u-marylandThe Maryland Terrapins bulldozed the Howard Bison 52-13, as the D.J. Durkin Era begin in winning style much to the delight of the crowd at Capital One Field at Maryland Stadium.

The Maryland (1-0) faithful got their first look at “Durkin’s Dudes” and the former Michigan defensive coordinator’s team did not disappoint.

The team was ready to play and were well prepared committing only two penalties the entire game. The contest was expected to be a blow out and it was, with the Terps trouncing the Bison right from the start, jumping out to a 21-0 first quarter lead.

Maryland looked good in all phases of the game and a blocked punt for a scoop and score was one of the highlights of the first 15 minutes of play.

The fans got used to hearing the scoring cannon blast in the first half as Maryland kept their foot on the gas and won the game in the first two quarters, sprinting out to a 35-0 halftime advantage.

It was 42-0 after three quarters. Howard scored all of their points in the fourth quarter against the Maryland reserves as 14 freshmen saw action in the game. Maryland kicker Adam Greene chipped in with a 36-yard field goal in the fourth quarter making the score 45-0.

The Terps won the game on the ground as they gained 317 yards rushing for the game. Six different backs scored touchdowns. The rushing attack was paced by two freshmen. Lorenzo Harrison led the way with nine carries for 67 yards and one touchdown and Jake Funk contributed 59 yards on eight attempts along with his first rushing touchdown as a Terrapin.

Running back Trey Edmunds chipped in with 48 yards and two touchdowns including scoring on the blocked punt. Maryland racked up 521 yards of total offense for the day and were seven of 12 on third down conversions.

Meanwhile, the defense was stellar, holding Howard to 53 yards in the first half and only 69 yards rushing for the game.

Maryland’s starting quarterback, senior Perry Hills was on target all day as he completed 14 of 19 passes for 126 yards.

Freshman quarterback Tyrrell Pigrome replaced him in the third quarter and the duel-threat quarterback was poised and efficient. He completed four of six passes for 60 yards and ran seven times for 53 yards and one touchdown.

Maryland’s DeAndre Lane led the receivers with five catches for 73 yards and D.J. Moore corralled four passes for 37 yards.

Howard was led in passing by two quarterbacks. Kalen Johnson was 10 of 15 for 100 yards and one touchdown. He was nearly matched by Jason Collins who completed eight of 14 passes for 100 yards and one touchdown.

Their rushing attack was led by Anthony Philyaw who ran 18 times for 53 yards. Howard was led in receiving by Kyle Anthony who has seven catches for 78 yards and two touchdowns in a losing effort for the (0-1) Bison.
