title Bowles held while competing in WEC). I also look for this fight to end up winning Fight of the Night honors.

Rounding out the Pay-Per-View are two stellar match-ups; Martin Kampmann vs. Rick Story, and Stephan Bonnar vs. Kyle Kingsbury.

For the record, my picks for the UFC 139 are as follows:

Kyle Kingsbury by Decision
Rick Story by Decision
Urijah Faber by Decision (Fight of the Night)
Cung Le by 1st Round KO (KO of the Night)
Dan Henderson by 3rd Round TKO

Those are my picks, what are yours?

You can leave your picks in the comment section below, via EMAIL, or on The Official Facebook Page of The Ultimate Fight Show. And don’t forget to follow me on Twitter, @TheBraggMan.

While the UFC on FOX special has gotten most of the hype this month, UFC 139 looks like it could steal the spotlight (keep in mind that the Velasquez/dos Santos Heavyweight Title Fight was originally slated to headline this card).

Have a great weekend, and enjoy UFC 139!

The time is finally upon us! We have finally arrived at what will turn out to be the biggest, most important night in MMA history! One fight is going to usher in a new era in the ever-maturing world of mixed-martial arts.

Ladies and Gentlemen, IT’S TIME!

Zuffa proudly presents UFC on FOX 1. For the first time on Network Television, the UFC Heavyweight Title will be defended as Champion Cain Velasquez (returning from a 13 month absence) faces #1 Contender Junior dos Santos.

Without hyperbole, this is the BIGGEST, most important fight in MMA history. This one fight could make or break MMA’s future, regarding whether or not the sport will finally become the mainstream entity that Boxing did many years ago.

The television special on Saturday Night will be broadcast on the FOX Network, home of the NFL, Major League Baseball, NASCAR, and other international sporting organization. This is the first UFC event to be televised by FOX under its groundbreaking deal that could end up being worth close to 1 Billion dollars over the next 7 years (YES! That is BILLION, with a “B”).

So why would the UFC trust Velasquez and dos Santos with the honor and responsibility of being the Main Event (and the only fight scheduled to be televised on the broadcast) of such an important show? Because there is nothing bigger in the Fight Game than a Heavyweight Title Fight.

Just look at Boxing’s rich history. The biggest draw has traditionally been the Heavyweight Champion. Whether it was Jack Dempsey, Gene Tunney, Joe Louis, Rocky Marciano, Sonny Liston, Muhammad Ali, Joe Frazier, George Forman, or Mike Tyson, the entire World would stop for a Heavyweight Championship Fight.

This Saturday’s bout is going to be no different, as no title in the sport of MMA is bigger than the UFC’s Heavyweight Title.

Cain Velasquez won the title last October by defeating the MMA’s (arguably most popular, but certainly) most polarizing figure, former WWE Champion Brock Lesnar (who will be providing analysis on Saturday Night). Unfortunately, he tore his rotator cuff during that bout, and has been sidelined since. One of the biggest question marks coming in is whether or not the layoff will be a factor.

MMA Legend Frank Shamrock told The Ultimate Fight Show (in an exclusive interview to be aired at Noon ET this Saturday) that he feels Velasquez will be ready:

The Cain we saw before was ‘Baby Cain’, while the Cain we will see Saturday Night is going to be ‘Cain 2.0’. And that is a scary thought!

Junior dos Santos, on the other hand, has had a much different 2011. First, he was a coach on The Ultimate Fighter, opposite the aforementioned Lesnar. The show was supposed to cumulate with a #1 Contender’s Match-Up in June, but Lesnar was forced to withdraw due to his second attack of Diverticulitis. Instead, dos Santos fought and defeated Shane Carwin to earn his shot at the UFC Heavyweight Crown.

Both Velasquez and dos Santos are handling the weight of the moment with ease and brevity. In fact, I would be willing to bet that those two are feeling the least pressure of anyone else involved.

Dana White, the outspoken and ever confident UFC President, spoke earlier this week about the pressure he feels to deliver an exciting event:

I’m a mess over this thing; I’m a mess. I’m telling you guys. I’m not trying to play it cool or whatever. But I’m a [expletive] wreck. I’m a wreck. I haven’t slept in four days. I feel weird. I can’t wait for Saturday to be over with. I just want to get it over with. I want to nail this thing, I want to do it right, and I want to move forward. I just want to get this first one under my belt.

The excitement, nerves, and anxiety felt by the UFC brass is not lost on many of the longtime fans and fighters that have invested parts of their lives to this passion called MMA. Many of our Roundtable regulars have weighed-in on the Title Fight itself, and what the huge event means to them.

Amanda Horton – Freelance Writer covering MMA and all things fast and exciting.

This will be a really good fight. It would do some good for UFC to get exposure to more mainstream audiences. Of course there would be no money made on it outside the arena but for fans like me who can’t always watch it on PPV, this is a win-win. I hope Cigano wins but I have a feeling Cain might retain. It could go either way.

Stephen Bass – MMA Fighter, currently appearing on Season 14 of The Ultimate Fighter.

The significance of the premiere organization in the sport of MMA broadcasting a heavyweight title fight on network TV is huge. This is a huge step toward mixed material arts becoming an American pass time such as football or baseball. As far as what it means to me… I feel like it brings me personally a step closer to earning a viable living in the sport I love and I’m thankful to the UFC and the Fox network for that.
As for the fight itself, I believe Cain will use his wrestling to edge out a game Junior Dos Santos via decision. There is a good possibility that this will be a war!

Frank Kline – He would rather be fishing with his girls and watching Chris Leben KO Highlights more than anything else.

