Redskins Tie Bengals
The Washington Redskins and Cincinnati Bengals played to a 27-27 tie before a packed crowd at Wembley Stadium in London.
The Redskins had the best chance to win, but kicker Dustin Hopkins, who had just kicked a field goal with just over a minute to play in regulation to even the score, pushed his OT 34-yarder to the left.
Washington later recovered a fumble near mid field as the OT period was winding down but also could not convert on that opportunity.
The Brits are used to seeing ties in their version of football, but this was the first tie for Washington since 1997 when that game against the Giants ended 7-7.
Redskins quarterback Kirk Cousins was 38 for a team-record 56 attempts for 458 yards with two touchdowns and one interception.
The air attack was led by Jamison Crowder who had nine receptions for 107 yards and one touchdown and Jordan Reed, back from a concussion, who caught nine passes for 99 yards and one touchdown.
The ground game was led by rookie Robert Kelley, who was starting for the injured Matt Jones. He gained 87 yards on 21 carries including his first career touchdown.
Bengal’s quarterback Andy Dalton was 27 for 42 for 284 yards with one touchdown and one interception.
Jeremy Hill led their rushing attack with 20 carries for 76 yards and one touchdown.
They finished the game with two 100-yard receivers. A J. Green led the way with nine catches for 121 yards. Tyler Eifert had nine receptions for 102 yards and one touchdown.
Washington out gained the Bengals 546 yards to 415 but was stopped by committing 15 penalties for 106 yards.
Each team had a rushing touchdown in the first quarter and a 20-yard field goal from Hopkins in the second quarter gave the Redskins a 10-7 lead at halftime.
The Bengals got a 15-yard third quarter TD pass from Dalton to Eifert but were doomed by a missed extra point, making the score 13-10.Dalton added a one-yard touchdown run to make the score 20-10 but Washington rallied.
Cousins hit Reed with a 23-yard scoring pass to make the score 20-17 with 3:02 to go in the third quarter.
Washington later regained the lead at 24-20 on a Crowder 33-yard scoring strike with 9:30 to play in the game.
Cincinnati countered with a Hill one-yard scoring dash making the score 27-24 with 6:54 to go.
Hopkins hit a 40-yard field goal with 1:07 to go to tied the game.
Both teams had chances to win, each missing field goals but the missed extra point by the Bengals turned out to be the difference in the game as neither team could score in the overtime period.
Washington is now (4-3-1) and last in the NFC East and the Bengals are (3-4-1) good for second place in the AFC North as each team heads into a bye week after a tie week.
