Terps Whip Wolverines

The Maryland Terrapins rebounded from their worst loss of the season by whipping the Michigan Wolverines 77-70 at the Crisler Center.

The score was 73-70 with 30 seconds to play and the Terps finished the game by having their freshman making the most important plays of the contest.

Both Justin Jackson and Anthony Cowan responded to the moment by sinking  two free throws and snagging and important rebound helping Maryland secure their first real road win of the season while improving to (14-2, 2-1 Big Ten).

The victory helped the Terrapins forget their meltdown home loss to Nebraska, 67-65 when they lost a big lead in the closing minutes and failed to respond to the Cornhuskers late run.

The Terps had other stars as center Demonte Dodd displayed an inside presence while scoring a career-high 15 points.

And sharp-shooter Jared Nickens was his old self again, hitting all four of his three-pointers while providing a spark off the bench with 12 points.

Jackson also had 15 points and grabbed six rebounds while shooting six of seven from the floor.

Star guard Melo Trimble finished with 13 points six rebounds four assists and three steals. Cowan ended with nine points five rebounds and four assists.

Both teams shot well from the floor but the Terps separated themselves by making 10 of 15 three-pointers while holding the Wolverines to eight of 21 from long distance.

Maryland controlled the first half with a Dodd dunk giving them a 4-3 lead with 18:43 to go. They would maintain the lead the rest of the half and a Jackson three gave them a 28-18 advantage with 5:49 to go before halftime and the Terps took a 37-28 lead at the break.

Although the game was close in the second half Maryland never lost the lead and had a 37-30 advantage with 17:55 to go and a 50-44 lead after another Nicken’s three with 10:40 to go in the game.

Michigan never let the Terps open up a double-digit lead and a three by the Wolverine’s Moritz Wagner made the score 71-68 with 74 seconds to play setting up the exciting finish.

Maryland won the rebounding battle 33-26 and were 11 of 14 from the free throw line while Michigan was six for 10 from the charity stripe.

Michigan was led by Wagner who scored 17 points and grabbed five rebounds. Zac Irvin added 15 points three rebounds and three assists in a losing effort for the (11-5, 1-2) Wolverines.
