mattzuercherMatt Zuercher has resigned as head football coach at Waynedale High School. Bears Athletic Director Chris Lapish confirmed the news Friday morning.

Zuercher became head coach prior to the 2006 football season, taking over the spot held by Bill Sedar. During that time, Zuercher led the Bears into the playoffs 4 times with his best year being 9-3 in 2007. Zuercher amassed a career record of 58 wins and 57 losses. That includes a playoff record of 1-4.

This past season the Bears took their lumps. After a playoff season in 2015 in which they finished 7-4 and a loss at Swanton in the Regional Quarterfinals 38-28, Waynedale was hit with the largest graduating class of any team in the WCAL. In 2016, WHS had only 12 Seniors and Juniors combined on the team and finished 1-9.

Next year the new coach will inherit a team that has 37 returning players. Most who have varsity experience. Sophomore Quarterback Derek Reber along with backfield mate and running back Logan Stanley. Returning on the offensive line is Juniors Ty Straits, Ben Farrar and Dylan Amstutz. Also on the line will be sophomore’s Rhett Hofacre, Asa Plant, Ty Matter, Tom Moskowitz and David Satterfield. At receiver and Defensive Backs the Bears have Gage Gray, Max Lemon, Luke McCreary, Chase Murphy and Carson Ledford coming back.

Zuercher is a graduate of Waynedale High School and attended college at the University of Akron. No time table been established on when a replacement will be named.