In my mind this is no doubt the best match up of all around athletes and devastating fighters that MMA has ever seen in the heavyweight division. What better fight to put in primetime on network TV. I feel like Cain is the best heavyweight wrestler in UFC, but Dos Santos is no walk in the park to take down. I don’t think I remember anyone ever taking Dos Santos to the ground and if Cain has the same problem, then he will be in trouble. I believe that Dos Santos is too strong and athletic for Cain to hold down even if he gets him to the mat. I am calling for a new champ, Junior dos Santos by TKO.

Greg Mitchell – Owner/CEO of UltimateSportsTalk.com

UFC’s debut on FOX showcases the true advancement and popularity that has developed for mixed martial arts. Aside from the obvious appeal of the violence in MMA, I think many fans are fascinated by the intelligence that is required to out-think and out-maneuver an opponent. FOX is taking advantage of a phenomenal time in MMA history – it will be very interesting to see how this relationship will change the landscape of MMA.

Frank Shamrock – MMA Legend, Strikeforce Color Commentator

To have the Heavyweight Title on the FOX debut, I think that is a HUGE plus to the opportunity for what the night could mean. I think it’s the biggest night ever for the sport, and I just hope it’s the best night ever. (Shamrock’s prediction for the Title Fight can be heard, along with his full interview, on Saturday’s edition of The Ultimate Fight Show)

Brian Willey – Owner/Operator of Effingham Computer Services in Rincon, GA.

No doubt that this is the biggest night in the history of the sport. I look for this to be the first fight of a possible series (a trilogy, maybe) between the two. The biggest MMA fight of the decade.

Larry Cassano, III – Boxing Columnist at UltimateSportsTalk.com, and Host of The Ultimate Fight Show.

The biggest fight in MMA history, hands down.

I will pose the same question to YOU, the reader: What does the UFC on FOX debut mean to you, as a fan, and to the sport of MMA as a whole? And, of course, who will win the fight, Cain Velasquez or Junior dos Santos.

You may leave your answers in the comment’s section below, send them via EMAIL, or post them on The Official Facebook Page of The Ultimate Fight Show.

Have a wonderful weekend, and enjoy watching history unfold Saturday Night!

Welcome back to the Roundtable Preview for UFC 137: Penn vs. Diaz!

Of course, this wasn’t the card we were expecting less than two months ago…

The originally scheduled Main Event for UFC 137 was supposed to see the last Strikeforce Welterweight Champion Nick Diaz challenge the UFC Welterweight Champion, and the generally recognized #2 ranked Pound-for-Pound fighter in the world, Georges St-Pierre. Unfortunately, Diaz’s inability and unwillingness to participate in the required media junkets prompted Dana White to punish Diaz by pulling him from the Main Event, and replacing him with top contender Carlos Condit.

Diaz wasn’t off the hook for October 29, though, as he was reassigned to the Co-Main Event slot versus BJ Penn (Condit’s original opponent).

Even with the Main Event shuffle, this card was still one of the most anticipated all year. The undercard featured 2 BIG Heavyweight Matchups; undefeated fan-favorite Matt “Meathead” Mitrione vs. Cheick Kongo, and Roy “Big Country” Nelson vs. Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic.

Unfortunately, a mere 12 days away from Fight Day, St-Pierre was forced to withdraw due to a knee sprain. Rather than try and shoehorn another fighter onto the show to face Condit, it was decided to have Condit pulled from the card all together, and let him wait for his title shot.

Ironically, this turn of events elevated Nick Diaz back into the Main Event with his battle against BJ Penn. So, while the loss of the Welterweight Title Match takes a bit of the sizzle off of the event, fans should still expect to see a night of fun and exciting fights.

Joining me at the Roundtable this week is a Who’s Who of friends and fans that would love nothing more than to be the King (or Queen) of us all:

*The claims made above about The Ultimate Fight Show do indeed represent the thoughts and opinions of UltmateSportsTalk.com, the participants of this Roundtable Preview, and the rest of the free World.

Let’s do this!

Jeff Curran vs. Scott Jorgensen

Brian – Scott Jorgensen by KO

Scott – I’ll take a shot in the dark and say Jorgensen by TKO in the 3rd Round.

Isaac – Jeff Curran

Frank – Jeff Curran

Amanda – Curran via Submission

Stephen – Jorgensen via Decision

Tadd – Facts (as I remember them, but are probably wrong): Urijah Faber is the only guy to have finished Curran in 10 years. Curran hasn’t finished a fight for a win in almost 5 years against lesser competition than Jorgensen.

Jorgensen will set the pace of this fight, and despite Curran’s wealth of cage experience, I don’t think he can match that pace with effective offense which will get him behind on the scorecards. I don’t know if Jorgensen’s pace alone will lead to a finish against a guy that knows every trick in the book, but a pretty easy 30-27 decision in Jorgensen’s favor seems probable. Jorgensen via Unanimous Decision.

Larry – Scott Jorgensen by Unanimous Decision

Jenny – Scott Jorgensen

Chris – I’ve become a big Scott Jorgensen over the last year, so I am picking him to win this one here by 2nd Round TKO.

(Scott Jorgensen 7-3)

Hatsu Hioki vs. George Roop

Brian – Hatsu Hioki by Decision

Scott – Roop by Decision

Isaac – Hatsu Hioki

Frank – George Roop

Amanda – Hioki via Decision

Stephen – Hioki via Decision

Tadd – From what I’ve heard from Roop leading up to this fight, I think he may be underestimating Hioki. In Sengoku, Hioki dominated Marlon Sandro and beat (but lost a shit decision to) Michihiro Omigawa – both guys I might slightly/definitely (respectively) favor over Roop. So by my own version of MMA math futures, I’m picking Hioki. I believe Roop has big finish fever and will be looking for that dramatic moment (high kicks, pulling a flying triangle if they get tangled in a clinch against the cage – something like that) but I believe one of those risks will get him put on his back and pounded out. Hioki via 2nd Round TKO.

