Redskins run past Packers

The Washington Redskins whipped the Green Bay Packers, 42-24 before a celebrating Sunday night  crowd at FedEx Field.

The turning point came with Washington ahead 29-24 and Green Bay, having just scored a touchdown, having all the momentum.

The Redskins were facing a fourth and one on their own 41-yard line with 6:12 to play in the game.

The last thing Coach Jay Gruden wanted to do was give the ball right back to Aaron Rogers and the Packers.

So he went for it and a quarterback sneak by Kirk Cousins gained two yards for the most important first down of the game.

That play ended up being part of an 81-yard 11-play drive that ended with rookie running back Robert Kelley scoring on a one-yard touchdown run that made the score 35 -24 with 3:54 to go.

Kelley, who had a breakout game, scored the last of his three touchdowns on a four-yard burst up the middle to give his team a commanding 42-24 lead with 2:26 to play.

He finished the game with a career-high 137 yards on 24 carries including a sensational 66-yard gallop that set up the final Redskin touchdown of the game.

As good as he was, the star of the game for the (6-3-1) Redskins was Cousins. He was 21 for 30 for 375 yards and three touchdowns. Playing against a fierce wind, he whipped touchdown passes of 70 yards to Pierre Garcon ( 6 catches 116 yards) 44 yards to Jamison Crowder ( three catches for 104 yards) and 17 yards to DeSean Jackson (four catches for 51 yards).

Rogers was nearly as spectacular for the Packers. He was 26 for 41 for 351 yards and three scores.He was also his team’s leading rusher, scrambling to extend plays while gaining 33 yards on three carries.

Jackson’s touchdown opened the scoring and gave Washington an early 7-0 lead.

The Packers rallied to score 10 straight points but Washington ended the first half with a Kelley 10-yard touchdown scamper that made the score 13-10 after a failed two point conversion attempt.

The Redskins scored a touchdown and a field goal in the third quarter but a missed extra point left the score 22-10 with two minutes to go in the third quarter.

Rogers responded with a 31-yard touchdown strike to James Starks to make the score 22-17 with 14:51 to play in the game.

Cousins countered with his bomb to Garcon making the score 29-17 and the Packers came back with a six-yard TD pass from Rogers to Jared Cook to make the score 29-24 setting up the exciting finish.

Green Bay was led in receiving by Cook who had six receptions for 102 yards and one score for the (4-6) Packers.
