So we are a week into free agency. Next to the Draft, it is the most exciting part of the off-season. Some people might say it is more exciting than the Draft. I personally enjoy the Draft better. While free agency can be exciting, I get more excited to see the young future of my team.

But this free agency period has been quite fun. Unlike last year when we had a late start to free agency as well as an uncapped year, this free agency period has brought along some exciting surprises as well as some questionable contracts and decisions by teams. When you look at some of the money being thrown around, you have to wonder if these teams know exactly what they are doing. Of course, we have also had two of the biggest free agents ever in the NFL sign with new teams, Peyton Manning and Mario Williams.

So here we will take a look at the winners, the losers, and grade some of the contracts handed out thus far in free agency. While we are only a week into it, most of the big name guys are off the market. Now, teams will be looking to sign either depth players or fill holes on their roster with what is left of the free agent pool.

WINNERS
Chicago Bears: The Bears are winners, and they didn’t even make a splashy signing in free agency. Rather, they made a trade hours before free agency started. The Bears traded two third round picks to acquire Dolphins WR Brandon Marshall. That is a steal for Marshall. Yes, he has a run in with the law that may be the subject of a suspension by the NFL, but a one or two game suspension will be worth it in the long run. When you consider that the Dolphins had to trade two second round picks to get him, it is worth it. Marshall reunites with Jay Cutler from their Denver Bronco days. Cutler will finally be able to throw to a #1 WR, something he has never had in his time in Chicago.

The Bears did make a couple of good moves in free agency. They were rumored to be in the Mario Williams sweepstakes before the money got too high. The Bears did sign Jason Campbell to be there back-up QB. That is a very good move. Campbell could have waited and possibly signed on to be the starter in Miami. But he chose Chicago. Chicago could have used Campbell last year when Cutler went down with an injury. Campbell played well for Oakland last year before being injured himself, and is more than capable of filling in if Cutler went down with an injury. They also re-signed Cornerback Tim Jennings and signed special teamer Eric Weems. Weems and Hester returning kicks? That should scare NFL teams. The Bears definitely did enough to make sure they will not be afterthoughts this year in the NFC North, and may very well compete with the Detroit Lions and Chicago Bears for the Division crown.

Buffalo Bills: The Bills best work came before free agency started when they re-signed some of their own players. They re-signed Kicker Rian Lindell who has been very reliable for them kicking in what can be very bad weather conditions in Buffalo. They also re-signed WR Stevie Johnson to a five year deal worth $36.25 million over five years. Considering the money wide receivers were getting after free agency started, this is a great deal for Buffalo. Had Johnson hit the open market, he would have received much more money. Johnson and QB Ryan Fitzpatrick have a great relationship, so bringing him back was essential.

Then when free agency started, the Bills made the biggest splash in the opening hours when they brought in former Texans DE Mario Williams for a visit. Williams never left and stayed for two days before signing a 6 year, $96 million contract with $50 million guaranteed, the most ever for a defender. Is that a lot of money? Sure. But the Bills has been a franchise that most players often avoided. The city has a bad rap. But signing the best defensive free agent on the market changes the perception about Buffalo. And the Bills struggled to get to the quarterback last season, and Williams, along with DT Marcell Dareus and Kyle Williams, will be a disruptive force for the Bills front four. Mario Williams makes the Bills defense better by himself, and takes pressure off of a struggling secondary.

Denver Broncos: Congratulations to the Broncos for landing the biggest free agent out there in Peyton Manning. Manning is coming off a missed season due to neck surgery, but you have to believe that Peyton’s neck is healed. The Broncos signed him to a 5 year, $96 million contract. That is a good price for one of the best quarterbacks to ever play the game. Manning makes the Broncos the instant favorites to win the AFC West. If Manning is anything like his former self, the Broncos should have no problem taking the division. Manning has a decent running back in Willis McGahee as well as a good young WR in DeMarryius Thomas. You would have to think Dallas Clark would follow Peyton to Denver as well. The Broncos are taking a risk, but you have to think the team doctors did a thorough check and know Peyton is all systems go. While Tim Tebow was a nice story in Denver, he will never be the caliber QB Peyton Manning is.

LOSERS
Miami Dolphins: First the Dolphins were players for the Rams #2 pick to get Robert Griffin, but that failed. Then they had Peyton Manning in for a visit, but Peyton told them “Thanks but no thanks.” So the next logical choice was Matt Flynn. His former offensive coordinator, Joe Philbin, was the teams’ new coach. But the team reportedly low balled Flynn because of it and he went to Seattle. They had Alex Smith in, but he appears ready to go back to San Francisco. Finally, the Dolphins signed option 5: David Garrard. Garrard is coming off back surgery and missed the entire 2011 season.

Oh, and then Steelers Safety Ryan Clark said no one wants to play for this team. Apparently, GM Jeff Ireland isn’t thought highly of by players. I mean, when you ask someone how they feel about their mom being a ho, would do you expect? Then there is Owner Stephen Ross, who is all about the glitz and glamour and gets too involved in the decision making process. The Dolphins are a team spiraling downhill and fast. They traded Brandon Marshall and got back less then traded away for him. At least they re-signed NT Paul Soliai on defense, otherwise they could have been a mess on that side of the ball too. The Dolphins are staring at an empty stadium, last place in the AFC East, and potentially the 1st overall pick in the 2013 NFL Draft. Maybe this year they will finish the job and “Blow for Barkley.”

Washington Redskins: I know some people liked what Washington did, but I’m not one of them. Trading three 1st round picks for one quarterback? That is way too much for my liking. If Griffin doesn’t get this team a Super Bowl then it isn’t worth it. Mortgaging your future on one guy puts a lot of pressure on him right off the bat.

Then the Redskins were hit with a salary cap penalty for front loading contracts during last season’s uncapped year. They were penalized $15 million in cap space this year and the same amount next. So what do the Redskins do? Give WR Pierre Garcon a 5 year, $42.5 million contract with $21 million guaranteed. Garcon had a good year last year, but it was also in a contract year. And Garcon has never been the go to guy for the Colts. He always had Reggie Wayne and Dallas Clark, oh and Peyton Manning was his QB. That is a lot for Garcon. Then they re-sign DE Adam Carriker for $5 million a year when he can barely get to the QB, and they sign WR Josh Morgan when they already have a lot of Josh Morgan’s on the team: under-achieving WRs who have yet to break out. I don’t like how Washington spent their money this off-season.

Minnesota Vikings: The Vikings watched the Bears improve pretty well, and the Lions and Packers are still both really good teams. What did the Vikings do? They signed John Carlson, a tight end from Seattle who didn’t play all of last year, to a 5 year $25 million dollar contract. Tight End is the one position they didn’t need to fill considering they already have Kyle Rudolph. The Vikings will probably take Matt Kalil at #3 to fill their need at left tackle, but their defense is a major liability, especially in the secondary. The secondary was shredded last year and it isn’t going to get any better. Jared Allen can’t do everything on defense. Vikings fans are in for a very long season. At the end of it, they may wish the team would just move to Los Angeles.

The Jury Is Still Out
Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Signings: WR Vincent Jackson: 5 years, $55 million, $26 million guaranteed; G Carl Nicks: 5 years, $47.5 million; CB Eric Wright: 5 years, $37.5 million

Okay, first lets talk about the Eric Wright signing. What Da Hell??? Wright was constantly burned in coverage all year and he is given that much money? I know the Bucs had a lot of money to throw around, but they could have used it much better than that. Wright is not worth $7.5 million a year. Never.

Now onto the other two. To some people, those signings scream: “All about the money and not about winning.” Some people think that Nicks and Jackson are just cashing in and will loaf it. While history suggests that is possible, I don’t know if it will be true. At least not for Nicks. Carl Nicks has a lot to prove to New Orleans. He was upset the Saints never made him an offer and basically made him an afterthought after Drew Brees and Marques Colston. Nicks is possibly the best guard in the NFL, and he will be out to show the Saints that they missed out big time on not re-signing him.

Vincent Jackson, however, may be a different story. Jackson just comes off as different to me. I don’t know why, but I would expect Jackson’s numbers to decline each year he is with Tampa Bay, especially after they start losing. Even with these signings, I still think Tampa Bay is the 4th best team in the NFC South. They need some major upgrades on defense and there are three high powered offensive attacks in that division. If Jackson was about winning rather than money, he would have signed on with a contender, wanting to show San Diego what they were missing. But I think Jackson cashed in, and his stats will show that.

San Diego Chargers: Signed OLB Jarrett Johnson: 4 years, $19 million; Signed WR Robert Meachem: 4 years, $25.9 million; Signed WR Eddie Royal: 3 years, $13.5 million; Re-Signed C Nick Hardwick and T Jarred Gathier

The Chargers acted quickly to replace Vincent Jackson, but I’m pretty sure they over paid for Robert Meachem. Meachem has the skills but never stepped up into the #1 WR role in New Orleans. The Chargers paid a lot for a guy that they don’t even know can be their #1 WR. San Diego was sucked into paying a high price for Meachem because the market was set high for WRs early with the signing of Pierre Garcon. The Chargers also signed Eddie Royal, but his skills will be used primarily in the punt return game where the Chargers have struggled mightily the last few years.

Jarrett Johnson will be a steal if he can improve on his numbers from the Ravens. Johnson isn’t the best at getting to the quarterback. He struggled to do it even with Terrell Suggs and Ray Lewis in Baltimore. So having Shaun Philips across from him in San Diego won’t make much of a difference. But Johnson is good in coverage and effective at stopping the run, so if he can keep doing that in San Diego then it will be a big upgrade for them. The Chargers also got Johnson at a bargain.

So What’s Next?
-Where Does Tim Tebow Go?
Now that Peyton Manning is finally on a new team, the focus will turn to where Tim Tebow goes next. Where Tebow lands and what the price will be all depends on what other teams see him as. I don’t think the Broncos will get anything more than a 3rd round pick. There are very few teams that see Tebow as a starting QB. The 49ers already took themselves out of the running. Miami reportedly isn’t interested either. The obvious team would be the Jacksonville Jaguars. If the new owner is all about keeping the team in Jacksonville and selling tickets, bringing in Tebow would help that. Tebow alone would sell out that stadium every week. They could take the tarps off the upper deck. Do you really think Tebow is any worse than Blaine Gabbert? Gabbert showed nothing in his first year. Sure he was only a rookie, but most rookies show at least some promise. Gabbert didn’t. The Jags are apparently committed to him, but I don’t know why. The Packers might be interested according to Adam Schefter as Aaron Rodgers back-up. That’d be an interesting stop for him. But I think when it is all set and done, Tebow finds his way back home to Jacksonville, and the Jags don’t have to worry about blackouts ever again.

Looking Towards The Draft
Free Agency talk will die down in the next week or so. Once Tim Tebow gets traded, all of the focus will shift towards the Draft. The first two picks are set in stone, and the Vikings are likely to select OT Matt Kalil with the 3rd pick. After that it is anybody’s guess. There will be some trade talk heading into the Draft outside of Tebow. The Panthers have 3 quality running backs now that they signed Mike Tolbert. They are kind of stuck with DeAngelo Williams and his massive contract, so Jonathan Stewart is likely the odd man out. There will be other veteran players available as well. I don’t like that the Draft is now spread over 3 days, but the NFL is a business, and they are all about making the money.

There you have it. I didn’t talk about some stuff like the Randy Moss signing, which I like because Jim Harbaugh will keep him under control. Other signings as well. But I think I touched on most stuff.

Until Next Time,

And so here we are. The last of my off-season previews. For are last stop, we take a look at the division of the Super Bowl Champion New York Giants. The Giants played the best football in the last month of the regular season and rode that momentum to a great post-season and eventually a Super Bowl win. The Giants have a couple key free agents this off-season, but they should be geared up for another run. The Philadelphia Eagles were billed the “Dream Team” heading into the season, but they struggled early on and couldn’t come back late. The Dallas Cowboys? They had high hopes coming into the year, but two losses to the Giants in December kept them from making the Playoffs. And the Washington Redskins just traded away three 1st round Draft Picks for one player. This division usually gets the most talk from the national media because of the big time players in it, and they usually don’t disappoint when it comes to making buzz.

New York Giants

2011 Record: 9-7

I sang the praise of the Giants for the last month of the season. Other than that stinker at home against Washington, they played very well. I didn’t think, however, that the Giants would carry that momentum all the way to the Super Bowl. I thought the Packers would get the better of them. I thought the Giants could score an upset, but I didn’t think it would happen. But the Giants shut down the Packers offense, got some good breaks against San Francisco, and scored late again against the Patriots to win the Super Bowl. Eli Manning in the process cemented his claim as an elite quarterback in the NFL. The Giants defense is what stepped up towards the end of the season. Once the pass rush was finally healthy, they were difficult to stop. Jason Pierre-Paul grew into one of the best pass rushers in the league. If the core group of the Giants can stay together, then there is no reason to think a repeat isn’t possible.

Biggest Question: Can the Giants Repeat?

Segue! Eli Manning showed that he truly is the man to lead the Giants for the future. The pass rush is great as long as it stays healthy. But can this team repeat? Well, if they are, they are going to have to improve a few things. Among them is their 32nd ranked running attack during the regular season. The team released Brandon Jacobs, but they will need to find a quality back up somewhere because Ahmad Bradshaw can’t stay healthy. The healthy Giants pass rush helped cover up some of the flaws in the Giants secondary that need to be worked on, and they could also use a linebacker or two. Plus, the NFC will still be very strong next year with the Packers and Saints, as well as an improved Lions and 49ers team. The NFC is anybody’s game this season, and if the Giants want to repeat they can’t have any lulls mid-season like they can be prone to at times. The Giants are still my pick to win the division, but they will be challenged to win the Super Bowl again.

Top 3 Free Agents

1. Mario Manningham: Wide Receiver

Manningham struggled with a knee injury all last year, but once healthy he was a major part of the Giants offense, including three touchdown receptions in the post-season. But with Victor Cruz and Hakeem Nicks, and the money Manninggam will command, he will probably leave.

2. Terrell Thomas: Cornerback

Had Thomas not suffered a torn ACL, he would have been a great help to the Giants secondary woes. He should be healthy in time for the season. RE-SIGNED TUESDAY 3/13

3. Chase Blackburn: Linebacker

Blackburn filled in quite well at inside linebacker for the Giants last year and made a big interception in the Super Bowl. I don’t know if he can be the long term answer, but he is good depth at least.

Top 3 Needs

1. Offensive Line

Left Guard was a problem for the Giants last year, as well as injuries to both tackles. The Giants need improvements if they want to keep Eli Manning healthy.

2. Tight End

Jake Ballard was emerging as a target before suffering a knee injury in the Super Bowl. The Giants are already rumored to be interested in Dallas Clark.

3. Safety

Antrel Rolle was the weakest link in the Giants secondary. Somehow the Giants need to replace him.

The Giants are still the best team in this division. They have the best defense when healthy and have the best quarterback in the division. The Giants problem is that they can go through lulls where they lose to bad teams like they did to Washington last year. Everyone in the NFC will be out to beat the Giants next year, with revenge on the minds of the Packers and 49ers particularly. If the Giants can get a better run game going, they can win the NFC again. But with there being so much parity in the NFL nowadays, you have to think it is almost impossible for the Giants to repeat.