Larry – Hatsu Hioki by Submission in 2nd Round

Jenny – George Roop

Chris – Hioki’s Submission skills are world class, and I expect him to use put them on display against a game George Roop. Hatsu Hioki via Submission, in Round 1.

(Hatsu Hioki 7-3)

Mirko”Cro Cop” Filipovic vs. Roy Nelson

Brian – Cro Cop by Decision

Scott – This one could be ugly. Nelson was kind of exposed by Frank Mir, but if he catches Cro Cop with a good punch, he’ll be fine. Mirko’s downfall saddens me and I don’t see him turning it around here.

Nelson will probably send Cro Cop into retirement with a KO in the 1st Round.

Isaac – Roy Nelson

Frank – Roy Nelson

Amanda – Roy Nelson via Decision

Stephen – Nelson via Decision

Tadd – I love both guys. One was my favorite fighter for years, the other I resemble in certain areas. But, if I don’t see a head kick KO in the UFC before Mirko retires, I will be a very sad man indeed. My official pick is Cro Cop by head kick in minute one of round one just for old time’s sake.

This is what I actually think will happen. Nelson’s game plan, I would only assume. would be to rush inside Cro Cop’s reach and take him down from against the fence and put him where Nelson will have the biggest advantage. Nelson will look to “pitter-patter batter” him from side control like he did to Kimbo. Cro Cop clearly has a notoriously bad ground game, but he is hard to take down and keep down, which is something I think Big Country’s ego will refuse to recognize for the first half of this fight. I think this will leave Nelson looking for takedowns from out of range and forcing him to resort to throwing that haymaker overhand a thousand times that, unfortunately for Cro Cop, I think will eventually land. And we know how that looks. So basically, no matter who wins, I can take credit for calling it correctly. Cro Cop by KO Head Kick in Round 1 (FIRST MINUTE!).

Larry – Roy Nelson by Unanimous Decision

Jenny – Roy Nelson

Chris – I have picked against Cro Cop his last several fights, thinking he would be put out to pasture by a vicious KO. Why stop that trend now? “Big Country” by 1st Round KTFO.

(Roy Nelson 8-2)

Cheick Kongo vs. Matt Mitrione

Brian – “Meathead” by KO

Scott – I’m intrigued by Meathead, as he’s been getting better and better since the Ultimate Fighter. This should be a big time slugfest, and although I’m cheering for Mitrione, I think Kongo is still the better fighter. Cheick Kongo by KO in the 2nd Round.

Isaac – Cheick Kongo

Frank – “Meathead” will finish Kongo (KO).

Amanda – Matt Mitrione by TKO

Stephen – Kongo via 2nd Round TKO

Tadd – There are a lot of unknowns in this fight. Can Mitrione win a fight against a guy with legit kickboxing on the feet? Can Kongo out-wrestle Mitrione and hold him down or GNP the entire fight? Will Mitrione gas out on the ground and give up a choke or TKO? How suspect is Kongo’s chin?

Mitrione will outweigh Kongo by 30lbs on fight day but, he has re-sculpted his body for this fight. He looks much leaner, which speaks to how seriously he is taking his conditioning, and perhaps his cardio, that has been a bit of a question mark in the past, won’t be a factor this time. That said, I still have to think Kongo will be the fresher of the two if the fight gets into later rounds (if Kongo doesn’t get knocked out and woken up 5 times during opening rounds), especially if Kongo completes a couple of takedowns and lands some leg kicks early to take some pep out of Mitrione’s strikes. If Mitrione doesn’t defend the takedowns against the cage and punish Kongo on the breaks, Kongo will grind out a decision win. It seems only slightly less likely to me, but if Mitrione got the KO in a takedown attempt scramble in the middle of the fight, it wouldn’t shock me at all. Cheick Kongo by Unanimous Decision.

Larry – Matt Mitrione by 2nd Round TKO

Jenny – Matt Mitrione

Chris – I have never been a Cheick Kongo fan, but have come to appreciate his toughness and resilience after his last few fights. With that being said, I LOVE “Meathead”, and will be vehitmately rooting for him to win this fight in spectacular fashion. Mitrione by KO in Round 2.

(Matt Mitrione 6-4)

MAIN EVENT

Nick Diaz vs. B.J. Penn

Brian – BJ Penn by Submission

Scott – Tough one to call. Penn looked completely dominant knocking out Matt Hughes, but you’d have to think that Diaz’s striking is going to be at a much higher level than that. I think UFC might be hoping for another Penn vs. GSP rematch, so I’ll say Penn by Decision.

Isaac – BJ Penn

Frank – Diaz/Penn will be a war, If I have to pick, I will go Diaz by Decision.

Amanda – BJ Penn by Decision

Stephen – Diaz via 3rd Round TKO

Tadd – When two guys are great in a certain skill area, the fight is often contested for the most part in other areas. Similar to two college wrestlers that crazy-box for 3 rounds, Nick and BJ both have great boxing. So, by the “styles make fights” rule, this fight will likely finish elsewhere. There is the occasional exception to that rule for guys like…well like Nick Diaz (see P.Daley). But hey, let’s just conveniently ignore that.

They ARE both great boxers (for mma), but Nick hasn’t fought anyone in ages with boxing as good as BJ’s. The only minute differences between Nick’s recent opponents’ boxing and BJ’s is good head movement, good footwork, good counter striking, the ability to create good combos, and an iron chin (just those small details). The omnipresent question is about BJ’s conditioning (especially at 170). But really, his cardio has held against in bouts that were contested mostly on the feet.

How I think it will play out: Unable to land clean and getting tagged with counters, Diaz will be looking for takedowns. BJ should easily defend Nick’s lunging takedowns and make him pay in the transitions. If he can hurt Diaz on the way in for a takedown, or with a counter left hook on an angle and knock Diaz down, we all know that when BJ smells blood, the end is near and the finish will come via punches soon after. BJ Penn by TKO in Round 2.

