The Washington Commanders clobbered the Cleveland Browns 34-13 under the cover of a beautiful blue sky much to the delight of the 59,030 who packed the gridiron now known as Northwest Stadium.
Washington was led by the NFL Rookie of the Month of September Jayden Daniels who continues to play up to the lofty expectations set for the number 2 overall pick in the 2024 NFL draft.
He completed 14 of 25 passes for 238 yards with one touchdown and one interception. As a dual threat he led the team in rushing with 82 yards on 11 carries.
His spectacular play has carried the Commanders to a four-game winning streak and a (4-1) record good enough for first place in the NFC East Division. He is currently 5th in the NFL with a passer rating of 106.3.
His favorite target this gorgeous day was wide receiver Terry McLaurin who caught four passes for 112 yards. Dyami Brown followed him with two catches for 57 yards including a beautiful 41-yard touchdown pass that dropped right into his arms along the right side of the endzone.
Commanders running back Austin Ekeler, back from a concussion, had six carries for 67 yards and his running mate Jeremy McNichols finished with 44 yards on seven carries and one touchdown.
The Washington defense showed up recording seven sacks and holding the Browns to 212 total yards including only 125 yards passing for constantly harassed Cleveland quarterback Deshaun Watson.
The game was so lopsided that Commander’s backup quarterback Marcus Mariota came in with 12:50 to go in the game giving Daniels a chance to sit on the bench and enjoy the view.
The Commanders began the rout with a Robinson four-yard scoring dash making the score 7-0 with 2:40 to go in the first quarter.
The Browns countered with a Dustin Hopkins 51-yard field goal making the score 7-3 with 13:08 to go in the second quarter.
Then the Washington scoring avalanche began.
An Austin Seibert 27-yard field goal upped the lead to 10-3 and that was followed by another Robinson scoring run this time from one-yard out and Washington closed out the second quarter with that Brown 41-yard touchdown reception making the score 24-3 at the half.
A third quarter Browns field goal made the score 24-6 but Washington quickly countered with a McNichols three-yard scoring run and another Seibert field goal this time from 30-yards out making the score 34-6 with 2:35 to go in the third quarter.
Siebert has been a pleasant surprise and is kicking at 100% accuracy a welcome site as the Commanders had quite a kicking carousel earlier in the season. He is third in the NFL in scoring with 49 points.
Cleveland added a meaningless 10-yard scoring pass from Watson to Jordan Akins making the final score 34-13 sending the home crowd home happy.
Washington led in Total Yards with 434 to 212 for Cleveland. The also won the ground game 215 yards to 104 for the Browns. They had 19 first downs to 12 for the Browns.
Cleveland was led in passing by Watson who went 15 for 28 for 125 yards and one touchdown. Their leading rusher was Jerome Ford who finished with 47 yards on nine carries. Amari Cooper led the receivers with four catches for 60 yards in a losing effort for the (1-4) Browns.