Philadelphia Eagles

2011 Record: 8-8

Ah, the “Dream Team.” That is the title this team inherited coming into the season. Unfortunately for the Eagles, they weren’t able to live up to those lofty expectations. They started the season with a Week One victory over the Rams, but lost four straight after that. The team was never able to get on the same page, and they finished with an 8-8 record. The problem the Eagles had is that they were a bunch of individuals that couldn’t come together as a team. Mike Vick also missed a few games. That has become the norm for Vick’s career. WR DeSean Jackson also had problems with coach Andy Reid. And the defense, while ranking in the Top 10, wasn’t as great as they were advertised. The secondary struggled early on. The Eagles have the talent to be a Playoff team, but it is all about them coming together as a unit.

Biggest Question: Is This Any Reid’s Last Season?

Andy Reid stayed on as Eagles coach this year. Even though the team had lofty expectations and didn’t live up to them, Reid was retained. But Reid faced heavy criticism last year. How could he not have a team with so much talent playing better? Why did he make the team’s offensive line coach the defensive coordinator? Reid’s play calling has also come into question this year. The Eagles played slightly better towards the end of the year, and the Eagles will have to carry over that momentum into the season. If the Eagles get off to another slow start, then Reid may find himself out of a job quickly. Reid isn’t a bad coach, but the Eagles are expecting great things with the team they have now and a bad season again could spell bad news for Andy Reid.

Top 3 Free Agents

1. DeSean Jackson: Wide Receiver

Jackson was franchised by the Eagles, but I still wouldn’t expect him in an Eagles jersey next year. He is too much of a distraction and still has lingering problems with Andy Reid. I expect the Eagles to trade him before the start of the season.

2. Evan Mathis: Guard

Mathis did not give up a single sack at his position last year. Mathis is one of the better interior lineman in the league and should re retained.

3. Derek Landri: Defensive Tackle

Landri stepped up last year and played very well coming off the bench. He can stuff the run and clog up the middle of the field.

Top 3 Needs

1. Linebacker

If you watched any Eagles games last year, you know that their linebackers were a huge joke. They couldn’t tackle or cover anyone in coverage. The Eagles need at least two new starters at this position.

2. Wide Receiver

Assuming the Eagles trade DeSean Jackson, they will need to add a number two WR. Jeremy Maclin can’t handle the load but himself, and Riley Cooper isn’t a #2 WR.

3. Cornerback

This was suppose to be the strong point of the team. But Asante Samuel probably won’t be back, and Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie doesn’t give his all at all times.

The Eagles have the talent to be one of the better teams in the league. The problem is, they play for themselves rather as a team. If the Eagles talent can come together as a unit this year, then there is no reason they can’t be a 10 win team this year. If Mike Vick can stay healthy all year, then the Eagles could compete for the division title. The Eagles need a couple improvements on defense, but the talent is there for this team to compete for a Playoff spot this year.

Dallas Cowboys

2011 Record: 8-8

Similar to the Eagles, the Cowboys had a good team last year and multiple opportunities to take control of the NFC East. But then they just do things that baffle your mind. Tony Romo played terrible in Week 1 against the Jets. Then they blew a huge lead against the Detroit Lions. They lost to the Eagles twice, and had the opportunity to take control of the division twice with wins against the Giants, but they lost both meetings. They also iced their own kicker in their loss to Arizona. The Cowboys finished the year losing four of their last five and missed out on the Playoffs again. The Cowboys may actually have more talent then the Eagles, but unlike the Eagles, they usually do something stupid to shoot themselves in the foot rather then let their egos get in the way. Tony Romo will come under fire at some point this year like he always does, and Jerry Jones will stick his nose where it doesn’t belong.

Biggest Question: How Much Longer Does Tony Romo Have?

There is no denying that Tony Romo is a good quarterback. But his Playoff record, or lack there of, is what his critics bring up the most. Since taking over as starter in 2006, Romo’s Playoff record is 1-3, and he has also missed the Playoffs three times, including the last two years. Romo’s leadership has come into question at times as well. Is Romo really the leader that can take the Cowboys to the Playoffs? There were whispers that the Cowboys may make a play for Peyton Manning, but the team publicly backed Tony Romo. But ho much longer does Romo have left as Cowboys starter? Romo has had numerous opportunities to get his team into the Playoffs but hasn’t. And the NFC East isn’t getting any easier. And who knows, by the time this year is over, Romo could be the 4th best quarterback in the division. If the Cowboys don’t make the Playoffs this year, they could start looking for Romo’s replacement.

1. Laurent Robinson: Wide Receiver

Robinson stepped up huge last year when Miles Austin went down with an injury. He may not be a #1 WR, but he could be a good #2 somewhere. The Cowboys probably won’t pay him the money he wants.

2. Tony Fiammetta: Fullback

Fiammetta was a huge part of the Cowboys running attack being successful last year. He did a good job opening up running lanes.

3. Anthony Spencer: Linebacker

Spencer has a ton of potential going forward, he just has to release all of it. He is much better then the six sacks he had last year. His franchise tag will probably keep him in Dallas.

Top 3 Needs

1. Cornerback

Part of the reason the Cowboys faltered late is because they couldn’t stop any kind of deep pass. Their cornerbacks were constantly beat in one-on-one coverage. Major upgrades are needed.

2. Interior Offensive Line

Phil Costa is a terrible center, and the guards aren’t the best either. If the team wants to keep Romo healthy, they will improve here.

3. Linebacker

If Anthony Spencer doesn’t like the franchise tag, or they can’t re-sign Bradie James, the Cowboys will need to get a few new starters.

The Cowboys will be under a ton of pressure to perform from their fans and front office this season. Again, just like the Eagles, if the team doesn’t get off to a good start, there could be a shake-up or two on the coaching staff or team. The Cowboys have the talent, but they play in a very tough division where a couple mental lapses could cost them valuable wins. Until the Cowboys go through a season without a mental lapse or two, I don’t know if they will get to the Playoffs.

Washington Redskins

2011 Record: 5-11

And then there is the Washington Redskins. They are like the red-headed step child of this division. They are usually the team willing to throw around the most money, but they never make the right moves doing it. Washington started the year 3-1, and Rex Grossman even said the team would win the NFC East. But the team went on to lose 10 of its last 12 games, played quarterback musical chairs, and struggled offensively in the process. Mike Shanahan and Company knew that they didn’t have the right quarterback on their roster, so they went out and traded the farm to get the Rams #2 pick. They swapped first round picks this year, gave up a 2nd round pick this year, and their first round pick the next two years to get the #2 pick this year. That is a lot to mortgage on one guy. But then, the Redskins found out Monday that they will lose $36 million in cap space, divided however they want over the next two years, because they front loaded contracts in last year’s uncapped year when they were told multiple times not too. What does that mean? Probably that the Redskins will be looking up from the division cellar for the next two years.

Biggest Question: Is Robert Griffin Worth It?

People will be asking this question all off-season. A team hasn’t given up that much to Draft a player since the New Orleans Saints gave up their entire 1999 Draft to trade up for Ricky Williams. Griffin is definitely a top prospect. Some scouts have him ranked higher than Andrew Luck. Griffin has great play making ability. He can move out of the pocket with his legs and still make an accurate throw 30 yards down field. Griffin is the kind of guy you can build an offense around. But all of that doesn’t translate to the NFL immediately. Not everyone is Cam Newton or Michael Vick. Griffin has some of the similar tools that those guys have, but it is all about how mentally prepared these guys are coming into the NFL. And who their surrounding cast is. The Redskins will be hard pressed to get big time free agents the next two years because of the cap mess they’ve created for themselves. Griffin will definitely be fun to watch, but I have a feeling he will struggle his first season with very limited weapons surrounding him. Long term, I don’t know if he will be worth 3 first round picks.

Top 3 Free Agents
1. London Fletcher: Linebacker
Fletcher is 37 years old but he is still a tackling machine and one guy that is pretty much universally liked by everyone in the league. He’s the team leader on defense and should be retained.

2. Laron Landry: Safety
If Landry could ever stay healthy he could turn into a good safety. But he hasn’t played a full season in the last two years.

3. Rocky McIntosh: Linebacker
McIntosh was not a good fit in the Redskins 3-4 scheme. He won’t be back.

Top 3 Needs
1. Quarterback
This will obviously be answered on Draft Day, unless Robert Griffin pulls an Eli Manning.

2. Wide Receiver
The problem Griffin will have in his first year is that he will have no one to throw to. Santana Moss isn’t a number one guy, and none of the young Redskins WR have proven anything. They were expected to make a play for Vincent Jackson before the salary cap sanctions.

3. Safety
Laron Landry is a free agent and O.J. Atogwe was cut. With a weak safety class, an upgrade will be tough to find.

With the recent salary cap sanctions, expect the Redskins to struggle again this year. I think they would have even if they didn’t face these sanctions. Not every QB can be like Cam Newton in their first year. While Griffin may still be good, he could also struggle. There is too much talent on every other team in this division for the Redskins to compete with. I would expect a 4th place finish again.

Well, there you have it folks. Free Agency starts today at 4. I will probably write something this weekend discussing all of the big time signings.

Until Next Time

After Week 3 this year it appeared that the AFC East may have a new dog on top. The Bills beat the Patriots for the first time since 2003. But the Bills faltered down the stretch, and the Patriots won the AFC East for the 8th time in nine years. The Patriots offense by the end of the year was a machine that couldn’t be stopped. They have a duel threat at tight end with Rob Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez and the always pesky Wes Welker at WR. The Jets took a step backward last year, failing to make the Playoffs for the first time under Rex Ryan. And there is dysfunction in the locker room. The Bills finally looked ready to make the Playoffs for the first time in a decade, but they faltered down the stretch. The Dolphins started the season 0-7 and appeared poised to draft Andrew Luck first overall, but they finished strong going 6-3 in their last nine games. This is a strong division that only appears to be going up with teams like the Bills and Dolphins getting stronger.

New England Patriots

2011 Record: 13-3

The Patriots were two different football teams on both side of the ball last year. The offense was its consistent good self. Tom Brady didn’t miss a beat last year. They ranked second in total offense. Brady threw for the second most touchdowns and most yards in his career. Rob Gronkowski set a tight end record with 17 touchdown receptions, and Wes Welker caught 122 passes. The offense was a typical New England offense. The defense, meanwhile, struggled all year. While the Patriots got constant pressure on the QB, they were also constantly torched in the secondary. The Patriots ranked 31st in total defense. That is not the trademark of a typical Bill Belichick team. If the Patriots did not have Tom Brady on offense then they would be a .500 team at best with that defense. Tom Brady and Bill Belichick had their chance to cement their legacy by winning another Super Bowl, but they let the Giants drive down the field on them and beat them for the second time in a Super Bowl. Now the Patriots have to get back to fixing their defense while trying to win one more Super Bowl to cement their legacy.

Biggest Question: Do The Patriots Need One More Super Bowl to Cement Their Legacy?

Man, I am really good at these segues aren’t I? Tom Brady and Bill Belichick already have 3 Super Bowl wins to their resume. That’s pretty good for a QB/Coach combo. But you know Brady and Bellicheck. They want more. They want to be remembered as the greatest QB/Coach combo of all time. And to them, that means winning another Super Bowl. They have the tools on offense to do so, but they have to improve their defense. Sooner or later, teams will find ways to stop Tom Brady. If you have a pass rush that can get to him, he won’t move around in the pocket. Brady is also 34 years old, so he doesn’t have too much time left to win another one. He has a lot of weapons on offense that will stretch defenders thin, and that will help them remain a favorite to win the Super Bowl every year. If the Patriots can’t win another Super Bowl this year, the time to win one for the Brady/Belichick combo may close.

Top 3 Free Agents

1. Wes Welker: Wide Receiver

Welker was given the franchise tag so I doubt he is going anywhere. Both sides want to work out a long term deal, and I expect Welker to finish his career as a Patriot. He is a great slot receiver and Brady’s favorite target.

2. Dan Koppen: Center

Koppen was a solid center for the Patriots this year before going down with a fractured fibula. I’m sure Brady will want his center back and the Patriots will appease him.

3a and 3b. Andre Carter and Mark Anderson: Defensive Ends

Both of these men had revival years under Bill Belichick. They each recorded 10 sacks. Both men will probably be seeking a raise after their performances this year. They fit well in a 4-3 scheme.

Top 3 Needs

1. Cornerback

The Patriots were constantly torched last year in the secondary. Sterling Moore played well in the Playoff, but can he be a solid compliment to Kyle Arrington?

2. Defensive End

If the Patriots can’t re-sign Carter and Anderson then they will have big holes to fill in their 4-3 scheme. It is tough to replace 20 sacks.

3. Safety

As well as cornerback, the Patriots will need another safety to play opposite Patrick Chung. They can’t keep getting burned on long pass plays.

As long as Tom Brady and Bill Belichick are around, this team will be contenders to win the AFC every year. The Patriots offense is only getting better with the addition of young tight ends Rob Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez. If the Patriots make some improvements to their defense via free agency, then there is no reason to think they won’t be the favorites to win the AFC again this year. But they have to win one more Super Bowl. It will cement the legacy of Tom Brady and Bill Belichick as the greatest dynasty of all time. Anything short of a Super Bowl win should be considered a failure for this team.

New York Jets

2011 Record: 8-8

By the time the season ended last year, the Jets were a dysfunctional mess. People were wondering if Mark Sanchez was the long term QB solution. Santonio Holmes was called out for essentially quitting on the team in the last game of the season and players were calling certain players selfish behind the scenes. All of that masks the Jets season. They were 8-5 and seemed destined for another run as a Wild Card team in the Playoffs. But the Jets lost three straight to close the season and missed the Playoffs for the first time under Rex Ryan. Now the Jets face the ultimate task of rebuilding their offense under new coordinator Tony Sparano. The Jets have some key free agents on offense and face the possibility of a down turn if things aren’t fixed behind the scenes quickly. The players will tell you everything is fine, but certain things linger with players and you can bet one wrong thing can cause someone to snap.

Biggest Question: Is Mark Sanchez the Future QB of the Jets?
There is no doubt that Mark Sanchez regressed last year. You could see it in the way he played. Sanchez wasn’t comfortable in the pocket and made some very questionable decisions throwing the ball. While Sanchez had a career high in touchdowns, it was partly because he threw way too much, and the Jets didn’t rely enough on their running game. Sanchez was one time thought of as the long term “Sanchize” quarterback for the Jets. Now people don’t even know if he will be the quarterback next season. With the release of Peyton Manning, the Jets are expected to be in hot pursuit despite support for Sanchez by his coach. If the Jets can’t land Manning, then Sanchez may have one more year to prove himself as the Jets QB. Another regression, and Sanchez is as good as gone.

Top 3 Free Agents
1. Sione Pouha: Nose Tackle
Pouha was a run stopping force up the middle for the Jets last season. He is going to be 33 years of age, but Pouha still showed last year he can be a dominating force up the middle.

2. Plaxico Burress: Wide Receiver
All Burress pretty much did last year was catch touchdown passes. He had eight total. But Burress lacks the same burst he once had years ago, and the Jets may part ways with him.

3. Aaron Maybin: Linebacker
Maybin looked lost in Buffalo, but he found new life with the Jets recording six sacks. Maybin seems to be a pass rushing specialist, that’s it.

Top 3 Needs
1. Wide Receiver
Santonio Holmes may not be brought back, and Plaxico Burress is a free agent. The Jets might need to replace both their starters during free agency. That could hurt Sanchez even more.

2. Quarterback
Even if the Jets decide to go with Mark Sanchez for another year, the Jets need to get a quality back-up in case Sanchez struggles so much that he needs to be benched.

3. Linebacker
Even though Maybin played well for the Jets, you don’t want him to be your leading sack getter. The Jets need an upgrade here.