Larry – BJ Penn by Split Decision

Jenny – BJ Penn

Chris – This should be a fantastic fight, and I am really looking forward to it! Before the Diaz/GSP fight fell through, I was actually leaning toward picking Diaz. After being demoted, then falling back into the Main Event, I feel that the Strikeforce Champion will have an even bigger chip on his shoulder, and will be looking to impress. As good as Penn looked at the weigh-ins, I still can’t be derailed from the Diaz train. Diaz wins this fight via Unanimous Decision.

(BJ Penn 7-3)

After an extended hiatus (due to lack of response and participation), popular demand has dictated that this weekend’s UFC Pay-Per-View is worthy of the Roundtable treatment. As excited as I am for this show, I am more than happy to oblige.

So, without further ado…

Welcome to the return of The Roundtable Preview, as we forecast UFC 136: Edgar vs. Maynard III!

UFC 136 may be the most stacked card that Zuffa has presented since UFC 100 over two years ago. Featuring two Championship fights, and two fights that may immediately impact two title pictures, this show is shaping up on paper to be one for the ages.

The Main Event is the third installment in the trilogy that is Frankie Edgar vs. Gray Maynard. Their first match, back in April 2009, saw Maynard (10-0-1, 1 NC) hand Edgar (13-1-1) his only professional loss. After winning 5 straight (including 2 over future Hall of Famer BJ Penn) Edgar found himself defending his Lightweight Title against Maynard on January 1st of this year.

In what I personally contend is still the Fight of the Year, “The Bully” and “The Answer” waged a back and forth war that was fittingly decided a draw by the judges. Almost immediately, Dana White declared there was going to be a rematch. Originally scheduled for UFC 130 in May, both fighters were injured during training. That delay only heightened the anticipation even more, and it has now finally arrived.

If the Lightweight Title fight was not enough, the Co-Main Event sees fan favorite Kenny Florian (15-5) challenge the #3 Pound-for-Pound Fighter in the entire world, UFC Featherweight Champion Jose Aldo (19-1).

“KenFlo” is the only fighter in UFC history to fight in four different weight classes (debuting on the original Ultimate Fighter as a Middleweight, and progressing down the scale from there). After beating Diego Nunes at UFC 131 in his Featherweight debut, Florian was awarded this shot at the title.

In his way is the “Brazilian Buzzsaw” known as Jose (pronounced ‘Joe-Say’) Aldo. After rolling through the WEC, and compiling a 12 fight winning streak, Aldo debuted at UFC 129 against a very game but outmatched Mark Hominick. Although impressive, that Unanimous Decision victory was not the best that Aldo had to offer. To the fans that were just being introduced to the Champion, the hype may have seemed to be too much. Will Aldo be able to live up to his billing against one of the most versatile fighters in the game, or will Florian fulfill his destiny by becoming a World Champion?

In addition to the headlining Title Fights, Chael Sonnen and Brian Stann meet to decide the next challenger for Anderson Silva’s Middleweight Crown, while Melvin Guillard attempts to put himself at the front of the line for a future Lightweight Title shot against the always dangerous Joe Lauzon.

As always, your Roundtable is made up of a hodgepodge of fans that each bring that something special with their picks. Joining us this time out are:

*The claims made above about The Ultimate Fight Show do indeed represent the thoughts and opinions of UltmateSportsTalk.com, the participants of this Roundtable Preview, and the rest of the free World.

And now, on to the picks!

Leonard Garcia vs. Nam Phan

Brian – Garcia by Bitch Slap and Tapout, though Phan might tap himself before the night is over with (fans who remember Phan’s stint on The Ultimate Fighter should get this joke).

Scott – I’m predicting they punch each other in the face a lot. I’m going to flip a coin and say Garcia by KO.

Isaac – Leonard Garcia

Frank – Nam Phan

Greg – Nam Phan by Submission

Matt – Nam Phan (he should have one last time)

Stephen – Leonard Garcia via 2nd Round TKO

Larry – Nam Phan by Submission in 2nd Round

Jenny – Phan by Submission

Chris – Nam Phan was robbed in their first matchup back in December, and I suspect he’ll right that wrong here, by Unanimous Decision.

(Nam Phan 6-4)

Melvin Guillard vs. Joe Lauzon

Brian – Melvin Guillard Knockout

Scott – The Young Assassin looked like a contender the last time around, and I don’t see things going differently for him here. Guillard by First Round KO.

Isaac – Melvin Guillard

Frank – “The Young Assassin” Melvin Guillard

Greg – Joe Lauzon by Decision

Matt – Gullard by KO

Stephen – Melvin Guillard by 1st Round KO

Larry – Guillard by KO in the 2nd Round

Jenny – Guillard by KO

Chris – “The Young Assassin” is riding a 5 fight winning streak (3 by KO), and is on the doorstep of a Lightweight Title shot, once the jam at the top gets cleaned up. Although Lauzon is dangerous, especially on the ground fighting for submissions, I look for Guillard to not tempt it, and win this by TKO in the 2nd Round.

(Melvin Guillard 9-1)

Chael Sonnen vs. Brian Stann

Brian – Stann via Knockout

Scott – This is like a pro wrestling match, with Stann being the supreme Babyface and Sonnen the arrogant heel who overlooks his opponent because he wants Anderson Silva for ONE! MORE! MATCH! (That’s a wrestling reference for you MMA snobs reading this). Sonnen had a miracle run against Silva, but I think Stann wins the Decision here due to stronger wrestling. This fight needed more promos from the participants, I think.

Isaac – Brian Stann

Frank – Brian Stann

Greg – Chael Sonnen by Decision

Matt – Chael Sonnen

Stephen – Chael Sonned by 2nd Round TKO (GNP !!!)

