u-marylandThe Maryland Terrapins walloped the Wagner Seahawks, 82-48, winning their  first-ever Big Ten season-opener at Xfinity Center.

Maryland (1-0)  senior Dez Wells led the way with 18 points. Junior Jake Layman added 16 points, nine  rebounds and a career-high six assists, as the Terps won their 38th straight home opener.

Maryland’s top freshman recruit, Melo Trimble, the #1 rated player in the state of Maryland, scored 13 points, but had no assists as he played point guard in his first collegiate game.

Another Maryland newcomer, transfer Richaud Pack added eight points, going 2-2 from three point range. Freshman Dion Wiley, a four-star prospect from Potomac High in Maryland, finished his first college game with eight points. Fellow freshman Jared Nickens, another four-star player from New Jersey, finished the game with five points.

Maryland’s international recruit, 7-1 freshman Michal Cekovsky from Slovakia, finished the game with three points, three rebounds and two forceful blocked shots.

The game was never in doubt as the Terrapins never trailed and had a 43-17 halftime lead.

The Terrapins held the Seahawks (0-1) to 26.9 percent shooting from the field, and they were only 3-23 on three point attempts. Meanwhile, Maryland shot 54.5 percent from the floor, including seven for 14 from three-point land.

The Terps biggest lead of the game was 38 points with 6:58 to play in the game. Maryland also led the rebounding battle 44-35.

The Seahawks, from Staten Island, were led by Nolan Long who finished with a game high in points (13) and rebounds (9). Corey Henson chipped in with eight points and three assists for Wagner.