There are lots of questions surrounding the Jets this off-season. If they can land Peyton Manning, then all of those questions will be resolved. But if they don’t, then the Jets might have to go through another year of Sanchez under center, and hope that he does not regress even further as a quarterback. The Jets need to solve their dysfunction in the locker room before they do anything. If the problems become too big, then they may cause the on field production to struggle, and that could result in a very long season for the J-E-T-S Jets Jets Jets.

Miami Dolphins

2011 Record: 6-10

The Dolphins started the season 0-7 and appeared to be headed for the #1 overall pick in April’s Draft. Fans appeared ready and excited at the prospect of Andrew Luck as the team’s quarterback of the future. Well, everyone forgot to tell the Dolphins players that. The team went on to win 6 of their last 9 games to finish the season 6-10 and having to settle with the #8 pick in the Draft. Coach Tony Sparano still lost his job late in the season, and he was replaced by Packers offensive coordinator Joe Philbin. Dolphins Owner Stephen Ross is all about the glitz and glamour, so you can bet he will make a hard push for Peyton Manning the second he is released. But you almost have to wonder if new coach Joe Philbin would like to bring in Matt Flynn, a quarterback he worked with in Green Bay. Another thing to remember is that the Dolphins will be switching to a 3-4 scheme on defense this season. They already have some parts for it, but some of them are free agents that need to be re-signed.

Biggest Question: Who Is Under Center Week One?
Despite not wowing anybody, Matt Moore had a pretty decent season last year once he became starter. But he isn’t a long term solution for the Dolphins. Moore may stick around as a back-up, but there will be someone different under center Week 1. Peyton Manning will more than likely be priority 1, 2, and 3 for the Dolphins this off-season. As I said, owner Stephen Ross is all about making news. Manning would make the Dolphins Playoff contenders, but I would still give the Patriots the edge in the division. We have no idea how Manning will play returning from multiple injuries. Even if he does play well, you still only have two, maybe three years left with him. The better long term answer might be Matt Flynn. Flynn knows Joe Philbin’s offense and would fit in right away with the team. They could trade up for Robert Griffin, but that seems like the last option. I would put the Dolphins as the front runners for Manning’s services.

Top 3 Free Agents
1. Paul Soliai: Nose Tackle
Soliai’s stats won’t wow you, but he is a tremendous run stuffer for the Dolphins. He can fit in the middle of the Dolphins 3-4 look and do the same. He must be retained.

2. Kendall Langford: Defensive End
Just like Soliai, Langford’s stats won’t wow you but he can stuff the run and put pressure on the quarterback. He’s a good five technique fit in the Dolphins 3-4 scheme.

3. Vernon Carey: Guard
Carey played well at guard for the Dolphins and did not give up too many sacks. He can open up run lanes as well.

Top 3 Needs
1. Quarterback
Matt Moore will win games and play serviceable, but he isn’t the team’s future at the position.

2. Linebacker
Cameron Wake should be able to transition well to outside linebacker, but the Dolphins will need someone else to play opposite and get to the quarterback.

3. Right Tackle
Marc Colombo was atrocious last year. He couldn’t pass or run block. He needs to be replaced, and the Dolphins could do that with their #8 pick.

If the Dolphins are able to land Peyton Manning, then they become an instant Playoff contender. I don’t think he makes them Super Bowl threats because we don’t know how well Manning will play. He still needs a solid running game and offensive line around him. The Dolphins also need to transition well into the 3-4 defense. If the Dolphins can fill in the missing pieces, they may challenge for a Playoff spot even without Manning. The Dolphins showed some promise late last year, and they hope to continue it under a new coach this year.

Buffalo Bills

2011 Record: 6-10

The Bills were an exciting team to watch in the first half of the season last year. They came back from down 18 at the half to beat the Raiders, and were down 21-0 to the Patriots in Week 3 before winning on a last second field goal. The Bills were 5-2 after their Week 8 win against Washington, but things went down from there. Injuries decimated the team. Ryan Fitzpatrick suffered a rib injury in the Washington game that affected his play the rest of the season. Fred Jackson, Guard Eric Wood, Tackle Demetrius Bell, Defensive Tackle Kyle Williams and Linebacker Shawne Merriman were all lost to season ending injuries. The Bills struggled in the second half on both sides of the ball. They showed their potential when healthy, but the team still needs to make some talent improvements on both sides of the ball if they want to compete for the AFC East Title.

Biggest Question: How Close Is This Bills Team to Ending Their Playoff Drought?
Being from Buffalo and living here my whole life, I can tell you that hopes were high after the wins against New England and Philadelphia. Needless to say, just like every other Bills season, things took a down turn quickly. But we didn’t know that Ryan Fitzpatrick was hiding a rib injury. And the rash of injuries the Bills had are a rarity to see. The offense should its potential last year. When Fred Jackson went down with an injury, C.J. Spiller stepped up and showed that he could handle the duties of a #1 back. The Bills re-signed Stevie Johnson which was badly needed. The offensive line was one of the most underrated units in the NFL. Improvements, however, are needed on defense. The Bills need two pass rushers. They were awful getting to the QB. With the Bills switching to a 4-3 defense, they already have a great combo of Kyle Williams and Marcel Dareus up the middle. If the Bills add some pieces on defense, and a second wide receiver, they could challenge for a Playoff spot this year.

Top 3 Free Agents
1. Demetrius Bell: Tackle
The Bills re-signed Stevie Johnson, Rian Lindell and Scott Chandler. So Bell tops this list. Bell played well in six games last year, only giving up one sack before suffering a shoulder injury. Bell has shown potential, but his price tag may be too high and the Bills could Draft his replacement.

2. Kraig Urbik: Guard
Urbik was considered the weak point of the Bills line headed into the season, but he didn’t give up a single sack the whole year. Urbik could be decent depth.

3. Chad Rinehart: Guard
Rinehart started as a reserve but filled in well when injuries caused a shuffling up front. Rinehart is still a young talent and should be retained.

Top 3 Needs
1. Defensive End/Pass Rusher
The Bills are switching to a 4-3, so the pass rushing will come from the defensive end spots. The Bills could use two of them. There will be plenty of options at the #10 pick.

2. Wide Receiver
The Bills don’t have a solid compliment to Stevie Johnson. They should look to add one during free agency. There will be solid veteran guys available.

3. Cornerback
Terrence McGee can’t stay healthy, Drayton Florence was average at best last year, and former first round pick Leodis McKelvin hasn’t lived up to potential. 2010 2nd round pick Aaron Williams look to be a starter next year, but the Bills may need another one.

The Bills are a team that are a couple of pieces away from being playoff threats. Chan Gailey has turned the offensive into a formidable threat. If the defense can improve by switching to a 4-3 look, then the Bills will challenge for a Playoff spot this season. They have to be hoping that Peyton Manning doesn’t land in the AFC East. It might be homerism, but I think the Bills are a Playoff team either this year or next.

Seven down, one to go. NFC East Preview this weekend.

Until Next Time,

The NFC North was dominated by the Green Bay Packers last year. They were undefeated for most of the year and looked unstoppable at times. They ended up losing to the Chiefs, then were taken out at home by the Giants in the NFC Divisional Round. The Lions took a big step last year and made their first Playoff appearance in a decade. The offense was finally all systems go with a healthy Matthew Stafford and Calvin Johnson. The Bears struggled on offense and couldn’t make it into the Playoffs after winning the division in 2010. And the Vikings had one of their worst seasons in recent memory and still appear to be the 4th best team inside the division. This is still a pretty strong division. The Packers, Lions, and Bears can all make the Playoffs, and with some improvements on defense, the Lions could challenge the Packers for the division title this year.

Green Bay Packers

2011 Record: 15-1

Throughout the entire 2011 season the Packers looked like favorites to repeat as Super Bowl Champions. They were rolling over opponents before the Chiefs finally found a way to shut them down. Then in the Playoffs a few things were exposed: The Packers lack of a running game and bad secondary. The Giants were able to take advantage of that and knock out the Packers in Lambeau. The Packers offense was a juggernaut last season. They were ranked third in total offense. The defense, however, was ranked dead last in the league. That needs to be improved on if the Packers want to be Super Bowl threats again this year. The Packers are a Playoff team, but improvements on defense will be needed so the offense can avoid being in shootouts all year and carry the burden of winning games all year.

Biggest Question: Can the Packers Offense Keep Up Its Pace?

The Packers shot themselves in the foot against the Giants in the Playoffs. Constant drops, miscues and turnovers doomed them in that game. You have to wonder if that bad performance will linger into this season. Sooner or later, defenses will catch on to what the Packers are doing. That means they can’t let turnovers kill them like they did in the NFC Divisional Round game. But offenses usually can’t keep up the same pace that they had from the season before. The Packers had to put up points to bail out their defense, but if teams can start to get pressure on Aaron Rodgers, like the Giants did, then it will be tough for them to put up the same numbers that did last year. The Packers offense will still be good, but they can’t let miscues in the Playoffs effect them mentally this year.

Top 3 Free Agents

1. Scott Wells: Center

Wells was one of the steady pieces of an otherwise shaky Packers offensive line this past year. I’m sure Aaron Rodgers would not be happy if his Center left. Expect him to be retained.

2. Matt Flynn: Quarterback

Flynn put up a Packers record 480 yards in one game against the Lions last year. He won’t be coming back as a back-up. Flynn will start somewhere next year. People are basing all of this off of one game, but he showed enough qualities you look for in a starter to warrant the opportunity.

3. Erik Walden: Linebacker

Walden is an okay 3-4 OLB but he only contributed three sacks last season. He’s serviceable, but the Packers will probably look for an upgrade here.

Top 3 Needs

1. Outside Linebacker

Part of the problems the Packers pass defense has is that they suffer because no one can put pressure on the QB. Clay Matthews lead the Packers with six stacks, but he needs help opposite of him.

2. Secondary

Despite the lack of pass rush, the Packers still need help in the secondary. Charles Woodson is turning 36 and may be converted to safety. Safety Nick Collins suffered a scary neck injury last year. Improvements are needed.

3. Running Back

A decent running game can do wonders for an offense. The Packers will always be a pass first offense, but a better running game will help them. Ryan Grant is a free agent but he doesn’t have much left. James Starks is at best a second option. A good starter is needed here.

Despite struggles in certain areas, the Packers are still a very talented football team. Aaron Rodgers is an elite QB who can make a mediocre team great because of his talents. The defense needs to be improved in order for the Packers to remain an elite team. The Packers will make the Playoffs but they will have competition in the division this year with the Lions still improving. How good the Packers are this year depends on the defensive improvements as well as their mental stability after their poor showing in the Playoffs.

Detroit Lions

2011 Record: 10-6

The Lions finally made the stride that everyone thought they could make last year. After a decade of futility, the Lions finally made the Playoffs. Their young group of core players finally stayed healthy. Calvin Johnson turned into a a beast at WR, and Matthew Stafford finally stayed healthy and showed the potential everyone knew he had when drafted #1 overall. The Lions shot themselves in the foot, however. Had they beaten the Packers reserves in Week 17, I think they had a legitimate shot to beat the Giants in New York. Sure they lead the Saints at the half, but they couldn’t stop them at all in the second half. While Lions fans were happy with the teams Playoff appearance last year, they will expect better things this year. While they may not be Super Bowl contenders, they should be expected to compete for the Division Title.

Biggest Question: What Do The Lions Need to Top the Packers in the NFC North?

The Lions fans, players and staff will expect the Lions to take a big step forward this year. Just like the Packers, the Lions have a very good offense when healthy. The Lions also have the advantage of having the best WR in the NFL today in Calvin Johnson. I would argue that Johnson could be the best WR since Jerry Rice. The Lions will need to improve their offensive line, specifically upgrade at left tackle. They also need a steady force in the backfield. Jahvid Best has concussion issues, Kevin Smith is more of a journeyman then a starter, and Mikel Leshoure is coming back from a torn Achilles. On defense they will need to improve a secondary that was torched on a regular basis last year. The Lions ranked in the bottom third of the league against the pass. If the Lions improve those aspects of their team, and stay healthy, then there is no reason they couldn’t compete with the Packers. The Lions are a good, young team that will only get better.

Top 3 Free Agents

1. Stephen Tulloch: Linebacker

While Cliff Avril will demand the most attention on the open market, Tulloch is just as important to the Lions. The Lions signed him to a 1 year, $3.25 million deal last off-season. They won’t be that lucky this off-season. Tulloch is 27 and proved he can be a great team leader at the MLB spot in a 4-3 scheme.

2. Cliff Avril: Defensive End

Avril was franchised on Monday, meaning that any team that wants him would have two give up two first round picks to get him. Avril had a breakout year, gaining 11 sacks and forcing 6 fumbles. He won’t be happy about the franchise tag and might hold out if a long term deal isn’t reached.

3. DeAndre Levy: Linebacker

If the Lions can’t re-sign Tulloch, then Levy might be able to fill in as starter. Despite struggling at weakside linebacker last year, he still finished second on the team in tackles. He’s better at the inside position.

Top 3 Needs

1. Left Tackle

Jeff Backus is a free agent and the Lions have been looking to replace him for a while. He was guilty of seven sacks and 11 penalties last year. The Lions need a replacement at the position, and they should look to Draft one in the first round of the Draft this year.

2. Cornerback

If the Lions want to get better in the secondary, then they need to find someone to play opposite Chris Houston. It will help them shut down the Packers offense.

3. Safety

Cornerback is the bigger need, but safety is just as big a one as well. Amari Spievey was awful all year and he needs to be replaced.

The Lions are a team that won’t be going away any time soon. They are young and have a lot of talent on both sides of the ball. The Stafford-Johnson connection will be one of the better ones, if not the best in the league for years to come. The Lions have good front seven that they need to keep together. As long as Ndamukong Suh doesn’t lose his mind again then the Lions will be fine there. The Lions should be a Playoff team again this year and I think they will be competing for the NFC North Title, and if they can make a few key improvements, may be my pre-season pick over the Packers.

Chicago Bears

2011 Record: 8-8

The Bears came into last season with some question marks. Jay Cutler left the NFC Championship Game the year before with a knee injury that many people questioned the severity of. Then last year while on a potential Playoff run, Jay Cutler was lost to a broken thumb and Matt Forte was lost to a knee injury. Losing their two key offensive components, the Bears missed out on the Playoffs last year. The Bears fired offensive coordinator Mike Martz. Oh wait, he “resigned.” The Bears now have to deal with the fact that the Lions passed them in the NFC North and they are now the number three team in that division. The Bears are also an aging team, especially on defense. The Bears need to improve their offense so they can keep up with those of the Packers and Lions in the same division.

Biggest Question: Can Jay Cutler Finally Keep His Head On Straight?

It seems like every year, something happens that makes Jay Cutler a story in the NFL. In the 2009 off-season, Cutler was rumored to be trade bait by new Broncos Coach Josh McDaniels. Cutler didn’t like that McDaniels mis-lead him about trade talks, then demanded a trade and was traded to Chicago. In the 2010 Playoffs, Cutler suffered an injury to his knee and did not return in the second half. Many people questioned the severity of Cutler’s injury as he was seen walking on the sidelines during the second half. Cutler was then rumored to have problems with offensive coordinator Mike Martz last season. A lot of Cutler’s problems has to do with the attitude he portrays. Cutler, at times, seems like a whiner. There is always something he either doesn’t agree with or complains about. Hopefully, Cutler can finally put together a complete year this year. The Bears opportunities are dwindling and there Playoff window is closing fast.

Top 3 Free Agents

1. Matt Forte: Running Back

Forte was recently franchise tagged by the Bears, but you know he would like to work out a long term deal. Otherwise, a holdout is almost guaranteed. Forte made it known last season he wanted a new contract. Forte is one of the best all around runners in the league and was on pace for a career year before his knee injury.