Larry – Sonnen by Unanimous Decision

Jenny – Stann by KO

Chris – After a slew legal issues and failed drug tests, this marks Sonnen’s return to the Octagon after 14 months. His last action saw him dominate Anderson Silva for 4½ Rounds before falling victim to a Triangle. Brian Stann comes in after three straight impressive finishes (2 KO’s, 1 Sub) after dropping down from Light-Heavyweight, and is determined to be the man to knock Silva off the top of Middleweight Mountain. I love both of these guys, and hate to pick one over the other, but I am going to pick Sonnen (by Decision) so that we can get the rematch with Silva that could end up being the most hyped rematch in UFC History.

(Brian Stann/Chael Sonnen 5-5)

Co-Main Event
Featherweight Championship
©Jose Aldo vs. Kenny Florian

Brian – Aldo via Tapout

Scott – I love Kenny Florian. He’s awesome. I’m glad he’s willing to drop down and find different competition and hopefully give this division some juice. Of course, he’s not beating Aldo, who will probably leg kick him into a quivering pulp and then Submit him in, say, the Third Round. But I’ll still love Florian anyway.

Isaac – Kenny Florian

Frank – Jose Aldo

Greg – Jose Aldo by KO

Matt – Ken Flo (fellow Gracie Barra Brother)

Stephen – Jose Aldo by 4th Round TKO

Larry – Aldo by Unanimous Decision

Jenny – Aldo by Submission

Chris – The Jose Aldo (#3 P4P Fighter in the World) that debuted at UFC 129 was not the dominant Champion that WEC fans were used to seeing (taking nothing away from Mark Hominick). Against Kenny Florian, the best Jose Aldo will need to show up if he plans to keep his title. A rough weight cut in his Featherweight debut in June did not do “KenFlo” any favors, and he struggled a bit in that fight. His body should be adjusted by now, but I don’t think it will be enough. I would normally predict a finish in favor of Aldo, but I will say he wins by Decision here. This may end up being close enough to warrant the “controversy talk” we seem to be getting used to. Will this be only the first fight between these two?

(Jose Aldo 8-2)

Main Event
Lightweight Championship
©Frankie Edgar vs. Gray Maynard

Brian – Edgar by Decision

Scott – I’m hoping for a decisive win here by someone to put this thing to bed, and so that Clay Guida can finally get a title shot. Maynard’s promo on the Versus show to build this up could have been delivered better by a Speak N’ Spell, so hopefully Edgar wins, probably by yet another Decision, because he doesn’t seem to finish fights anymore.

Isaac – Frankie Edgar

Frank – Frankie Edgar

Greg – Frankie Edgar by Decision

Matt – Gray “The Bully” Maynard

Stephen – Frankie Edgar by Decision

Larry – Maynard by TKO in 4th Round

Jenny – Edgar by Decision

Chris – These two are so evenly matched, it’s not even funny. Their fight on New Year’s Day still holds up as Fight of the Year in my eyes, and I fear that I will be unreasonably disappointed if this battle doesn’t wind up just as epic. I have been saying Edgar will win this by Decision, but DAMNIT, I just finished watching the Countdown Special, and am now changing my mind (go ahead Larry, tell me you told me so)! Gray Maynard will be the NEW Lightweight Champion of the World, as he will get the Unanimous Decision Victory, 49-46.

(Frankie Edgar 7-3)

If MMA fans do not think that this weekend’s UFC Rio event is a HUGE deal for the UFC, then they have not been paying attention.

For only the second time in its history (and the first time since 1998), the UFC is returning to the birthplace of modern MMA, Brazil. The fans in Rio responded by selling out the HSBC Arena (estimated 15,000 seats) in 74 minutes. The UFC responded by giving them a stacked card featuring some of the biggest and best Brazilian in history.

The Main Event pits Middleweight Champion (and Pound-For-Pound King) Anderson Silva against Japanese great Yushin Okami. “The Spider” is currently riding a 13 fight winning streak, including 8 consecutive title defenses, and looks to continue his quest to be known as the Greatest Fighter of All-Time.

Yushin Okami was actually the last man earn a victory over Silva. All the way back in January of 2006, Anderson knocked out Okami with an up-kick to the face. Yushin’s knees were down, however, and Silva was disqualified. Both men acknowledge that there is unfinished business with each other, and are looking to prove once and for all how their first meeting would have/should have ended.

The Co-Main Event is another rematch, as Mauricio “Shogun” Rua seeks to avenge his loss to the first Ultimate Fighter Winner, Forrest Griffin. It was Rua’s highly touted UFC debut, and Forrest ruined it by submitting “Shogun” with 15 seconds left in the fight. Since that night in 2007, both fighters have scored monumental victories, have been the UFC Light-Heavyweight Champion, and both have been embarrassed in fights by superior opponents. This fight could possibly decide which fighter is ready to take a step back toward the title picture, and which man is going fall closer to the dreaded “gate keeper” position.

The third high profile fight of the night is one that almost guarantees a KO or Submission finish. Legend Antônio Rodrigo “Minotauro” Nogueira returns after an 18 month layoff to face one of the Heavyweight Division’s most promising up and comers, Brendan Schaub. “The Hybrid”, who was an Ultimate Fighter runner-up, is currently 8-1, is coming off a KO of the Night performance against another MMA Hall of Famer, Mirko Cro Cop. The question here is whether the veteran Nogueira has enough left in the tank to take Brendan down and work his BJJ magic, or will the younger and hungry Schaub be able to land one of those bombs he is becoming known for.

So, with one of the biggest UFC events in recent memory, I give you one of the biggest Roundtables we’ve had! Joining us this week are:

Rob Fletcher – Realtor, Republican Flag-Bearer, proud Shit-Stirrer, and an Almighty Great One (seriously, just ask him).

