The third-ranked Maryland Terrapins, behind 24 points from guard Melo Trimble, came back to whip their crosstown rival, the Georgetown Hoyas, 75-71 at a sold out and ecstatic Xfinity Center.
The Terps, who trailed most of the second half, were down 61-54 with 5:48 to play in the game but rallied and a Trimble three was part of a 7-0 run that tied the game at 61-61 with just under four minutes to go.
The teams then traded baskets but it was a clutch bucket from Rasheed Sulaimon who hit a three-pointer to give his team a 71-68 lead with 1:18 remaining in the game.
Trimble, who also had three assists and three steals, then hit two free throws to give his team a 73-68 lead with 12 seconds to play. Hoya D’Vauntes Smith-Rivera then hit a three to cut the Terps lead to 73-71 with five seconds to play.
Trimble then went to the free throw line again and hit two more shots to help his team secure their second (2-0) win of the season.
Senior Jake Layman, scored 15 points, all in the second half, and it was his clutch three that gave the Terps a 66-63 lead with 2:20 to go. He also grabbed five rebounds and handed out two assists.
Terrapin Robert Carter added 12 points and a team-high eight rebounds. Five-star freshman Diamond Stone, who struggled with foul trouble, ended the game with five points.
Georgetown opened the highly-anticipated game on a 9-0 run to take an early lead. The Terps, in a game of runs, rallied and took their first lead of the game at 12-11 on a Michal Cekovsky dunk with 13:31 to play in the first half. He provided a spark coming off the bench and finished the game with four points and three rebounds.
Georgetown later took a seven point lead at 28-21 with 4:28 to go in the first half. Again, Maryland came back and a Sulaimon three tied the game at the half, 33-33.
The Hoyas controlled the game for most of the second half, but the story of the game for the home team was their ability to come back and keep the game close. They rallied from another seven point deficit with just under six minutes to go to secure the victory and gain local bragging rights for the year.
The Hoyas did win the rebounding battle 36-28. Maryland was 23-32 for 72 percent shooting from the free throw line. The Hoyas shot 75 percent going nine for 12 from the charity stripe.
Neither team shot better than 50 percent from the field. The Hoyas were eight for 19 from three-point land for 42 percent shooting from beyond the arc. Maryland went eight of 21 for 38 percent from long distance.
Bradley Hayes led Georgetown with 16 points and also had a team-high eight rebounds. Smith-Rivera finished the game with 14 points while Issac Copeland and Marcus Derrickson each scored 13 points and corralled six rebounds in a losing effort for the (0-2) Hoyas.