2. Israel Idonije: Defensive End

Idonije is a good run stuffer and does a good job getting to the QB, registering five sacks last season. He benefits from having Julius Peppers opposite him.

3. Tim Jennings: Cornerback

Jennings surrendered zero touchdowns in his time at cornerback last year. Despite his small size, Jennings is a valuable asset to the Bears secondary.

Top 3 Needs

1. Wide Receiver

Jay Cutler has never had a true #1 WR in his time with the Bears. Earl Bennett is his favorite target, enough said. Expect the Bears to make a play for Vincent Jackson.

2. Left Tackle

J’Marcus Webb started at left tackle for the Bears last year. He surrendered 12 sacks and 14 penalties last year. J’Marcus Webb will not be the teams starting left tackle this year.

3. Tight End

Mike Martz hated using tight ends in his offensive scheme, but they can be a valuable asset to an offense. The Bears may look to Draft one this April.

The Bears have had chances to make a run the last few years but something has always stopped them. Jay Cutler can be a good QB when he has his head on straight, and Matt Forte is one of the best running backs in the league. If Cutler can get a top notch WR to help him out, then the Bears offense may be able to keep pace with the Lions and Packers. The defense is getting up there in age, and Brian Urlacher is recovering from a torn MCL and PCL that he suffered in Week 17. This season may be the last chance this current Bears roster has at making a run in the Playoffs.

Minnesota Vikings

2011 Record: 3-13

The Vikings season was a lost cause after Week 4 last year. The team started 0-4, and even after their blowout win against Arizona nothing was looking up. Donovan McNabb was benched after the team’s Week 6 loss to the Bears. Christian Ponder took over for the Vikings and played adequately for a rookie, but he still has a ways to go. Part of the problem was that Ponder was under constant pressure because he played behind a poor offensive line. Oh, and now Ponder probably won’t have his safety net ready for the start of the 2012 season. Adrian Peterson suffered a torn ACL and MCL in Week 16. Percy Harvin, however, has emerged as a versatile weapon for the Vikings. By the end of the year, Harvin was catching passes and running out of the backfield. The Vikings defense also needs an upgrade, especially at the cornerback position. The Vikings are clearly the #4 team in this division, and they can expect another long season.

Biggest Question: Will Adrian Peterson Be the Same AP When He Returns?

When Adrian Peterson suffered a torn ACL and MCL in Week 16, many people questioned why Coach Leslie Frazier even played him in such a meaningless game. My answer to that is he is a professional football player. You don’t bench a star player just because your season is lost. He wants to play football, and that is what he is going to do. Injuries happen, and while this one may be costly, you can’t blame AP for wanting to play and Frazier for wanting to play him. But now, the Vikings have to wonder if Peterson will return to form this year. He probably won’t be ready for the start of the season. But will he even be the same running back? Running backs usually aren’t the same coming back from severe knee injuries. If that happens to AP, then the Vikings will lose their best player and be set back even more.

Top 3 Free Agents

1. E.J. Henderson: Linebacker

E.J. Henderson was a tackling machine last year. He was second on the team with 110 tackles. He is getting up there in age and injuries have plagued him, but he can still be an effective linebacker if healthy.

2. Erin Henderson: Linebacker

Erin Henderson is younger and showed a lot of potential last year at weakside linebacker. E.J. will be a better team leader, while Erin has more potential long term.

3. Letroy Guion: Defensive Tackle

Guion doesn’t really do anything too well, but he can is young and is a serviceable player right now who still has some upside.

Top 3 Needs

1. Left Tackle

Charlie Johnson was brought in as a free agent and he was basically a revolving door at left tackle. The Vikings are praying the Rams trade the #2 pick so they can draft Matt Kalil at #3.

2. Cornerback

Antoine Winfield is 35 years old and his skills are decreasing. Chris Cook is battling legal issues and Robert Griffin probably won’t be back. With the offenses the Packers and the Lions have, an upgrade is needed.

3. Wide Receiver

If AP isn’t back to form, the Percy Harvin is the Vikings only offensive weapon. The Vikings need more than Harvin. Justin Blackmon is an option at #3.

I wish I had good news for you Vikings fans, but 2012 has the makings of another last place year. Unless Christian Ponder makes huge strides, AP returns to form, and the Vikings secondary makes major improvements, the Vikings are bound for the basement cellar. I expect more than 3 wins, but this team is not better than their division rivals.

Only two more to go. Expect the AFC East up Thursday, and the NFC East up this weekend.

These are coming at a quicker pace with Free Agency coming soon. Today we look at the AFC North, which might have been the best division in all of football last year. They put three teams in the Playoffs last year. The Ravens and Steelers have been a model of consistency in recent years. They also have the best rivalry in all of football. Every time these two teams get together, you can expect a hard-hitting, smash mouth game of football. Both teams are getting up there in age, however, and may be on a slight decline. I still think both are Playoff teams, but they may not be as infallible as they once worth. The Bengals shocked everyone last year by finishing 10-6 and securing a Wild Card berth. They will only get better. And then there is the Cleveland Browns. Unless they trade up for Robert Griffin, they will be basement dwellers without a doubt. Hell, they probably will still be basement dwellers even with Griffin.

Baltimore Ravens

2011 Record: 12-4

The Ravens were a Lee Evans touchdown catch in the end zone away from going to the Super Bowl. Then, they were a Billy Cundiff chip shot away from tying the Patriots and going to overtime. Neither of those two things happened, however, and the Ravens failed to get to the Super Bowl again. This Ravens team has had their chances to get to the Super Bowl, but you have to wonder if their time has come and gone. I said all year that this Ravens team was full of veterans that knew this could be their last chance to get to the Super Bowl again, especially on defense. They are getting older on that side of the ball. On offense, the Ravens still have everything go through Ray Rice. He is the workhorse of that team. Joe Flacco has still yet to get the Ravens to the promised land. Flacco is entering a contract year and will want a raise, but if he can’t get the Ravens to the Super Bowl again, will they want to pay him that kind of money? This is still a Playoff team, but you have to wonder if the Ravens are the threat they once were.

Biggest Question: Is This The Last Chance for Joe Flacco?

Joe Flacco will be a free agent at the end of the 2012 season. He already has the support of Ravens owner Steve Bisciotti. But if Flacco commands top dollar from the Ravens, will they really be willing to anti up the money for him? Flacco has gotten to the post-season every year as a starter, but he has yet to get the Ravens to the Super Bowl during his tenure as starter. Flacco’s stats don’t jump out to you as a QB who should earn top dollar. His highest TD total in one year was 25. He can’t seem to get over the AFC Championship hump. Do the Ravens think Flacco is really worth $15 million per year? He doesn’t seem to get along with offensive coordinator Cam Cameron if you believe reports we heard during the year. Flacco might have one last chance to win over the Ravens, or they might think about adding another young QB in the Draft. They should definitely add a better veteran back up for Flacco this off-season.

Top 3 Free Agents

1. Ray Rice: Running Back

Rice was just franchised by the Ravens so he isn’t going anywhere, but you would think Rice would like to work out a long term deal before the season starts. Rice is a phenomenal back who has break away speed and is very tough to tackle. Rice might be the #1 running back in the league as he is just as much a threat catching the ball out of the backfield as he is running it.

2. Lardarius Webb: Cornerback

Webb might be the best cover corner in the league. Teams completed only 54% of the passes thrown his way. Not only that, but Webb had 7 interceptions on the year, and only 2 TDs thrown against him. On a defense that is up there in age, retaining ite 25 year old Webb is essential.

3. Ben Grubbs: Guard

Despite dealing with a turf toe injury during the 2011 season, Grubbs is a very talented guard who is capable of opening up running lanes for Ray Rice. He’s a solid piece on the offensive line.

Top 3 Needs

1. Offensive Line

The Ravens may have multiple holes to fill on their offensive line. Grubbs is a free agent. Center Matt Birk is contemplating retirement, and Bryant McKinnie, while filling in well at LT, is not the long term solution at that spot. The Ravens should get younger and better here.

2. Outside Linebacker

Jarrett Johnson plays opposite Terrell Suggs in the Ravens 3-4 look, but he doesn’t get to the QB as well as Suggs does. Johnson is good at every other aspect of the game expect pass rushing. But he is also a free agent. The Ravens may look to add a better pass rusher opposite Suggs.

3. Wide Receiver

Baltimore already cut ties with Lee Evans and Anquan Boldin doesn’t seem to have the same burst of speed that he once had. The Ravens might need a better WR to play opposite Torrey Smith.

Last year I said that 2011 might be the Ravens last chance at winning the Super Bowl with the current roster that they have. I’m going to say the same thing again this year. Ed Reed and Ray Lewis probably know this again. But the season will once again rest on the arm of Joe Flacco. Flacco is a serviceable NFL QB, but he needs to step up his game this year if he wants to lead the Ravens to the Super Bowl. The Ravens are still a Playoff team but this may be their last shot to get to the Super Bowl with their current roster.

Pittsburgh Steelers

2011 Record: 12-4

The Steelers were typical Steelers last year. A tough, gritty football team built on their defense. Ben Roethlisberger did nothing fancy but is a great game manager and won’t do anything to cost you a football game. They were upset by the Denver Broncos in the Wild Card round of the Playoffs last year, and now all of the sudden there are a lot of questions surrounding this football team. The Steelers are way over the projected salary cap so they have had to cut ties with a lot of veteran players, including Hines Ward and Aaron Smith. Ben Roethlisberger restructured his contract for the second time in two years. And then there are questions surrounding Mike Wallace, who was only tendered and not franchised by the Steelers. In my opinion, there are too many questions surrounding this team for my liking. Could this be a team on the decline?

Biggest Question: Is This A Team On The Decline?

What a perfect lead in by myself into this portion of the Steelers right up. As I sad, the Steelers are at least $20 million over the projected salary cap and will have to let go of some veteran players. They already dumped Hines Ward and Aaron Smith. They also let go one of their top tacklers in linebacker James Farrior and starting guard Chris Kemoeatu. And all of their salary cap problems may cause them to lose their best player on offense in WR Mike Wallace. Wallace is a big play threat and deep down field speed. The Steelers only placed a first round tender on him. You don’t think a team like San Francisco or the Ravens, a team with a late first round pick, would be willing to sacrifice it for a game changer like Wallace. Pittsburgh has always been a model of consistency in the NFL, but you have to wonder if their salary cap issues will cause their on field production to slide this year.

Top 3 Free Agents

1. Mike Wallace: Wide Receiver

Can the Steelers really let Mike Wallace go? Wallace is such a game changer at WR that you think they would have to find a way to sign him. Wallace is too good to let go, and the Steelers offense becomes much less imposing without him on the field.

2. Ramon Foster: Guard

Foster is only a restricted free agent but also one of the team’s better pass blockers. With the way the Steelers offensive line is, losing one of your better pieces would not be a good thing.

3. William Gay: Cornerback

Gay played rather well when he was put into the starting line-up last year. He is a free agent and some team might over pay him, and the Steelers might be forced to let him walk because of it.

Top 3 Needs

1. Left Tackle

Starting LT Max Starks tore his ACL in the Playoff game against Denver and will probably not be ready for the start of the season. The Steelers need someone to protect Big Ben, otherwise he will inevitably be injured again at some point this year.

2. Nose Tackle

Casey Hampton is 35 years old, recovering from a torn ACL and probably a cap casualty at over $8 million dollars. Back-up Chis Hoke retired. The Steelers need to find someone to plug the middle up for them this year.

3. Cornerback

Bryant McFadden was cut, William Gay is a free agent, and Ike Taylor was embarrassed on the OT Touchdown catch against the Broncos. The Steelers might be looking for a starter or two.

The Steelers are looking at some major changes this off-season. A lot of the aging players on defense will be gone as they attempt to re-sign younger players like Mike Wallace. I don’t think the Steelers will improve at all this year, and I think they may actually miss the Playoffs this year. Could they miss the Playoffs? It’s possible. A lot depends on how other teams in the AFC improve. The Steelers are definitely a team in flux and changes may cause the on field product to struggle early on.

Cincinnati Bengals

2011 Record: 9-7

The Bengals surprised a lot of people last year. With a rookie QB under center from Week 1 and their best offensive weapon a rookie WR, most people expected a poor year from the Bengals. But to everyone’s surprise the Bengals played well, against the bad teams. They went 9-0 against teams that didn’t make the Playoffs. They lost all seven regular season games against Playoff teams: the Ravens and Steelers twice each, the 49ers, the Broncos and Texans. But the Bengals still made tremendous strides last year with Andy Dalton and A.J. Green and found their way into the Playoffs as a 6 seed. Cincinnati is so young that they will only get better. A.J. Green looked like a future stud at WR, and Dalton, while not being flashy, showed he can be a good game manager and not cost you any games. The defense was very good under Marvin Lewis. They finished the year ranked 7th in total defense. The Bengals should continue to improve this year, but they will also have to deal with a tougher schedule and higher expectations.

Biggest Question: Can the Bengals Avoid A Sophomore Slump?

The Bengals are a young team and had two rookies that had solid years this past year: Andy Dalton and A.J. Green. The problem is, rookies can have a tendency to have some sophomore slumps after they have a good rookie year. There’s a track record of all of this happening. It happened to Matt Ryan. It happened to Sam Bradford this past year. You can almost expect a slight dip in stats this year. The Bengals will have a tougher schedule. Instead of facing the NFC West and the AFC South, the Bengals will have to deal with the NFC East and AFC West. Those two divisions are tougher than their NFC counterparts. Plus the secret is now out on the Bengals. They won’t sneak up on anybody this year like they did last year. The one thing the Bengals will need to do is improve their running game so it can take pressure off of Dalton. Despite the youth, I still think the Bengals might finish better than the Steelers this year.

Top 3 Free Agents

1. Manny Lawson: Linebacker

Lawson played very well in the Bengals 4-3 scheme this year. He’s a solid run stuffer. He’s also a veteran leader, so re-signing him should be a priority.

2. Jonathan Fanene: Defensive Tackle

Fanene is a good run stuffing DT at 290 pounds, but he is also good at getting to the QB. Fanene had 6.5 sacks last year. Fanene is a force in the middle of the Bengals 4-3 scheme.

3. Bobbie Williams: Guard

Williams is 35 years old, but the Bengals offensive line missed him last year when he went on IR in December with a broken ankle. A one year deal might be appropriate.

Top 3 Needs

1. Running Back

Cedric Benson is a free agent but is highly unlikely to be re-signed. The Bengals need a running back that can take the pressure off of Dalton. Michael Bush perhaps?

2. Cornerback

Leon Hall was playing very well until he tore his Achilles last year. Those type of injuries have long recovery times. He may not play at all in 2012. The Bengals need to find a replacement for him.

3. Wide Receiver

Teams know A.J. Green is the Bengals guy, so the Bengals need to find a receiver to play opposite Green to take the pressure off of him.

The Bengals are a young team that will be out to prove that last year was no fluke. They don’t do anything flashy, but they get the job done. I expect the defense to remain a strong unit as long as they can retain some key free agents. If the Bengals can get an extra weapon or two on offense then they may be able to leap frog the Steelers this year in the AFC North. While the Steelers are aging and on the decline, the Bengals are young and improving. While they may experience a set back or two, their youth will still only help them get better. Are the Bengals a Playoff team this year? Maybe. But they need to get over the hump and show they can hang with the big boys of the NFL.