Isaac Castillo – Currently in Kuwait, and sweating his ass off in the desert for the greater good.

Joshua Heizer – MMA Senior Editor at UltimateSportsTalk.com, Anderson Silva fanboy, and (alleged) stalker of Ariel Helwani.

Greg Mitchell – Owner and Brainchild behind UltimateSportsTalk.com.

Larry Cassano, III – Boxing Columnist at UltimateSportsTalk.com, and Host of the #1 Rated, Highly Underappreciated, and GREATEST SHOW IN THE HISTORY OF INTERNET RADIO*, The Ultimate Fight Show.

On to the picks!

Luiz Cane vs. Stanislav Nedkov

Brian – Luiz Cane by Submission

Scott – Nedkov by Decision

Rob – Stanislav Nedkov

Isaac – Luiz Cane

Joshua – Nedkov by Decision

Frank – Luiz Cane

Greg – Luiz Cane

Larry – Cane by KO in the 1st Round

Chris – Luiz Cane is fun to watch, and I hope he wins via 2nd Round TKO.

Edson Barboza vs. Ross Pearson

Brian – Ross Pearson by Decision

Scott – I have nothing particularly witty to add here. Pearson by Decision.

Rob – Edson Barboza

Isaac – Ross Pearson

Joshua – Barboza by 2nd Round Submission

Frank – Ross Pearson

Greg – Edson Barboza

Larry – Barboza by Unanimous Decision

Chris – This is a toss-up, so I will take Ross Pearson via Split Decision.

Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira vs. Brendan Schaub

Brian – Schaub by Decision

Scott – I really like Schaub and think he’s going to be the true find of the Ultimate Fighter season, with Roy Nelson having been exposed pretty clearly. He’s got good knockout power, and most importantly a total lack of douchebag tattoos. Nog has been knocked out a couple of times recently, so he’s vulnerable to it. I don’t see it changing here. Schaub by KO.

Rob – Brendan “The Hybrid”Schaub

Isaac – Brendan Schaub

Joshua – Schaub via Decision

Frank – Brendan Schaub

Greg – Big Nog

Larry – Schaub via Unanimous Decision

Chris – I am a big fan of Brendan Schaub, and expect him to continue his rise toward the Heavyweight upper echelon. Another big KO of a future Hall of Famer may result in a new nickname. May I suggest “Legend Killer” (Randy Orton be-damned!)? Schaub by KO.

Co-Main Event
Forrest Griffin vs. Mauricio “Shogun” Rua

Brian – “Shogun” Rua by KO

Scott – Despite his recent success as an author, I don’t think the pen is mightier than the sword here. Griffin is getting older and is probably going to get knocked out. Rua by KO.

Rob – Forrest by Decision

Isaac – Forrest Griffin

Joshua – Forrest Griffin by Decision

Frank – Mauricio “Shogun” Rua

Greg – “Shogun” Rua

Larry – “Shogun” by 2nd Round Submission

Chris – “Shogun” is a legend fighting in his backyard having held titles in both Pride and the UFC, and defeating a laundry list of greats along the way. Forrest is a Legend for his wins against Stephan Bonner and “Rampage” Jackson (for the Light-Heavyweight Title). I look for Rua to rebound from his loss to Jon Jones, and KO Forrest in the 2nd Round.

Main Event
For the UFC Middleweight Title
©Anderson Silva vs. Yushin Okami

Brian – Anderson Silva via KO (Crane Kick)

Scott – Even though Silva has to lose SOMETIME, this is not the time. Part of me hopes that it’s Sonnen
that finally does get his rematch and wins the title, because it would be the most interesting story. Silva by KO.

Rob – Anderson Silva

Isaac – Anderson Silva

Joshua – Anderson Silva via 1st Round KO

Frank – Anderson Silva

Greg – Anderson Silva

Larry – Anderson Silva by 1st Round KO

Chris – Outside of Chael Sonnen, Yushin Okami (who has been training extensively with Sonnen), may have the best chance at this time to defeat Silva. Strong wrestling and a powerful clinch game is the same “kryptonite” Sonnen used to take “The Spider” to his limit a year ago. However, I don’t see Anderson being dethroned having the ultimate home-cage advantage. And much like Scott, I am personally rooting for a Silva/Sonnen rematch. Anderson Silva via 3rd Round TKO.

Let’s review the favorites.

Luiz Cane 6-3
Ross Pearson 5-4
Brendan Schaub 8-1
Mauricio “Shogun” Rua 6-3
Anderson Silva 9-0

I highly recommend checking out the replay of this show if/when Versus broadcasts it.

As for our Roundtable competition, Stephen Schlegel takes care of business like he was never gone, defeating your’s truely via tie-breaker. Congratulations Stephen!

The full results are as follows:

Stephen Schlegel 5-2 (WINNER)

Chris Bragg 5-2

Larry Cassano, III 3-4

Joshua Heizer 1-6

Be sure to catch The Ultimate Fight Show this Saturday at Noon ET, as Larry and I will recap this show in greater detail, review the controversial Boxing Match between Abner Mares and Joseph Agbeko, look ahead to UFC Rio (134), answer the Question of the Week, and take your calls about whatever is on your mind.

*********************************************************************************************************

UFC on Versus 5 takes place tonight at 9 PM, LIVE from Milwaukee, WI. It should be an excellent show, and we here at the Roundtable are going to tell you who is going to win.

Joining us this week are the following prophets seeking Roundtable glory:

Joshua Heizer – MMA Senior Editor at UltimateSportsTalk.com, new father, and (alleged) stalker of Ariel Helwani.

Stephen Schlegel – (Making his valiant return) MMA Writer for UltimateSportstalk.com, and all-around Sports Nut.

Larry Cassano, III – Boxing Columnist at UltimateSportsTalk.com, and Host of the #1 Rated, Highly Underappreciated, and GREATEST SHOW IN THE HISTORY OF INTERNET RADIO*, The Ultimate Fight Show.

Chris Bragg – Me, Myself, and I. I put this preview together, stalk MMA fighters and Pro Wrestlers on Twitter (@TheBraggMan), and Co-Host the #1 Rated, Highly Underappreciated, and GREATEST SHOW IN THE HISTORY OF INTERNET RADIO*, The Ultimate Fight Show.

*The claims made above about The Ultimate Fight Show do indeed represent the thoughts and opinions of UltmateSportsTalk.com, the participants of this Roundtable Preview, and the rest of the free World.

On to the picks!

Ed Herman vs. Kyle Noke

Joshua – Kyle Noke by Decision

Stephen – Herman via 3rd Round TKO

Larry – Ed Herman

Chris – I look for “Short Fuse” to win this one with a TKO.

Joseph Benavidez vs. Eddie Wineland

Joshua – Eddie Wineland by Decision

Stepehen – Benavidez via Unanimous Decision

Larry – Joseph Benavidez

Chris – I’m a big fan of Wineland, and he is always game for a tough scrap. But Benazidez is the superior fighter, one of the top Bantamweights in the world, and he will win a Decision.

C.B. Dollaway vs. Jared Hamman

Joshua – CB Dollaway by 1st Round Submission

Stephen – Dollaway via 1st Round TKO

Larry – CB Dollaway

Chris – C.B. showed a lot of promise coming out of The Ultimate Fighter, but I can’t say that I have been overly impressed with him. He’s the favorite here, but I’ll take Hamman with the upset KO.

Duane Ludwig vs. Amir Sadollah

Joshua – Sadollah by Decision

Stephen – Sadollah via Unanimous Decision

Larry – Amir Sadollah

Chris – Ludwig has been very inconsistent lately (2-3 in his last five fights), and I expect Sadollah to
continue his impressive run. Amir by Decision.

Donald Cerrone vs. Charles Oliveira

Joshua – Cerrone by 2nd Round KO

Stephen – Cerrone via 2nd Round Submission

Larry – Donald Cerrone

Chris – This fight has fans excited, and it should. Two of the most exciting fighters in the business should bring the goods in what could be a Fight of the Year candidate. I’ve got “Cowboy” Cerrone winning a close Decision.

Ben Henderson vs. Jim Miller

Joshua – Jim Miller by Decision

Stephen – Henderson via Unanimous Decision

Larry – Jim Miller

Chris – I mentioned how great I think the Cerrone/Oliveira fight is going to be, but I am personally looking forward to this fight the most. With a win, Jim Miller sets himself up for a Lightweight Title shot. Ben Henderson, who very well may be a contender with a few more wins, could spoil everything for Miller. I don’t think so. Jim Miller wins a Decision.

Dan Hardy vs. Chris Lytle

Joshua – Dan Hardy by 3rd Round KO

Stephen – Chris Lytle via 2nd Round Submission

Larry – Dan Hardy

Chris – While not great, Chris Lytle’s wrestling is good enough to take down and control the Brit. Hardy has been working a lot with Roy Nelson on his wrestling defense, but I don’t think it will be enough. Chris Lytle by Decision.

Let’s look at the favorites one more time:

Ed Herman 3-1

Joseph Benavidez 3-1

C.B. Dollaway 3-1

Amir Sadollah 4-0

Donald Cerrone 4-0

Jim Miller 3-1

Dan Hardy/Chris Lytle 2-2

Well, those are our picks. What are yours?

I apologize for abbreviated nature of this article, but time has not permitted me to write up a full review of UFC 133. It was a really good show, and I recommend checking it out if you haven’t already.

Larry Cassano was the big winner of The Roundtable, winning the Tie-Breaker over Joshua Heizer. The final scores are as follows:

Larry Cassano 4-1 WINNER
Joshua Heizer 4-1
Jenny Bragg 3-2
Frank Kline 3-2
Isaac Castillo 3-2
Chris Bragg 3-2
Brian Willey 1-4

Again, I apologize for not putting out a full review, and I hope you will check back in on Friday for The Roundtable Preview of UFC on Versus 5!

—————————————————————————————————————————————————-

When UFC 133 was officially announced several months ago, the Main Event was scheduled to be Jon Jones and Rashad Evans for the Light-Heavyweight Title. When Jones was forced to withdraw due to an injury, Phil Davis was tapped to face Rashad in a #1 Contender’s match-up. Less than a month ago, an unfortunate injury took Davis out of the fight. Lyoto Machida quickly accepted the fight (after Tito Ortiz declined), but then demanded a “significant” bonus.

This leads us back to Tito.

If I would have told the MMA fan just five weeks ago that Tito Ortiz was about to be on the doorstep of another UFC title run, I would have been ridiculed to the fullest extent. OK, maybe I still am ridiculed (but not for that prediction).

Coming off a career-saving victory over Ryan Bader at UFC 132, Ortiz changed his mind and accepted the fight against Evans. This is his golden opportunity to get on the fast-track back into the title picture, as well as to avenge the controversial draw between the two back at UFC 73.

Rashad Evans has had a title shot in the bank for over a year now, but various circumstances have prevented him from cashing it in. With a win over Ortiz this weekend, Rashad has been guaranteed the winner if next month’s Jon Jones/Rampage Jackson title fight.

On the other hand, Dana White has stated that, with a victory over Evans, Tito may still need to win one fight in order to claim a title shot of his own.

Needless to say, there is a lot riding on the Main Event.

The rest of the pay-per-view card is not a very sexy one on paper, but has the potential of being an extremely entertaining showcase of veterans trying to stay relevant, and young fighters looking to make a name for themselves.