Cleveland Browns

2011 Record: 4-12

The Browns are like the red-headed step child of this division. Nobody takes them seriously, and no one thinks they have a chance to do anything. The Browns thought they had finally found their franchise quarterback when Colt McCoy played well in 2010. Well, McCoy took a huge step backwards under new coach Pat Shurmur this past season. McCoy looks to be a serviceable backup at best. Then the Browns had to deal with the controversy surrounding Peyton Hillis, who sat out games due to strep throat when he might have actually been able to play. All of that added up to the Browns only scoring 20 plus points TWICE last year. Those must have been tough games for the Dog Pound to watch. The defense played good, but they can’t score points on a regular basis. Pat Shurmur was brought in because he was suppose to fix the Browns offense, but he may have actually hurt it more than helped. It seems like they are back at phase one.

Biggest Question: What Will the Browns Do With the #4 Pick?

The Browns have been one of the rumored teams interested in trading up to the #2 spot for Robert Griffin. Most people think the Browns have the most ammunition. They have two first round picks in this year’s Draft. You would think that would interest the Rams most. But with a team that has as many needs as the Browns, do they want to surrender two first round picks for one QB? If they stayed at #4, they could grab either Justin Blackmon or Trent Richardson to help Colt McCoy. Or they could grab Richardson at #4, a receiver with their #22 pick and sign Matt Flynn in the off-season. The Browns aren’t going to get Peyton Manning, so it looks like it is either Flynn, Griffin, or another year of Colt McCoy. I don’t think the Browns will want to go through another season of Colt. If they think Griffin is a franchise changing QB, then I would trade both 1st rounders for him. If not, I would keep the pick and try to sign Matt Flynn.

Top 3 Free Agents

1. Mike Adams: Safety

Adams had a good year last year. He lead the team with 3 interceptions and was good in run support.

2. Peyton Hillis: Running Back

When healthy and mentally in check, Hillis is one of the toughest runners in the NFL. He can take down would be tacklers with ease. But with all the questions surrounding him, it is highly unlikely Hillis is brought back.

3. Phil Dawson: Kicker

Dawson has been reliable for the Browns as a kicker. He went 24 for 29 on field goals this year, including 7 of 8 from deep. He received the franchise tag from the Browns, so he will probably be back.

Top 3 Needs

1. Quarterback

Colt McCoy is a serviceable back up, but it doesn’t look like he is the long term answer for the Browns. They need new blood in their at QB.

2. Wide Receiver

Part of the problem is that the Browns don’t have any weapons on offense. At all. They don’t have a #1 WR on their roster, which is why Justin Blackmon is a possibility at #4.

3. Right Tackle

Tony Pashos surrendered seven sacks last year while starting at right tackle. If the Browns get a new QB, they will need to get him better protection.

The Browns still have a long way to go before they are competing for a Playoff spot. They don’t have any bright spots on their offense to speak of right now. When your team needs a QB, RB and WR that is not a good sign. The Browns might struggle to score points again this year, which means it will be on their defense to keep them in the game. Defenses can only last so long. Eventually the offense has to score points. Even with an upgrade at every position, expect the Browns to be no more than a 6 win team this year.

It is Part 4 of my NFL Off-Season Preview, and this time we will look at the NFC West. The West was a division that went the complete opposite way most people saw it going this year. Almost everyone saw the Rams as the favorites to win the division. They were a team on the rise. But a brutal early schedule and injuries put an end to that. The Seahawks struggled early, as did the Cardinals, and both teams’ late season runs weren’t enough to get them in the Playoffs. Then there was the San Francisco 49ers, a team that I am pretty sure no one saw coming. But first year coach Jim Harbaugh completely changed the culture of the team, and he lead the 49ers to the NFC West Title and the NFC Championship Game. All of this was done with pretty much the same roster that didn’t make the Playoffs the year before. What once was considered the weakest division in the NFL is now a decent one that is no longer a laughing stock.

San Francisco 49ers

2011 Record: 13-3

Okay, raise your hand if you saw the San Francisco 49ers coming last year. I could probably count the number of people who picked the 49ers to win the NFC West last year on my fingers and toes. What Jim Harbaugh did with last year’s team was truly phenomenal. Harbaugh built a great defense and resurrected the career of QB Alex Smith. Harbaugh’s fiery personality inspired his players. It was part of the reason I wanted Harbaugh as Bills coach when they were looking for one two years ago. The 49ers had the NFC Title Game in their hands if it wasn’t for two costly punt return fumbles. Throughout the course of the regular season, the 49ers beat the Steelers, Eagles, Lions and Giants. They took out the Saints in the Playoffs with a great offensive outing. The 49ers had the 4th ranked total defense in all of the NFL last year. They were number one against the run, giving up 246 less yards than the second ranked Ravens and only surrendering 3 rushing TDs all year. It looks like the 49ers may be back to their old winning ways under Harbaugh.

Biggest Question: Can the 49ers Do It Two Years In A Row?

Now while it looks like they may be back to their winning ways, it doesn’t mean the 49ers can’t regress this year. They will have a tougher schedule this year. They will have to play the Saints, Packers and Giants. While Alex Smith had somewhat of a resurgence under Harbaugh, his numbers still didn’t stand out or make it seem like he is going to improve. While Smith had a great Divisional Round game against the Saints, he struggled against the Giants in the NFC Championship. Smith needs more weapons other than TE Vernon Davis. Teams will begin to double team Davis if the 49ers can’t improve their WR situation. The defense, however, shows no signs of going away as all of its key components will be back. The 49ers have already re-signed OLB Ahmad Brooks and put the franchise tag on Safety Dashon Goldson. Brooks had 7 sacks last year and Goldosn tied for the team lead with 6 interceptions. In a still sub-par but improving NFC West, the 49ers Defense is far superior to any other defense in the division, and it keeps them as the favorites in the NFC West for this year.

Top 3 Free Agents

1. Carlos Rogers: Cornerback

Rogers was the teams best cover corner last year. He tied with Goldson with 6 interceptions and teams barely completed over 50% of the passes thrown Rogers way. Rogers will be 31 come the start of the 2012 season, but his skills clearly haven’t gone anywhere and won’t be anytime soon. Rogers should be re-signed so this 49ers defense continues to gel as a cohesive and dominant unit.

2. Alex Smith: Quarterback

Smith’s numbers improved under Harbaugh. Smith had 17 TDs and 5 interceptions. Those numbers aren’t wowing, but with a defense that held opponents to an average of 14 points a game, they don’t have to be. Smith will likely be retained and serve as the teams QB. But the 49ers may look to add a veteran backup for Smith. They also have Colin Kapernick, a 2010 draft choice, behind Smith.

3. Ted Ginn: Wide Receiver/Punt Returner

Ginn isn’t much of a receiver, but his value to the team was shown during the NFC Championship Game. I doubt there are two punt return fumbles if Ginn is back there instead of Kyle Williams. Ginn is an excellent return man and after the NFC Title Game debacle, he will most likely be returning.

Top 3 Needs

1. Wide Receiver

No Receiver had more than 4 TDs on the team last year. Tight End Vernon Davis lead the team with 6. The 49ers need bigger and better weapons for Smith to throw to on the outside. There are some decent options in the Draft, or they could go after Mike Wallace and surrender there late first round pick. For a team like the 49ers, that type of move won’t affect them.

2. Offensive Tackle

Alex Smith was sacked a surprising 44 times last year. The right side of the line is what needs the most work. Right Guard Adam Snyder is a free agent and probably won’t be back. Anthony Davis isn’t great at right tackle and could get moved to guard. The 49ers need better protection for Smith.

3. Cornerback

The 49ers aren’t really a team with too many glaring needs. But if Carlos Rogers isn’t re-signed then cornerback becomes what might be the only need on defense.

The 49ers don’t appear to be going away. They may not repeat last year’s success, but with pretty much everyone coming back on defense they will be a tough team to score on again this year. The schedule will get tougher, as will the NFC West, but the 49ers defense will be up to the challenge. The 49ers need to get some more weapons for Smith if they don’t want him to regress this season. San Francisco will be the favorites in the NFC West and I don’t know if any team will be able to challenge them for the top spot, barring a couple big moves from one of their divisional rivals.

Arizona Cardinals

2011 Record: 8-8

The Arizona Cardinals had two very different halves to their season last year. The Cardinals started the season 1-6, losing six in a row after winning in Week 1. The Cardinals finished the season strong, going 7-2 which included wins over Philadelphia, Dallas and San Francisco. Kevin Kolb was a disappointment this year for the Cardinals. He only played in nine games last year and went 3-6, throwing 9 touchdowns and 8 interceptions. John Skelton played better despite throwing more interceptions (14) then touchdowns (11). Bu Skelton had a knack for winning, going 5-2 and coming up clutch late in games. The Cardinals defense didn’t help matters either, severely under-performing after a couple key free agent signings. You have to figure Ken Wisenhunt will be on the hot seat this year and if the team under performs again he may find himself out of a job in 2013.

Biggest Question: Who is the Cardinals Starting QB Week 1?

This will be a big talking point during free agency and training camp. The Cardinals gave away a lot to get Kolb. They traded away cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie and a second round pick. But Kolb under-performed last year and John Skelton was much better. But is Skelton the actual answer in Arizona? I don’t think so. He has a knack for winning in the clutch but still hasn’t proven he can do it for a full 16 game schedule. The Cardinals have been one of the teams mentioned as possible suitors for Peyton Manning. Peyton had dinner with Larry Fitzgerald during Super Bowl week, and you can bet Fitzgerald was talking up Arizona to him. If the Cardinals landed Manning, they would become a dangerous team on offense with a Peyton to Fitz connection. They’d be even better if they landed Reggie Wayne too. I don’t know if the Cardinals would want to give up on Kolb so quickly, but if you have the opportunity to land Peyton Manning you don’t pass it up.

Top 3 Free Agents

1. Calais Campbell: Defensive End/Tackle

Campbell was just franchised by the Cardinals, so he is more than likely going nowhere. Campbell is one of the better, if not the best, defensive ends in the 3-4 scheme in the NFL. He lead the Cardinals with 8 sacks and is a force on the outside. Expect the Cardinals to work out a long term deal with him. He will only be 25 as well, which means there is a bright future ahead.

2. Richard Marshall: Cornerback

Marshall improved as the year went on. He lead the team on the year with 3 interceptions. In addition to playing corner, he also filled in at safety at times. Marshall should look to build on his 2011 campaign.

3. LaRod Stephens-Howling

Howling is a good kick returner and has some lightning speed. He may never be a feature back, but he is a decent change of pace back. He could fill in well when Beanie Wells inevitably gets injured this year.

Top 3 Needs

1. Wide Receiver

Eventually, teams might just start triple covering Larry Fitzgerald. The Cardinals need to get someone to help take the pressure off Fitzgerald. Notre Dame WR Michael Floyd might be available when the Cardinals pick in the Draft, or Reggie Wayne might come as a package deal if the Cardinals land Peyton Manning.

2. Linebacker

Stewart Bradley was signed this past off-season, but he turned out to be a major bust last season. You need some strong inside linebackers to be the leaders of your 3-4 defense, and the Cardinals are lacking that right now. The Cardinals could also use an outside linebacker too.

3. Offensive Line

Similar to the 49ers, the Cardinals right side of the line could use an upgrade. Right Tackle Levi Brown could be replaced, and right guard Rex Hadnot also did not play well. There will be options when the Cardinals pick in the first round.

If the Cardinals are able to land Peyton Manning then they become the favorites in the NFC West, even with the 49ers strong defense. Manning most likely means Reggie Wayne will come too, and that makes the Cardinals offense very dangerous. But the Cardinals will also need improved play from their defense, especially in the secondary. I think the Cardinals are a few pieces away from getting back to a Playoff contender, but landing Peyton Manning would make them an instant Playoff contender in the NFC.

Seattle Seahawks

2011 Record: 7-9

Seattle had a very mediocre season last year. The only thing that stood out the entire year was the performance of RB Marshawn Lynch. Lynch was a beast last year, scoring a touchdown in every game but two from Week 4 until the end of the season. Lynch had career highs in every category last year. But Seattle couldn’t do much otherwise on offense. Tavaris Jackson doesn’t appear to be the answer at QB. But the Seahawks might not be able to get a suitable replacement. The Seahawks defense played surprisingly well last year, finishing 9th overall in total defense. But they have a few key pieces that need to be re-signed on that unit. Seattle surprised people by upsetting the Saints in the Playoffs two seasons ago, but if they want to surprise people again they will need to find a leader on offense and more consistent play throughout the year.

Biggest Question: Who Is Seattle’s Quarterback Week 1?

Yes I just asked this question about the Cardinals, but Seattle faces just as bad a situation at QB as the Cardinals, maybe even worse. Actually not maybe, definitely worse. Tavaris Jackson will not take this team anywhere. He didn’t play terrible last year, but he just isn’t the type of QB that will take you far. He doesn’t have the mechanics or the instincts to be a Playoff caliber QB. Neither does Charlie Whitehurst. Seattle isn’t a suitor for Peyton Manning. They might make a play for Matt Flynn. I don’t know if they’ll trade up for Robert Griffin. If anything, they might hope Texas A&M QB Ryan Tannehill falls to them at their pick in the 1st round. Or if they can’t land a QB, maybe they will tank the season and try to land former Pete Carroll recruit Matt Barkley. Things don’t look too bright at the QB spot for Seattle. Unless they make a move, it will be another year of Tavaris Jackson.

Top 3 Free Agents

1. David Hawthorne: Linebacker

Hawthorne is a very good inside linebacker and the leader of the Seahawks defense. He lead the team with 115 tackles and at the age of 27 still has a bright future ahead of him. He should be a top priority for Seattle.

2. Marshawn Lynch: Running Back

Lynch had a career year last year and will be rewarded with a big contract, but if you are Seattle you have to worry about that. Could a big contract cause Lynch’s work ethic to decline and his production on the field to drop? Lynch has had character issues and off field problems before, so it could be a problem. But if Seattle wants a good running game to take pressure off of Tavaris Jackson, they will re-sign Lynch.

3. Red Bryant: Defensive End/Tackle

Bryant is a big run stuffer for Seattle and is capable of playing in both a 3-4 and a 4-3 look.

Top 3 Needs

1. Quarterback

I talked about it at length already, but the situation is bad in Seattle. Tavaris Jackson and Charlie Whitehurst are not the future in Seattle.

2. Defensive End

Charlie Clemons had 11 sacks, but no one else on Seattle was able to put constant pressure on the quarterback. Seattle needs a second pass rusher, and those will be available plenty in the Draft.

3. Linebacker

If Seattle can’t re-sign Hawthorne or Leroy Hill, they will have a major hole to fill at linebacker.

Things don’t look too bright in Seattle. San Francisco is the top dog, St. Louis could be turning things around, and Arizona is a Peyton Manning move away from being contenders again. Seattle doesn’t really have too much going for it. This could be a down year for Seattle coming up. Last place in the NFC West is a strong possibility barring some improvements at offense, specifically at QB. I don’t like Seattle’s chances to contend for a Playoff spot this year.

St. Louis Rams

2011 Record: 2-14

The Rams had high hopes heading into the 2011 season. They had a good young QB in Sam Bradford, a workhorse running back in Steven Jackson and a young defensive unit that could only get better. Well, the Rams were smacked with a big dose of reality last year. They started the season 0-6, but with teams like the Giants, Philadelphia, Green Bay and Baltimore on the schedule it wasn’t surprising. They somehow upset New Orleans in Week 8 for their first win, but the Rams would only win one more game after that. The Rams also had a large number of injuries last year that affected their play. I think by the end of the year they were signing people to play cornerback that they saw playing a pick up game in the streets. Sam Bradford missed some time because of injury, a result of having almost no decent starting offensive lineman. All of this cost coach Steve Spagnuolo his job, and the team brought in Jeff Fisher. Fisher doesn’t have a great Playoff track record, but he is one of the most well respected coaches in the league and will change the culture in St. Louis. The Rams can only get better, and they should with Fisher on board.

Biggest Question: What Will the Rams Do With the #2 Pick?

Once the Draft order became official, everyone thought it was a possibility that the Rams would trade out of that pick and someone would trade up for Baylor QB Robert Griffin. Reports started coming out last week that the Rams were shopping the pick, then Robert Griffin blew up at the Combine and then it became a certainty that Griffin would go #2 overall and that the Rams would trade out of the pick. The Rams have a variety of holes to fill and more picks would be helpful. The Rams are apparently looking for what the Chargers got when they traded down in the Eli Manning/Philip Rivers swap: a 1st this year and next, a 3rd round pick and a 5th round pick. The Browns probably have the most ammunition. They have two first rounders this year. Mike Shanahan needs to make a statement in Washington this year, so he may trade the farm for Griffin. Miami is a possibility, but I think Matt Flynn might join up with his former offensive coordinator in Miami. I’m sure the Rams will trade this pick. They have too many holes and the more picks, the better.

Top 3 Free Agents

1. Brandon Lloyd: Wide Receiver

Lloyd helped out Bradford last year and is possible of being a #1 wideout. The only problem is that Lloyd said he would like to follow Josh McDaniels wherever he goes, and McDaniels just happens to be in New England. Lloyd thrives with McDaniels, so I expect him to end up with the Pats.

2. Danny Amendola: Wide Receiver

Amendola tore his triceps in 2011 and missed mot of the season, but when healthy he is clearly Sam Bradford’s favorite receiver. Amendola is only a restricted free agent, so I expect him to be re-signed.

3. Donnie Jones: Punter

The Rams don’t have too many big free agents. I hate adding punters, but Jones was a valuable asset to the Rams last year. He was in the Top 10 in total punt yards and punts inside the 20. That’s important in the field position game.

Top 3 Needs

1. Offensive Tackle

If the Rams want Sam Bradford to make it through the season healthy, they need to get him better protection on the ends. Jason Smith has been a colossal bust and Roger Saffold isn’t the man you want protecting Bradford’s blind side. If they stay at #2, they will take USC Tackle Matt Kalil. If they trade out they have to add a tackle late in the first or early second, or in free agency.

2. Wide Receiver

Assuming the Rams lose Brandon Lloyd in free agency, this becomes another need. The good news is if the Rams make a trade with Cleveland, they can still get Kalil or Oklahoma St. WR Justin Blackmon at #4. That may be the best option to upgrade this position for the Rams.

3. Cornerback

The Rams had 10 cornerbacks put on injured reserve last year. Many people expect Titans CB Cortland Finnegan to end up with his old coach Jeff Fisher here. That would be an instant upgrade for the Rams. They need stability at this position.

I expect the Rams to improve and get back to where they were in 2010. This team, when healthy, isn’t a 2-14 team. They are about a .500 team that could be better if they improve in their areas of weakness. They had a string of bad luck this year with injuries and a brutal early season schedule. Of course, the Rams are now facing off field questions with defensive coordinator Gregg Williams and his supposed bounty system he had in all of his stops as head coach. But that should get resolved before the season, and the Rams should be a better team. Fisher should bring in some veteran help to this team, and the Rams will find their way back to being a respectable team in 2012.

I’m going to try and start to get these out sooner with Free Agency less than 10 days away. I expect my next two to be done on Monday and Tuesday.

Until Next Time,

With the NFL Scouting Combine under way and free agency getting close, NFL talk is heating up again. That brings us to Part 3 of our NFL Off-Season Preview. It is time to look at the AFC Tebow. Oh I’m sorry, I mean the AFC West. This division was a big pile of meh last year. The Broncos backed into the division title with an 8-8 record. Two teams fired their head coach while the Chargers retained Norv Turner to the dismay of their fan base. With the emergence of the 49ers in the NFC West, one could argue that this may be the worst division in the NFL. I think the AFC South may be a little worse, but if we are going to argue about that, why would you even continue reading? So lets get to the Preview!

Denver Broncos

2011 Record: 8-8

The Denver Broncos were the talk of the NFL last year. No, it wasn’t because of their team play. It was because of one man: Tim Tebow. Tebowmania took over the NFL last year to the point where it became almost impossible to watch any kind of ESPN or NFL Network show without getting sick of hearing Tebow’s name. Tebow isn’t the traditional type of QB the NFL is used to, but he always found ways to get the Broncos a win. Tebow lead the Steelers to an upset victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers in the Wild Card Playoff Round before being dismantled by the Patriots the next week. The Broncos need to get some pieces on offense to help Tebow. Their defense was decent all year with Von Miller and Elvis Dumervill getting to the QB on a regular basis, but it was torched in both meetings by the Patriots and need to get better in some spots, especially the secondary.

Biggest Question: Can Tebowmania Continue in 2012?

When Tim Tebow took over the starting QB reigns in Week 7 for the Broncos, most people thought it was a prelude to the Broncos tanking and getting in line for Andrew Luck. But to pretty much everyone’s surprise, Tebow continued to find ways to win and get the Broncos back in the Playoff hunt. Before losing their final three games of the season, the Broncos won seven out of eight with Tebow under center. His mechanics still need some work. He has a long throwing motion and his accuracy and arm strength are below average at best. Tebow is already working on that this off-season. John Elway says Tebow has earned the right to be the starter heading into training camp, but that the team also needs to bring in a QB or two to compete with Tebow. I still don’t think Tebow is the long term answer for the Broncos at QB. When teams figure him out, like they started to at the end of last year, he can’t work his magic. Despite Tebow’s success, you’d have to figure he will be on a short leash to start the year. If teams get to Tebow early and shut him down, the Broncos offense becomes almost non-existent.

Top 3 Free Agents

1. Matt Prater: Kicker

Just like the Jaguars and Broncos, teams that don’t get to the end zone often need to have a reliable kicker that can convert from deep. While Prater was only 19 of 25 this year, he was clutch from deep, going 3 for 4 including hitting a 59 yard field goal to tie the game against Chicago. Prater knows how to kick in the Mile High air and is a valuable asset to the Broncos.

2. Brodrick Bunkley: Defensive Tackle

Bunkley isn’t great at getting to the QB, but he is a decent run stuffer up the middle and makes it tough for teams to run on the Broncos inside because of that.

3. Joe Mays: Linebacker

Mays is a decent inside linebacker and was third on the team in tackles. But Mays can’t get to the QB either and could be replaced and the loss wouldn’t be too noticeable.

Top 3 Needs

1. Cornerback

Champ Bailey is still getting the job done, but he isn’t getting any younger. Andre Goodman struggled mightily last year. Both men were burned last year by the Patriots. The Broncos need an upgrade at this position and a healthy dose of young talent from the Draft may help.

2. Offensive Line

Tebow scrambled around a fair amount last year and was sacked 33 times in 11 starts. If Tebow wants to improve as a QB, he will need help from his offensive line. Tebow will need some better protection on his blind side.

3. Wide Receiver

As I said earlier, if Tebow is going to improve he is going to need some more weapons around him. While Demaryius Thomas stepped up last year, Tebow will need more than one WR to throw to and get open.

I really think the Broncos were just a flash in the pan team last year. No one saw Tebow coming, but now that team’s can prepare for him they will have a better game plan going into games. The Broncos pass rush will still get to the QB, but they will need to improve their secondary. But this division is in flux right now with no real clear cut favorite in it. If the Broncos get Tebow some better weapons and he improves his mechanics than the Broncos could be right there in the division hunt next year. But I don’t know if Tebow can repeat the success he had last year. I expect a slight drop off for the Broncos this year as the Broncos organization and fans start to question whether Tebow can be the QB of the future.

San Diego Chargers

2011 Record: 8-8

The Chargers season can pretty much be broken down into three seasons. Heading into the bye week they were 4-1. It looked like the Chargers were going to avoid their typical slow start under Norv Turner. After the bye week they lost six games in a row. Philip Rivers looked off and the defense had problems stopping people. The Chargers then closed the season out going 4-1 but just missed the Playoffs. Most people thought that it was finally the end of the line for Norv Turner, but they were wrong. Turner was retained because the Chargers felt they couldn’t get an upgrade at the coaching position. The Chargers still have a lot of good pieces on their team but they also have some key free agents that may not return. That could change the complexion of the Chargers, but I still think they have the most talent in the division.

Biggest Question: Was the Chargers Mid-Season Collapse A Sign of Things to Come?

Despite finally coming alive in the final five games of the season, the Charges six game losing streak in the middle of the year has to be a bit concerning. Norv Turner has always been a question mark as a coach, making questionable decisions at certain times. You would have to think that Turner is on a short leash this year. If the Chargers get out to a slow start again, will Turner get the axe? A lot of the problems for the Chargers was their inability to stay healthy. Antonio Gates is constantly hurt. Ryan Matthews has yet to play a full season. The Chargers need to stay healthy for a full season. But even if they do, can they continue to play well with the possibility of losing two very good pieces on offense?

Top 3 Free Agents

1. Vincent Jackson: Wide Receiver

Jackson is a big downfield target and has breakaway speed too. The Chargers are unlikely to use the franchise tag on him and it is likely that he will leave via free agency. The Chargers will miss Jackson’s breakaway speed and it could cause their offense to take a step back.

2. Nick Hardwick: Center

Hardwick is one of the best centers in the game and is the anchor of the team’s offensive line. Hardwick is only 30 years old, but he already talked about contemplating retirement this off-season. It may be a sign that his heart isn’t all into the game anymore.

3. Mike Tolbert: Running Back

Tolbert and Ryan Matthews made a great one-two punch in the backfield for San Diego. Tolbert was a great goal line back for San Diego, accounting for 8 touchdowns. Ryan Matthews has yet to stay healthy for a season, so losing a good back like Tolbert will be difficult for the Chargers to swallow.

Top 3 Needs

1. Linebacker

The Chargers struggled to get to the quarterback last year. Outside of Antwan Barnes, nobody on the team had more than four sacks. That caused the Chargers secondary to get burned repeatedly. The Chargers need to get to the QB if they don’t want to get into shootouts all year.

2. Cornerback

Despite the poor pass rushing not helping things, the Chargers secondary still needs some improvements this off-season. Quentin Jammer is getting old and has lost a step in his game.

3. Offensive Line

With Nick Hardwick contemplating retirement as well as Guard Kris Dielman, the Chargers might have some holes to fill on the offensive line. LT Marcus McNeill also has problems staying healthy. Philip Rivers needs to be protected.

If the Chargers can’t get some help in free agency, then they may struggle again this year. If they re-sign some key pieces on the offensive line and Mike Tolbert then this team may still be the best in the AFC West. But no matter what, the Chargers need to improve their defense if they want to be competitive this year. If they don’t do that then they will constantly be in shootouts, and that will not work if they lose Jackson and Tolbert this off-season.

Oakland Raiders

2011 Record: 8-8

The Raiders had a very tumultuous year last year. They lost their legendary owner Al Davis towards the start of the year. After that, the Raiders won at Houston and things looked to be heading up. But the team lost QB Jason Campbell and traded for Carson Palmer. The Raiders looked on the verge of a potential Playoff birth, but they let that slip away by losing four of their last five games. Many people questioned Hue Jackson’s decision making and his want for more of a role in the team’s personnel decisions. That lead to Jackson’s firing this off-season. Now the team has a new GM, Reggie McKenzie, and a new coach, former Broncos defensive coordinator Dennis Allen. The team will have a new philosophy and will be switching to a 3-4 defensive look, but the Raiders have no Draft picks in the first two rounds this year and will struggle to get new talent because of it.

Biggest Question: Can the Raiders Get Through The Season With No Off-Field Distractions?

It almost seems like every year their is some kind of distraction that the Raiders have to deal with off the field. This past year the team had to deal with Hue Jackson getting a hot head and wanting more power in the team’s decision making process. At the start of the 2009 season, the team had to deal with allegations that Tom Cable shoved a former coaching assistant and fractured his jaw. While Al Davis was one of the most legendary owners in the NFL, he always did something during the year that drew attention off the field. With a new GM and Coach, maybe the Raiders will finally be able to focus on the field this year with no distractions off it. There is a lot of talent on this team, especially on offense. The team can easily win the AFC West if they put everything together this year.

Top 3 Free Agents

1. Michael Bush: Running Back

Bush filled in very nicely this year for the injured Darren McFadden. Bush ran for just under a thousand yards and scored seven touchdowns. Bush will attract a lot of attention from teams in need of a number one running back. Bush would make a great one-two punch with McFadden and would give the Raiders a dynamic running attack, one that could run for 150 total yards every game.

2. Tyvon Branch: Safety

Branch is one of the better safeties in the NFL. He lead the Raiders with 109 tackles and is a good coverage safety. With the team already transitioning to a 3-4 defense, it can’t let one of the stable parts of their defense leave. Losing Branch would create a big hole in the Raiders secondary.

3. Marcel Reece: Fullback

If the Raiders don’t re-sign Michale Bush, they better re-sign Marcel Reece. Reece is one of the best fullbacks in the league. He can create holes for McFadden and Bush, and he can also catch passes out of the backfield if necessary. A good fullback can be a great asset to any offense.

Top 3 Needs

1. Nose Tackle

The Raiders don’t have a true nose tackle on their team for a switch to a 3-4 defense to work. There are plenty of options available in the Draft and Free Agency.

2. Cornerback

The Raiders already let go Stanford Routt this off-season, and he signed with the Chiefs. Lito Sheppard is also a free agent, and Chris Johnson probably won’t be back. The Raiders will need at least one, probably two cornerbacks if they want to have a good secondary this year.

3. Outside Linebacker

Kameron Wimbley can play one outside linebacker spot in the 3-4, but they don’t have anyone to play opposite of him. Having two good outside linebackers is very important to the success in a 3-4 defense.

The Raiders have a lot of talent on this team, they just need to find someone to put all the pieces together. The offense has a lot of talent and potentially two good running backs and a good young core of wide receivers. The transition to the 3-4 defense will be key here. If the Raiders struggle with it, then it could be a long season full of shootouts. If they are good, then the Raiders could be the favorites to win the division. If the talent holes are filled on defense with adequate 3-4 personnel, then the Raiders may be the favorites to win the AFC West.

Kansas City Chiefs

2011 Record: 7-9

The Chiefs went through a string of bad luck last year. They lost Safety Eric Berry in the first game for the rest of the season. Then Jamaal Charles went down in the next game with a torn ACL. They then lost Matt Cassel for the year to a broken finger. Todd Haley was fired after the team’s Week 14 loss to the Jets and was replaced by Romeo Crennel. In his first game on the job, Crennel lead the Chiefs to a 19-14 victory over the then undefeated Green Bay Packers. In the season finale, Crennel’s team held Tim Tebow and the Broncos to only 3 points. The players like Crennel, and that was enough to keep Crennel on the job as head coach. The Chiefs were a division winner in 2010, and they still have some of the same pieces they had from that run. A healthy Chiefs team is full of a lot of talent, and can easily win a wide open AFC West.

Biggest Question: Is Matt Cassel Still the Answer In Kansas City?

Cassel came to Kansas City with a lot of hype after his showing in New England in 2008. He struggled in 2009, but came alive in 2010 with 27 TDs and only 7 interceptions. Last year Cassel struggled, only throwing 10 TDs and 9 interceptions in his nine starts. Cassel has yet to live up to the hype of his 2008 season with New England where he lead the team to an 11-5 record and just missing out on a Playoff berth. A lot of that had to do with what Josh McDaniels did with Cassel. The team brought in Kyle Orton last year after he went down. He played ok, but still couldn’t get the team over the hump. The Chiefs may be interested in Peyton Manning. The Chiefs have a good running back in Jamaal Charles and a stud WR in Dwayne Bowe, if he re-signs there. Manning could be intrigued playing in Kansas City. The Chiefs did it once with Joe Montana, why not try it with Manning. If not, this may be Cassel’s last chance to succeed as Chiefs quarterback this year.

Top 3 Free Agents

1. Dwayne Bowe: Wide Receiver

Bowe is a great wide receiver, and he would be even better with a just as good complimentary wide out. Could you imagine Manning, Charles, Bowe and Reggie Wane in one offense. Bowe has some work ethic issues at times, including his short hands he had in that missed catch against Pittsburgh. Someone will pay Bowe a lot of money to be there stud WR. He has great size and is a true #1 WR.

2. Brandon Carr: Cornerback

Carr is a very good cornerback. He has great ball-hawking skills and team’s refuse to throw the ball his play when playing the Chiefs, which is why some of his stats are so low. He will get #1 CB money on the market. I think the Chiefs will only keep one of Bowe and Carr, not both.

3. Jovan Belcher: Linebacker

Belcher played quite well at the inside linebacker spot for the Chiefs next year. He’s a good run stuffer and is still young and is only capable of improving even more. He’s a good, young player that the Chiefs shouldn’t lose.

Top 3 Needs

1. Offensive Line

Barry Richardson was not very good at right tackle last year. Also, Casey Wiegmann is 39 and is close to retiring this off-season. The Chiefs would like to land one of the top two tackles at the 11 pick, but they will probably be gone by then.

2. Nose Tackle

Kelly Gregg is 36 years old and declining in skills. Just like with the Raiders, there are plenty of options available at this position in free agency.

3. Running Back

While Jamaal Charles is expected to be healthy at the start of the season, running backs are often a bit different when they come back from a torn ACL. The Chiefs might try to Draft Trent Richardson or sign a high end back-up for Charles in free agency.

The Chiefs were very good in 2010, but injuries and bad play slowed them down in 2011. But if the team can return to healthy form in 2012, they may get right back to their division winning ways. The players like Romeo Crennel and you know they will play their hardest for him. If Matt Cassel improves his play, and the Chiefs keep Dwayne Bowe in the fold, they may be the best team in this division.

And there you have it. Next Preview will probably be out this weekend. It will be the NFC West.

Same division, different conference. It is time for Preview 2 of 8 in my off-season NFL look.

Today we look at the NFC South. This division may be one of the more competitive divisions in football this year. The Saints and the Falcons have been the top dogs in the division for years, but the Panthers may be knocking on the door. Cam Newton showed why he was the #1 overall pick last year, making big plays with his arm and legs. If the Panthers defense can get healthy, they may have a shot at competing for a Playoff spot this year. There were times two years ago that the Buccaneers looked like a young team on the rise, but they took an unexpected nose dive last year and fired Coach Raheem Morris and appear poised for a fresh start with new coach Greg Schiano.

New Orleans Saints

2011 Record: 13-3

After two questionable losses to the Bucs and Rams, many people questioned if this was the Saints team of old. They responded by winning eight in a row to end the regular season. Many people thought they were destined for a rematch with the Packers in the NFC Championship, but the upstart San Francisco 49ers had a different opinion. The Saints defense, which had been reliable throughout the year, let the 49ers offense drive down the field in under two minutes to win the game. Gregg Williams left as defensive coordinator, and now there are more questions than answers on defense. Offense should never be a problem, so long as Drew Brees is under center. Brees is a free agent and I am sure the two sides will come to an agreement before free agency. But if Brees leaves this team, they would go belly up. Brees is to the Saints as Peyton Manning is to the Colts.

Biggest Question: Can the Saints Defense Re-Group?

They would never admit it, but you know that the 49ers game winning drive in the Divisional Round is going to sting that Saints defense for some time. Alex Smith picked apart that defense not only on the last drive, but for most of the game as well. Gregg Williams loved to bring heavy pressure, but that didn’t help much in the Playoffs. The Saints defense also generated very few turnovers this year. Steve Spagnuolo takes over the defensive coordinator job this year. He lead the Giants defense that shut down the Patriots in the Super Bowl a few years ago. Spagnuolo was a wanted man this off-season and the Saints were lucky to get him. Spags should help turn around a defense that only had 9 interceptions last year.

Top 3 Free Agents

1. Drew Brees, QB

I’m 99% positive Drew Brees will not hit the open market because the Saints will do whatever possible to keep Brees in the fold. If he can’t be signed before free agency starts he will probably get the franchise tag. Brees is one of the elite QBs in the game and his skills have changed the Saints franchise and keeps the offense going.

2. Carl Nicks, G

Nicks is one of the best guards in all of the NFL. He was only flagged for two penalties all of last year. Nicks is still young at the age of 27 and has a bright future ahead of him. Hopefully the Saints don’t neglect Nicks in favor of Brees and let another team snag him.

3. Marques Colston, WR

Colston is the Saints top WR, but Brees seemed to favor Jimmy Graham a lot last year. The other problem Colston faces is that Drew Brees is so good and spreads the ball around so much that he may just be a product of the Saints system. The Saints might not want to pay Colston the money he desires and might let another team over pay him.

Top 3 Needs

1. Linebacker

Johnathan Vilma is good, but the rest of the Saints linebackers are not. They couldn’t cover Vernon Davis at all during the Divisional Round match-up. The Saints need to get more pressure on the QB and getting a linebacker or two that can actually get to the QB will help.

2. Defensive Line

Outside of Will Smith, no one on the line had more than four sacks. Again, the Saints need more pressure on the QB. This Draft is full of pass rushers, but the Saints don’t have a 1st round pick to get one.

3. Safety

Just like the Saints linebackers, Roman Harper was burned by Vernon Davis and in coverage the whole year. The Saints need an upgrade there.

As long as the Saints have Drew Brees they will be contenders in the NFC every year. But sooner or later teams will find ways to stop Brees, or at least slow him down. The Saints defense will need to improve their pass rush and coverage if they want to stay competitive. The Saints can’t get into shootouts every week and expect Drew Brees to bail them out every game. The Falcons will always be a direct competitor, and the Panthers are a young and up-and-coming team ready to challenge them as well. The Saints are still the favorites in the Division, but they will need to improve their defense if they want to get back to the Super Bowl.

Atlanta Falcons

2011 Record: 10-6

The Falcons couldn’t get over their Playoff hump again last year. Matt Ryan remains 0-3 as a starter in the Playoffs. The Falcons only managed a safety in their loss to the Giants. They would have been better getting shut out. While Matt Ryan is still a good young QB, if he doesn’t win a Playoff game this year there may be some questions regarding his future as a Playoff caliber QB in the league. Ryan has one of the best WR tandems in the league with Julio Jones and Roddy White on each side of him. He will learn a new offense this year with Mike Mularkey leaving for Jacksonville. But Ryan still needs to show he can win when it matters. Now with the Panthers on their tale, the Falcons need to worry about not falling to third in the Division.

Biggest Question: Does Mike Smith Need A Playoff Win to Save His Job?

Mike Smith has a 43-21 record in his four years as head coach. He has made the Playoffs in three of those years. But Smith, just like Matt Ryan, has yet to win a Playoff game as head coach. Two years ago they were the #1 seed in the NFC and ended up getting man-handled by the Packers at home. Smith faced some criticism this year when he went for it on 4th and 1 against the Saints in overtime from their own 26 yard line. You can bet owner Arthur Blank doesn’t like watching the Saints be successful all of the time. If Smith can’t get this team a Playoff win this year, could he be out the door? The Falcons have an array of talent and there are no excuses for their poor Playoff performances. Good regular season records don’t mean a thing if the success can’t carry over into the Playoffs.

Top 3 Free Agents

1. Curtis Lofton, LB

Lofton is the QB of the Falcons defense. He calls the plays and makes audibles when necessary. Lofton lead the team last year with 147 total tackles, 32 more than anyone else on the team. Losing Lofton means the Falcons would have to find a new leader on defense, and that is a tough think to do on a team with little depth at the linebacker position.

2. Brent Grimes, CB

Grimes is one of the better cornerbacks in the league. Grimes sat out the Playoff game due to an injury. Some reports say he could have played and sat out to get a big pay day. If that’s the case, expect Grimes to go to the team that offers him the most money, assuming the Falcons don’t place the franchise tag on him. But Grimes seems to be all about himself, so expect a lengthy holdout if that happens.

3. John Abraham, DE

Abraham had 9.5 sacks last year, double what anyone else had on the team. Abraham is 34 and losing some of his quickness, but with the Falcons lacking a 1st round pick this year the Falcons may want to lock up Abraham for one more year since it will be tough for them to improve in the Draft or in free agency. Abraham knows his time is running short and he may give it his all for one more run.

Top 3 Needs

1. Left Tackle

It is never a good thing when you have to bench your left tackle because of poor play during the regular season. That is what the Falcons did with Sam Baker. They replaced him with Will Svitek, who was just average at best. There are no star LTs in free agency, and it will be tough to land one in the Draft with no first round pick. Somehow the Falcons need to improve here, or Matt Ryan might not make it to the Playoffs.

2. Cornerback

Assuming Brett Grimes leaves, the Falcons will have a major hole to fill at cornerback. The Falcons secondary was torn apart by the Saints and the Giants in the Playoffs. If something doesn’t improve, then the Falcons will start getting torn apart by the Panthers and Lions as well.

3. Running Back

Yes, the Falcons still have Michael Turner. But Turner battled a groin injury in the second half of the year and it affected him. He only averaged 3.6 yards per carry and is missing that break away speed he had earlier in his career. A young replacement for Turner could be found late in the Draft. I don’t think Jacquizz Rodgers can be that back. He is more of a complimentary back than anything.

Much like I said with the Ravens last year, I think this may be the last shot this Falcons team has at winning the Super Bowl. There are some veterans on this team that are older and may only have one more shot, like John Abraham and TE Tony Gonzalez. Sooner or later, Matt Ryan and Coach Mike Smith will have to show they can win in the Playoffs as well. If that doesn’t happen this year, there may be some big changes to this team. With the Panthers looming, the Falcons know that it could be now or never for them in 2012.

Carolina Panthers

2011 Record: 6-10

Do you remember how last year everyone thought the Lions were going to be a Playoff team? You can expect to hear the same thing about the Panthers this year. All of that is because of one man, Cam Newton. Newton should flashes of brilliance last year during the season. He is very Mike Vick like in his approach. You don’t know if he will beat you with his arm or legs. One of the biggest issues facing the Panthers last year was their lack of a running attack outside of Newton as well as a rash of injuries on defense. The Panthers had a handful of injuries to their linebackers and defensive secondary. If they can return to 100% health and Newton can keep up his stellar play, the Panthers will be a dangerous team next year.

Biggest Question: Can Cam Newton Avoid A Sophomore Slump?

It happens all the time with rookie QBs. They have a good year in their first season, and look to be ready to take a big leap the next year. But for some reason, they always regress. It happened with Matt Ryan, and it happened with Sam Bradford this year. Newton of course is a different breed of QB compared to these two. You have to shut down Newton in the air and on the ground. Teams can put a spy on Newton, but that leaves a man out of coverage. Big things are expected out of Newton this year and it will be interesting to see if he can live up to the hype. I think you will see a slight decline in Newton’s stats, but it will almost be impossible for defenses to completely shut him down. He is too good of a talent.

Top Free Agents

1. Dan Connor, LB

The Panthers don’t have many big time free agents to worry about re-signing. Dan Connor might be the only one worth a look. Connor filled in quite well for Jon Beason this past year. Beason hasn’t played a full season in the last two years because of injury. If they want Connor as insurance, they will have to over pay him to be a back-up. Connor is young and talented and could easily start somewhere else. I doubt the Panthers will want to match the big offer Connor will probably receive from someone else.

Top 3 Needs

1. Cornerback

The Panthers defense was constantly torched by opposing pass units last year. Newton can’t continue to win games by himself. If their is a top cornerback the Panthers like at the #9 pick, they won’t hesitate to grab him. Chris Gamble can’t cover everyone by himself.

2. Defensive Tackle

The Panthers used two middle round draft picks on defensive tackles last year and that didn’t work out too well for them. Terrell McClain was constantly pushed around. The Panthers need an upgrade in the middle.

3. Wide Receiver

While Steve Smith experienced a rebirth last year, he is also getting up there in age. Smith will need someone to compliment him this year. The Panthers don’t have any other real threats next to him. There will be some WRs that will relish the opportunity to play with Newton and the up and coming Panthers, so Carolina should look to give Newton another weapon or two this off-season.

The Panthers will be a very cliche pick to make the Playoffs this year. They have a QB that is coming off of a hot season, a defense that will be healthy, and a re-energized fan base expecting big things. While they may challenge the Falcons for second in the Division, I still think they area long way from competing with the Saints to be called top dog. The Panthers will be a pain for teams to stop this year and they will make every game they are in interesting, but I still think they are one year away from being a Playoff team. I expect an 8-8 or 9-7 finish with the Panthers falling just short of a Wild Card.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers

2011 Record: 4-12

Remember the end of the 2010 season, when everyone thought Tampa Bay looked like a young promising team on their way up. They finished the season 10-6 and had a strong nucleus at QB (Josh Freeman), RB (LeGarrette Blount) and WR (Mike Williams). Well, those dreams were put to a screeching halt this past season. After starting the season 4-2 and getting impressive wins over Atlanta and New Orleans, the Bucs went on to lose 8 straight games and finish with a 4-12 record. It was apparent by Week 14 that the team had essentially given up on the season and quit on Coach Raheem Morris. Morris was fired in the off-season. The Bucs first choice, Oregon Head Coach Chip Kelly, backed out during negotiations and Tampa was forced to go to Plan B and bring in Rutgers Coack Greg Shiano. Not a very sexy hire, but Schiano will make sure he has players on his team that are focused and not giving up. But the Bucs have a long way to go if they want to get back to their 2010 promise.

Biggest Question: Can Tampa Bay’s Offense Get Resurrected?

Tampa Bay’s offense was abysmal last year. They didn’t score more than 26 points all year. Josh Freeman regressed greatly, as did his running back counterpart LeGarrette Blount. The team just lost all kinds of focus. Josh Freeman’s statline was particularly troubling. He went from throwing 25 touchdowns and 6 interceptions in 16 games last year to throwing 16 touchdowns and 22 interceptions in 15 games this year. That regression is not good. Schiano, along with new offensive coordinator Butch Davis, will have a lot of work to do to get Freeman right again. Mike Williams drop off in production can be contributed to Freeman’s play. Blount’s Yards per carry dropped by almost a full yard. There’s a lot of work to be done in Tampa Bay.

Top 3 Free Agents

1. Michael Bennett, DE

Despite my focus on the Bucs offense, Tampa’s defense was just as bad, if not worse this past year. Bennett was the one bright spot. He contributed four sacks and was very good against the run as well.

2. Connor Barth, K

Much like Josh Scobee in Jacksonville, Barth was much of Tampa’s offense this past year. He hit on 26 of his 28 field goals, including going 15 of 17 from 40+ yards. Having a good kicker for a struggling offense makes up for the lack of TDs at times.

3. Josh Johnson, QB

When Johnson has been given the opportunity to play he has shown some flashes of potential out there. Some team might think he good be their future starter, while that doesn’t appear to be the case in Tampa. Expect Johnson to leave and Tampa to bring in a veteran QB to back-up and mentor Freeman.

Top 3 Needs

1. Cornerback

Ronde Barber isn’t getting any younger, and Aqib Talib is looking at possible jail time. The Bucs have the #5 pick and are hoping LSU CB Morris Claiborne falls to them. The team has no depth at the position and is in need of a major upgrade.

2. Linebacker

Tampa’s linebackers gave them absolutely nothing last year. Almost no sacks and pressure on the QB. They probably need to revamp the entire LB corps, and it will get worse if Geno Hayes leaves.

3. Wide Receiver

Josh Freeman might be better if he had more than Mike Williams to throw to. Kellen Winslow was a disappointment last year, and Freeman had no one else to stretch the field for him.

In a division that is on the rise, the last thing Tampa Bay could afford was a drop off last year. They now have to start over with a new coach and a new offensive scheme. The first thing Coach Schiano will have to do is get his team re-focused and not allow any mental lapses like the Bucs had last year. It could be another long year in Bucs land. They are lacking a lot of pieces to compete, and will be getting younger and inexperienced as they begin to rebuild and regroup from a letdown of a season.

There’s piece 2. Look for piece 3 possibly this weekend.

The NFL season may be over, but the off-season is just getting started!

Starting with this Preview, I will be doing previews of each division this off-season. Expect me to pump out one of these a week. Depending on time I may be able to do two. I love writing about the NFL and I didn’t want to stop during the off-season.

Our first preview takes a look at the AFC South. The tide finally turned in the division last year, with the Texans winning their first division title while the Colts, who were mainstays at the top, finished with a 2-14 record and earned the 1st pick in this year’s Draft. But of course, the biggest question surrounding the Colts is the future of Peyton Manning. Is Manning healthy? Will he still be a Colt at the start of the year? No one really knows. Then there are the Titans and Jaguars. The Titans improved towards the end of the year but just fell short of the Playoffs and now face a QB controversy heading into the season. The Jaguars, meanwhile, hired Mike Mularkey to be their new coach and try to fix QB Blaine Gabbert.

I will be doing a team by team preview, with each team’s pending big free agents as well as their biggest needs and questions facing them.

Houston Texans

2011 Record: 10-6

Many people thought the Texans would make a big step toward the Playoffs last year, and they did. The Texans won their first Division Title and made the Playoffs for the first time in Franchise history. They did all of that without their star pass rusher Mario Williams. They also lost WR Andre Johnson for most of the season to a hamstring injury and lost QB Matt Schaub for the year with a foot injury. The Texans jumped out to enough of a lead in the AFC South to clinch the division with two weeks to go. They easily handled the Bengals in the Divisional Round and held their own against the Ravens. If Matt Schaub had been in that game, the Texans might have won. T.J. Yates performed adequately in relief of Schaub, but there is no doubt this is Schaub’s team. The Texans may experience a slight drop off this coming season, but I would still peg them as the favorites in the AFC South for the time being.

Biggest Question: Will Cap Issues Cause A Big Departure?

The Texans have a lot of free agents and not enough cap room to re-sign all of them. That could lead to a few tricky situations for the Texans. RB Arian Foster is a restricted free agent and the Texans will undoubtedly franchise tag him and ask for the max back if another team signs him to an offer sheet. If another team signs Foster, they will have to surrender a 1st round draft pick. While Ben Tate filled in nicely when Foster went down, he isn’t the type of back Foster is.

The bigger issue facing the Texans will be whether or not they can keep DE/OLB Mario Williams. Williams missed most of the season with a torn pectoral muscle. Teams will be throwing a ton of money at Williams. And as he showed in his brief time this season, Williams can play OLB in a 3-4 scheme or could easily transition back to DE in a 4-3 scheme. If you ask me, Williams is the crown jewel of the free agent market. That includes if Peyton Manning becomes available. Williams is a game changing pass rusher that makes any defensive front intimidating.

The Texans would like to re-sign two of their interior lineman: Chris Myers and Mike Brisiel. They also have K Neil Rackers to re-sign. It may take a hometown discount to re-sign Williams. He would like to remain a Texan, but of course, that always means at the right price. I see Williams walking to whoever offers him the most money and he feels is close enough to a contender so he can win a Championship. I guess I just listed most of the Texans big free agents so I can skip that part.

Top Needs

1. Wide Receiver

Maybe the Texans finally realize that Andre Johnson is very injury prone. When he went down last year, the team had to rely on Kevin Walter and Jacoby Jones to carry the load for the team. When your secondary options can be covered in single coverage, that allows defenses to step up and stop your running game. The Texans could address this in free agency or in the Draft.

2. Nose Tackle

While the Texans defense was strong last year, nose tackle was a weak link of the front seven. Shaun Cody did not provide much of a presence up front for the Texans, only providing 23 tackles and one sack. The Texans would be best to address this position in the Draft. There are plenty of options available in the end of the first round for them to choose from.

3. Interior Lineman

If the Texans are unable to re-sign Myers or Biesiel, then they will need to find replacements for them. The Texans don’t have a lot of depth on the offensive line. Wade Smith is also a weak link at LT and the Texans could use an upgrade there.

I think the Texans are still the favorites to win the AFC South next year. If they can find a way to re-sign Mario Williams, then they may be my favorites to win the AFC. The offense is fun to watch and the defense played surprisingly well in their first season in the 3-4 look.

Tennessee Titans

2011 Record: 9-7

The Titans surprised most people with their play this past year. They needed one more win to make the Playoffs, and I’m sure they are kicking themselves for losing to Indianapolis in Week 15. Lots of the Titans early struggles had to do with the slow start of RB Chris Johnson. Johnson held out for most of training camp and was clearly not in game shape come the start of the season. The Titans relied on Matt Hasselbeck at QB for most of the year, but Jake Locker looked ready to be the man in Tennessee at the end of the year. He filled in quite well for Hasselbeck when he went down with an injury. The Titans defense is in need of some changes. They ranked 31st in sacks and 24th in interceptions. They need to address that in the Draft, because they will lose some key defensive pieces in free agency.

Biggest Question: Who Starts at QB Week 1?

Matt Hasselbeck will be 36 at the start of the season and has been injury prone the past few years. While he helped the Titans finish with the record they did, he is also declining in ability and is clearly not the future of the franchise. The Titans drafted Jake Locker in Round One last year. In three real game appearances, Locker threw for 4 touchdowns and looked solid in the pocket. Locker played quite well in relief of Hasselbeck against New Orleans. I’m sure training camp will be used to determine who will be the starter, but I’m pretty sure Jake Locker will be under center for the Titans in Week 1. Locker has more mobility and can make more plays than Hasselbeck will be able to.

Top 3 Free Agents

1. CB Cortland Finnegan

Finnegan is a very good CB but also has a temper and can be a boatload to handle at times. While he is valuable to the Titans, they may not want to deal with his behavioral problems on and off the field. Most people expect him to reunite with his old coach Jeff Fisher in St. Louis.

2. S Michael Griffin

While Griffin finally put together a solid season last year, he still struggled with consistency before this year and there is no guarantee he can repeat the success he had last year. Griffin will probably ask for money based on this year’s performance, but the Titans will more than likely not want to give him that kind of money.

3. DT Jason Jones

Jones played well for Coach Jeff Fisher in his defensive scheme, but struggled last year under Mike Munchak’s new one. Jones is a wide nine technique, so he would fit well in a place like Philadelphia. He is still young and can still turn into a starting caliber defensive end.

Top Needs

1. Defensive Line

If the Titans want to compete for the AFC South crown they will need to improve their pathetic pass rush. I don’t know if they will be players for Mari Williams or Cliff Avril, but they will need an overhaul from somewhere. There are a boatload of pass rushers in this year’s Draft and the Titans will try to grab one of them.

2. Cornerback

There will be a big drop off in the secondary if Finnegan leaves. They don’t have another corner on their roster capable of replacing his play making ability. A weak secondary and pass rush is a bad combination.

3. Interior Lineman

Eugene Amano is not a very good center, and RG Jake Scott is aging and a free agent. If the team wants Chris Johnson to rebound from an off year, they will need to find interior lineman who can create holes for him. Improving the offensive line will also help Jake Locker under center.

If the Titans can improve their defense, they may be one of those fringe Wild Card candidates again this year. Getting Kenny Britt back will be huge for this team. He was having a monster year before his injury. Chris Johnson should return to the CJ2K of 2010 with a full off-season of preparation. The Titans season will depend on how Jake Locker. If he played like he did for those flashes in 2011, the Titans will be in good shape. How Locker handles the pressure of being a starting NFL QB will determine the Titans season.

Jacksonville Jaguars

2011 Record: 5-11

The Jaguars fired Jack Del Rio just after the midway point of last season. They were looking for an offensive mind to replace him, and they got one with the hiring of Mike Mularkey. Mularkey was the offensive coordinator in Atlanta and had a previous head coaching gig in Buffalo. Being from Buffalo, I can tell you Mularkey got a pretty raw deal here. He got the Bills the closest they have been to the Playoffs in the last decade. Mularkey has a good offensive mind and is a good choice to help mold Blaine Gabbert into a decent NFL QB. The Jaguars are missing a lot of pieces and are not close to contending for a Playoff spot. They have one solid asset, and that is running back Maurice Jones-Drew. He is a workhorse in the backfield.

Biggest Question: Can Blaine Gabbert Turn Into An NFL QB?

The Jaguars drafted Blaine Gabbert to be their franchise QB. They dumped David Garrard before the start of the season and handed the keys over to Gabbert in Week 3. Gabbert never looked comfortable the whole season. Gabbert would look intimidated anytime he saw pressure coming at him. Often times he would thrown off his back foot when faced with a pass rush, something an NFL QB should not do on a regular basis. The problem was that the Jaguars had no one else to turn to. Luke McCown wasn’t the answer. He’s a free agent this off-season and won’t be back. Look for Jacksonville to sign a veteran back-up that will help mentor Gabbert. Mike Mularkey has the task of turning Gabbert around. The first thing he needs to do is get him some better weapons at WR. Gabbert also needs to improve his accuracy in the pocket. Any chance the Jags have this season rests on Gabbert’s shoulders.

Top 3 Free Agents

1. Jeremy Mincey: Defensive End

Mincey surprised many people last year with a strong performance. He had eight sacks and 57 tackles, and even forced four fumbles. Mincey was the Jaguars best pass rusher and they need to re-sign him, otherwise they have another need to fill.

2. William Middleton: Cornerback

Middleton played rather well when he stepped in to fill in for the injury-riddled Jaguars secondary. At the age of 26, Middleton is still young and has a lot of potential.

3. Josh Scobee: Kicker

A kicker you say? Scobee was the Jaguars most reliable weapon for points last year. He went 23-for-25 last year and 5-for-6 from 50+ yards. If Gabbert continues to struggle, having a solid kicker will help the Jags put points on the board.

Top Needs

1. Wide Receiver

If Justin Blackmon somehow falls to the Jaguars at the 7th pick they will be sprinting to the podium. It is tough to get free agents to come to Jacksonville. They will more than likely look to add a WR in the 2nd Round and might try to get a veteran free agent or two if possible.

2. Cornerback

Even if the Jaguars re-sign Middleton, they also have Rasheed Mathis who is a free agent. Mathis is 32 and might not want to come back to a young and re-building Jags team.

3. Defensive End

There are a boatload of options for the Jaguars at the #7 pick in the Draft if they want a pass rushing end. The Jaguars need to have more than one pass rusher that can get to the QB and cause some pressure.

The Jaguars are a young, re-building team that doesn’t show any signs of being competitive this year. Even if Gabbert does improve, I don’t think they have any shot of finishing over .500 barring some big off-season acquisitions. Jacksonville will go through some pains this season and will probably not be too fun to watch. But that shouldn’t be a worry for the 50 or so fans they actually have.

Indianapolis Colts

2011 Record: 2-14

We apparently found out this past season that one player can mean that much to a team. When Peyton Manning couldn’t go this season, the entire team struggled. The offense had no leader and could not score points. The defense was then put in a bad situation and they suffered as a result. The defense also suffered through a handful of injuries at the linebacker and cornerback position. That resulted in the Colts getting the 1st overall pick in this Year’s Draft, and the right to draft QB Andrew Luck. That obviously creates a dilemma with Luck and Manning. Luck isn’t the type of prospect that you want sitting for a couple of years. Luck is ready to play now. The Colts also have a new coach in former Ravens defensive coordinator Chuck Pagano. Pagano will bring a new attitude to the Colts, much different than the bland and boring Jim Caldwell.

Biggest Question: Do I Even Have to State It? Two Words: Peyton Manning!

Everyday there is a different story out regarding Peyton Manning. Some days he is back to 100% and ready to play. Other days he can’t throw a ball for the life of him and has to retire. Then Peyton and Colts owner Jim Irsay are negotiating, then they aren’t. Peyton Manning is one of my favorite athletes ever, but even I am starting to get sick of all of the Peyton talk. They key date is March 8. That is when Peyton is due his $28 million roster bonus. If Manning can’t prove that he is healthy, there is no way the Colts pay him that. The Colts know what they are getting with Andrew Luck, and they won’t hesitate to cut or trade Peyton if he isn’t 100%. My gut tells me Peyton won’t be a Colt next year. It is just way too much money to commit to a QB who may never be fully healthy ever again.

Top 3 Free Agents

1. Reggie Wayne: Wide Receiver

Wayne has been the go to WR for Peyton ever since Marvin Harrison left. Wayne is going to be 34 at the start of the season and while he says he would come back to be a part of the re-build, I find it highly unlikely the Colts retain him. Wayne will catch on with a Championship caliber team.

2. Pierre Garcon: Wide Receiver

Garcon turned out to be the Colts most valuable WR last year. He lead the team in receiving yards and receptions. He is a speed WR who can burn defenders and would help Luck greatly.

3. Robert Mathis: Defensive End

Dwight Freeney is the Colts top pass rusher, but Mathis isn’t too shabby either. He is over 30 but still has the speed to get to the QB and will attract some attention this off-season. I doubt Mathis comes back to Indy if they are re-building, but it will be interesting to see if Mathis can produce on a consistent basis without Dwight Freeney on the opposite end of him.

Top Needs

1. Interior Lineman

Center Jeff Saturday and Guards Mike Pollack and Ryan Diem are all free agents. Saturday will more than likely follow Peyton wherever he goes. Even if the Colts re-sign one or both guards, they still need to get better upfront, otherwise Andrew Luck won’t have much of a career in the NFL.

2. Secondary

The Colts cornerbacks and safeties may be the worst starters in the league. They were consistently burned on a regular basis all year. Teams could pick them apart with ease. Somehow they need to get better, especially at the cornerback position.

3. Wide Receiver

Along with Wayne and Garcon, Anthony Gonzalez is also a free agent. That would leave Austin Collie and Blair White as the team’s starters. Some WRs might look forward to playing with a young phenom like Andrew Luck, but those types probably wouldn’t help the Colts win. Luck needs weapons though if he is going to be good in his first year.

The Colts are a re-building team, but the future will be bright with Andrew Luck. Luck will be under center for this team for years, very similar to Peyton Manning. If the Colts build around him right then they will be back to the top of the league in the next five years. But Luck needs a strong supporting cast, and that has to start with a strong Draft class this year.

There you have it. The first of eight Division previews. Don’t know which Division will be next, but look for it during the middle of next week.