The Roundtable this week is not that much different. Making their picks for UFC 133 are:

Joshua Heizer – MMA Senior Editor at UltimateSportsTalk.com, new father, and (alleged) stalker of Ariel Helwani.

Brian Willey – Owner/Operator of Effingham Computer Services, and inspiration for the “Kung-Fu Panda” movies.

Jenny Bragg – Wife, Mother, Elementary School Teacher, and Head Master of the Bragg Household.

Frank Kline – Department Manager at Lowe’s Home Improvement. If you need an appliance, he’s the man to see.

Isaac Castillo – Currently in Kuwait, sweating his ass off in the desert for the greater good.

Now, on to the picks…

Rory MacDonald vs. Mike Pyle

Joshua – MacDonald by Decision

Brian – Pyle via Submission

Jenny – Pyle by Decision

Frank – Rory MacDonald

Isaac – Mike Pyle

Larry – Rory MacDonald

Chris – I am just hoping to see Rory MacDonald attempt a German Suplex in this one (like he did against Nate Diaz at UFC 129). I’ve got Rory by Decision.

Constantinos Philippou vs. Jorge Rivera

Joshua – Philippou by 1st Round KO

Brian – Rivera by KO

Jenny – Rivera by KO

Frank – Jorge Rivera

Isaac – Jorge Rivera

Larry – Jorge Rivera

Chris – Philippou is a late replacement in this fight, and that could mean trouble for Jorge, but I will pick him to win this fight. 2nd Round TKO.

Brian Ebersole vs. Dennis Hallman

Joshua – Ebersole via 2nd Round KO

Brian – Hallman by Decision

Jenny – Ebersole by Decision

Frank – Dennis Hallman

Isaac – Brian Ebersole

Larry – Dennis Ebersole

Chris – Talk about veterans, these two guys have 129 fights between them! Brian Ebersole is coming off a big win against Chris Lytle, and is one of the most fun fighters to watch. I’ll take him by Decision (possible Fight of the Night).

Yoshihiro Akiyama vs. Vitor Belfort

Joshua – “Sexyama” by Decision

Brian – Belfort by KO

Jenny – Vitor Belfort by KO

Frank – Vitor Belfort

Isaac – Vitor Belfort

Larry – Vitor Belfort

Chris – This fight was promoted to the Co-Main Event slot after Antônio Rogério Nogueira and Rich Franklin was scrapped due to Little Nog’s injury. As much as I love Akyama, Belfort is looking for redemption after being KTFO’d by Anderson Silva in February, and I think he’ll get it here with a 1st Round KO. This would be Akyama’s third loss in a row, and could be the end of his UFC run.

MAIN EVENT
Rashad Evans vs. Tito Ortiz

Joshua – Evans by Decision

Brian – Tito by Decision

Jenny – Rashad Evans by KO

Frank – Rashad Evans

Isaac – Rashad Evans

Larry – Rashad Evans

Chris – Just to be clear, I have never been a Tito Ortiz fan. I am one of those guys that were ready to shovel my share of dirt on his career after UFC 132. But, I was wrong, and have now found myself on the “Bad Boy’s” bandwagon. I have a sneaking suspicion that Tito is going to pull this fight out via a Decision victory.

Let’s recap the favorites real quick:

Rory MacDonald 4-3
Jorge Rivera 6-1
Brian Ebersole 5-2
Vitor Belfort 6-1
Rashad Evans 5-2

Last night’s Strikeforce: Fedor vs. Henderson card provided MMA fans with two monumental events.

First, a new star in Women’s MMA was born, as Miesha Tate spectacularly submitted Marloes Coenen to win the Women’s Bantamweight Title in the 4th round. After trading rounds 1-3, Tate scored an early takedown in the fourth, was able to use her superior wrestling to position herself for an arm choke, and forced Coenen to tap. It was her first fight in almost a year (sidelined due to a knee injury), but Tate quickly banished any nerves and/or cage-rust she may have had.

Next up for Tate is expected to be #1 Contender Sarah Kaufman. This is exactly what the new Champ was wanting, as she will finally get the opportunity to avenge an earlier loss to Kaufman. Everything seems to be coming together for “Takedown” Tate, and it couldn’t be happening to a nicer girl.

The second major outcome of the night came from the Main Event, when Dan Henderson knocked out the once unbeatable Fedor Emelianenko in the first round. The two all-time greats came out swinging for the fences, and after a brief struggle against the cage, they began exchanging again. Hendo was momentarily rocked, even knocked down with Fedor reigning down bombs, when he scrambled into a position to throw a right uppercut that put “The Last Emperor” out. A couple of unanswered shots later and the fight was over…

OK, before we go any further, I want to address the stoppage. It WAS a good stoppage. Referee Herb Dean did an excellent job in judging the situation, and protecting the fighter from any further damage. Fedor was out, plain and simple. After getting hit with the uppercut, he went limp, and fell face first to the mat, as if he was Planking. All of a sudden, Emelianenko appeared to come to, and turned over in an attempt to defend himself and engage Henderson once again. It was too little too late, however, as Dean had already stepped in. Reports from the arena state, that even though Fedor initially seemed ready to continue, he was stumbling and struggling to stand immediately after the fight, further confirming that the correct call was made.

So, where does Fedor go from here? Who knows? His post fight comments did not indicate specific plans, but his demeanor seemed to suggest little desire to fight again soon. His commitment has come in to question the past three fights. Ironically, he is 0-3 in those fights. I don’t think it’s a coincidence, and I feel that Fedor’s days as a relevant fighter may be over. Fedor’s invincible aura is gone, and it’s going to take big win over a top heavyweight contender to begin to get it back. I just don’t know if he has it in him. We shall see.

On to the other big return this weekend, The Roundtable saw Yours Truly go 4-1 for the win! The full results are as follows:
